It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

The bear had already begun his holiday siesta when the accelerated Sunday burn off of Don't Trust The B---- in Apt. 23 and Happy Endings'  was announced in late December. While Don't Trust The B---- In Apt. 23 was already certain to be canceled, I figured that another 'Til Death style Sony sitcom miracle might save Happy Endings on ABC. But once the burnoff was announced that hope is all but gone. A Sony sitcom miracle is still possible, but it's a real longshot on ABC. On a cable network? Your guess is as good as mine. Desperate fans should start their futile "Save Our Show" campaigns now!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The only show i ever watch and will only watch on ABC is Malibu Country.

Supposedly ABC head Paul Lee was very emphatic about supporting Happy Endings at the TCAs.

I know, network head bullsh*t is to be taken with a pinch of salt, but given the S1 renewal and that it was given the post-MF timeslot last season, it makes sense that the show has a lot of internal support at the network and I’ve read multiple reports that it goes beyond the usual “We love every show” crap that every network usually spouts (yeah, sure, Greenblatt, you “love” Community).

I still think the double-pumping is as much because ABC is short of timeslots and to give the show exposure as it is a “burn-off”.

Shield on Sundays is a terrible idea…I do like castle being paired with it though. Maybe they could be the new Tuesday block.Sunday should stay as the female action\fantasy night. Once and Revenge work together Shield would ruin the dynamic.

    The Neighbors – 0.81
    Nashville – 0.84
    Castle – 0.88
    Scandal – 0.93
    Suburgatory – 0.94
    The Middle – 0.97
    Revenge – 1.48
    Once Upon A Time – 1.55
    Grey’s Anatomy – 1.82
    Modern Family – 2.10

Please ABC renew ‘Castle’ and keep it on Monday nights at 10 PM. Don’t move it to Sunday nights opposite NBC’s Football where it’s sure to fail. No series can do well opposite prime time Football.

  • Troy

Replace the neighbors with last man standing on Wednesday to make an all star lineup

  • Mico

Happy Endings is either sent to Fridays or cancelled with the B.

Sad because Happy Endings is the best written comedy on TV airing right now. I can’t figure out why the ratings dropped so much this season. There are many excuses such as the fact that it aired head to head with the similar New Girl. Regardless, people stopped tuning in. It’s a real shame because it only got better. The cast has great chemistry. I will enjoy the episodes while I can and buy the DVDs when they come out. That is all a fan can do.

I agree with an earlier post that something seriously changed this season with Happy Endings. For the first two seasons, I LOVED it, laughed out loud every episode, and raved about it to all my friends. All of the actors were perfect for their characters, and it was really well written.

This season I almost can’t stand it…as an earlier post said, it’s become way too over the top, pretty much every episode this season has been awful. Seems like a completely new writing team/style. I’m very close to taking it off my TIVO Season Pass completely…when it used to be my favourite. That may be why the ratings have dropped significantly this season, I expect I’m not alone in this view.

HE moving to Friday nights! Hopefully it will get good enough ratings to be renewed….if now maybe TBS will pick it up!
