It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

The ratings for CBS' Vegas have said "likely to be canceled" for quite some time. To make it into next season it'll take a New Year's ratings miracle. It hasn't aired a new episode yet in 2013 (but will tonight). Fans should perform whatever witchcraft they think might influence the numbers.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

What CBS must do now to make POI even bigger hit and at least drama beast is heavy and properly advertising during super bowl and grammys. And before that of course. In that period we will have 4 POI episodes in a row – 31(after best drama episode), 7(after super bowl week), 14(after Grammys week), 21(Jonathan Nolan debut as director and Sarah Shahi series debut). If they can build solid and even stronger fanbase will be great. POI was insane stable 2.9 all fall episodes. If they can make 3.5 new 2.9 will be perfect. Sarah Shahi role sound like future POI spin-off so CBS have a lot in stake here.(more money and one more drama hit) POI is hit and fresh much better chance for successful spin-off than one more ncis.

“Relevance” deserve TBBT lead-in. Its major episode with Nolan and Shahi debuts. Not many Nolan level (oscar winners) on tv these days.

I want to say about the mentalist , he was renews last year for 2 season.

  • Cj morton

    The mentalist better be renewed….

  • chris

I don’t under stand way Blue Bloods makes it when it one of the lowest rated show on that network over that last two yeas?

  • Montecore

Why cancel a good show? I along with others like Vegas and I make sure it is recorded every week on my DVR.

CBS has to realize their best shows regardless of demographics…quit placing so much emphasis on 18-44, they’re more likely out drinking than watching TV and if they have kids they’re playing videos until the kids go to bed…the most LOYAL viewers with the most money are 45+…wake up networks!

P.S.-Person of Interest, Blue Bloods, Hawaii 5-0 and NCIS shows are the most entertaining…The Good Wife and The Mentalist are also very good!

  • michres

Hey networks, from what we are being told, most of the people in the 18-30 demo can’t find jobs and are moving back in with those in the 45 and up demo. They don’t have any money to spend. Look at your total ratings not just kids living in their parent’s basement.

If Vegas is doing so badly in ratings, then I don’t understand why CBS keeps calling it a “hit show” during commercials for it? Are they just flat out lying?

  • jim meehan

Vegas should not be canceled. It’s a good show and there’s plenty of material for future episodes / seasons.

P.S. I’m delighted that Unforgettable is ‘uncanceled. Should never have been canceled in the first place.

Cancelling Vegas??? Really? You’ve just got to be kidding. It is one of the best shows in a long time! Consistently! And from the other reviews it sounds like many others feel the same! Who in the world makes such dumb decisions?

    @Patsy,

Cancelling Vegas??? Really? You’ve just got to be kidding. It is one of the best shows in a long time! Consistently! And from the other reviews it sounds like many others feel the same! Who in the world makes such dumb decisions?

People who want to make money and realize that Vegas is one of the lowest rated shows on CBS and has no prospects for syndication.

Vegas is probably the best show CBS has, why cancel it. I actually look forward to watching it, but most of the shows I like get cancelled for some cheap piece of crap or reality show which is the worst. I don’t like the direction CBS is going putting more mindless shows on TV and taking off shows that have plot lines that are interesting to follow from week to week. Apparently most people that watch TV must be mindless idiots and CBS has an affection for them. CBS has been my favorite channel to watch but they have been taking good shows off recently. I guess it’s time to change the channel.

“Vegas” is cancelled but we keep “2 Broke Girls..? Unbelievable..! Other than NCIS, it was undoubtedly the 2nd. best show on TV on Tuesday night, or any other night for that matter. Get real people. TV is bad enough as it is and then they take a reallly good show off. Whoever is making these decisions should be fired..!!!

  • durango

too bad CBS doesn’t move some of their programs to Saturday night instead of cancelling them….there is absolutely nothing worth watching on Saturday night….

  • Anita

Vegas is being replaced by yet another Cop Show. Let’s get real, Vegas is interesting, well acted and since I am of that generation, really appreciated. It is creative, smart and Dennis Quad and Michael Chiklis are both fine and well honed actors along with their supporting actors. Old Vegas is a part of our history and not just gratutitous violence. Old Vegas was safter and a lot classier than today’s Vegas of over the top Hotels and fake glamour.

Those in charge need to take a second look.
