DEFIANCE" TO PREMIERE MONDAY, APRIL 15 @ 9 PM ON SYFYRevolutionary Transmedia Event Marks First-Ever Convergence of Television and Online Gaming

NEW YORK - January 7, 2012 - Syfy's highly-anticipated Defiance will have its series premiere Monday, April 15 @ 9pm with a two-hour episode (culminating in a total of 12 episodes/13 hours). Defiance, an unprecedented approach to storytelling, will unite scripted television and online gaming for the very first time. Both the series and the game feature an interconnected world and storylines that will launch in early April with the release of the game and continue seamlessly with the series premiere on the 15th.

Defiance stars Grant Bowler (Nolan), Julie Benz (Amanda Rosewater), Stephanie Leonidas (Irisa), Tony Curran (Datak Tarr), Jaime Murray (Stahma Tarr), Graham Greene (Rafe McCawley) and Mia Kirshner (Kenya).

About Defiance

Set in the near future, Defiance introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden - and tumultuous - arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully. Each week, viewers will follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, MO, while in the game, players will adventure in the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.

The series, produced by Universal Cable Productions, is executive produced by Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica; Hellcats) & Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica). Kevin Murphy serves as showrunner. Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest) directed the pilot; Michael Nankin will serve as supervising producer/director on the series. The game was named "Best MMORPG" from GameSpy at the recent E3 conference in June 2012 (among other accolades).

I’d say that if this show isn’t successful for SyFy, that’ll be the end of scripted scifi on the channel. (Although I’m sure they’ll continue with the scifi-light series such as “Haven” and “Warehouse 13″.)

  • Meanie

Syfy channel pisses me off. Maybe they should invest in shows like TWD, Once Upon A Time, Falling Skies etc. I’m not saying copy those shows but those type of shows would fit perfectly with SyFy niche & programming but maybe all I can do is wish they invest in true genre Syfy programming-___-

I am really excited for this show. I will definitely watch it. I hope it does well.

I think it might do well, but I admit I’m still so pissed off at Syfy for multiple decisions they’ve made over the last few years I won’t be sorry if it fails.

  • DeeAgeaux

There is not much competion for Defiance right now.

    Falling Skies?

There was a time when there were shows on tv like multiple Star Treks,Star Gates,Babylon 5,Far Scape, and others overlapping.

And no, The Neighbors don’t count.

Any news on whether Alphas has been renewed or cancelled?

  • DeeAgeaux

SyFy has delayed yet again on giving answer to Alphas.

Answer now to come “sometime in January.”

I would say the probability is 90% chance it gets cancelled.

I think they are look at several Canadian/British shows they can buy American rights to cheap to replace Alphas.

Looking forward to this hugely. Great cast.

Not really interested in the convergence of scripted TV and online gaming. Maybe it will do well though but meh. I too don’t understand why other cable channels are managing to come up with much more interested scifi, fantasy, horror programming than Syfy. It’s sort of sad. I mean I thought the whole reason to change the name from Scifi to Syfy was so they could branch out and not be buttonholed to niche programming and yet nothing they do has any ‘bite’ or seems to take any risks. Meanwhile AMC does TWD or FX American Horror Story or TNT Falling Skies, BBCA ramping up Dr. Who etc. while Syfy does, well scifi/fantasy/horror lite. They have the cash even though last year they didn’t do quite as well as the year before.

Forget “The Game” Syfy, just do a decent TV show.

syfy has ruined the channel canceling top rated shows stargate atlantis, eureka, farscape and alphas. They let dr who go. The shows they have on now are horrible. Wwe please ghost at everyturn now in a mine really. I dont watch anymore. The only thing on is haven and warehouse 13. If u watch the new shows and they have good rating theyll cancel after 3 yrs. So i wont invest my time. I forgot sanctuary gone and missed.
