It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Nothing has changed in the New Year yet between the three of the CW shows in the "mediocre middle" (90210, Hart Of Dixie, Beauty & The Beast) and at least one of them is certain to be canceled.

Will we be able to predict which one it will be? Certainly late season ratings dives might make the difference (hello, The Secret Circle!). But barring one of those, we may be flipping a three sided coin.

The renewal of either CW spring drama (Cult, The Carrie Diaries) would almost certainly mean more cancellations among those three.

How can Nikita with the lowest ratings on the network be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Jordan
    It’s rather sad that you think juvenile mockery makes you look anything but stupid. Unfortunately, you are still stuck on the idea that gender has anything to do with maturity, let alone the legitimacy of TV awards. If you truly believe that female fans are crazier and less mature than male fans, I invite you to check out a site called “4chan,” sometime.

    And if we’re getting into people ignoring points (Did it not occur to you that I might have been posting my comment shortly after Shaz’s and simply didn’t see it?), why did you fixate so hard on the part of Shaz’s comment about the small number of teenage female fans and utterly miss the first part that noted these awards are all about publicity?

    You can scream and whine and kick your feet all you want, but the CW and the founders still won’t care that you hate their voting system. They are hardly ignorant of what goes on. They *want* fans to engage in that kind of behavior. Complaining about the legitimacy of the PCAs isn’t much different from complaining about the legitimacy of Nielsen ratings. Networks will still brag that their shows won this or that category and use those awards as opportunities for new ad campaigns. Because TV is about advertising. It’s not a popularity contest. It’s certainly not a measure of quality in art. And it never has been.

    @Carrie D
    Where do you think you are, the ‘hood? You think I want to “take you on” and yet, you’re telling other people to grow up? Really?

    I couldn’t care less about Beauty and the Beast. Tried it, didn’t like it, watch other stuff now. Doesn’t mean I am wasting any of my precious time on this planet wishing it dead. It doesn’t affect the survival of any show I like and doesn’t impinge on my life in any way. So, sure, I’m happy to say good for it that it won an award and to wish it well. What is mystifying to me is why you waste so much vitriol on it if you genuinely don’t care about it. You keep calling other people fanatics and whackjobs, but your own behavior is hardly rational.

    I think most CW shows are bad crack these days, but if we’re going to pick from this bunch of mediocre 3 to save, I think Hart of Dixie has the best chance to be saved, then 90210, and lastly B&B.

    Some of the comments in here are hilarious, btw.

    @thesnowleopard For someone who says they don’t like Beauty & the Beast, you sure come around here a lot to talk about and support it at times. (I’ve seen your name posting in this thread several times.) Just saying. And to be fair, I just read Jordan’s comment. It’s Tom you should be picking on. He made the misogynistic, gender-esque comment, not JOrdan. If you’re going to put up a fight then fight fairly. And read comments+arguments more closely if you’re going to nitpick ‘em! Otherwise you lose in your debate.

    AHAHAHA, @Carrie D. You sound rude but you know what? You’re VERY funny at the same time, LOL. =D The people who come back here and try to respond are only making you win the edge. Sorry peeps but that’s the truth.

  • nola

    4 reasons not to watch the B&B:1)read a good book 2) going out with friends 3)take romantic stroll with a handsome4) to go out to eat a pizza!

  • Kaio

    Renew HoD, Arrow, TVD and Supernatural.

    And bring back 7th Heaven

  • Restless

    Seriously, what is with all the juvenile hate on this site. I’m quite certain no opinion posted here makes any bit of difference in what shows are renewed or canceled, nor will any attack mounted against the poster hold any sway. There’s absolutely zero reason to insult other posters.

    “All this pitting of sex against sex, of quality against quality; all this claiming of superiority and imputing of inferiority, belong to the private-school stage of human existence where there are ‘sides,’ and it is necessary for one side to beat another side, and of the utmost importance to walk up to a platform and receive from the hands of the Headmaster himself a highly ornamental pot. As people mature they cease to believe in sides or in Headmasters or in highly ornamental pots.”

    Or so you would think. If only these boards were not overflowing with those who enjoy fighting like children, taunting and pulling each other’s hair and reveling in their own selfishness.

    @martinesque
    If Tom had said “Most ‘people’ have more important things to occupy their time. I bet a bunch of votes came from blacks who can’t get jobs” and Jordan had said “True. VERY true. I think Tom has a point. The same fans who watch this show are probably the ones who voted for it.” Could you really blame someone for assuming them both to be racist?

    Simply put, it came across as misogynistic to me as well. If it wasn’t his intent to be a misogynist, a clarification of his questionably worded post or even, heaven forbid, a mutual apology for the misunderstanding might have kept this from escalating into more petty attacks.

  • Mico

    Beauty and The Beast won best new drama at Peoples Choice if that affects anything. Still, I thought it was an awful show.

  • martinesque

    @Restless:
    Once again, in all fairness, I read Jordan’s other comments – not just the original one – and he/she apparently did clarify that the agreement with Tom was over this:

    @Jordan’s words: “I only agreed with Tom on that small point that he made about a small bunch of fans banding together just to win some meaningless award. Whether they’re female and/or teens, who knows and who cares? But eh, it’s pointless to explain…”

    So yup, there it is. Personally, I don’t mind debates – not even if they seem useless like the ones that often happen here or on most fannish sites – but the point to me is, one needs to read carefully and be fair if you’re going to engage in said debates. On that note, my opinion is that @thesnowleopard glossed over the above clarification and as a result, her debate with @Jordan seems somewhat pointless because it escalated from something she misunderstood. If she’s going to talk about misogyny, then it really should be directed to @Tom. (I assume @thesnowleopard is a woman because misogyny was mentioned, but if that’s not the case, my apologies. That being said, I’m not 100% convinced @Jordan is a man. Could be a woman, too, since I know a lot of ladies named @Jordan, you know?)

    As far as mutual apologies- as in coming from BOTH sides here? Haha, heaven forbid indeed. In general, you don’t often see that happen in these cases. It would be nice but fans RARELY let their emotions slide to the side once things get heated and they get into it. But think about it, @thesnowleopard & @Jordan…olive branches wouldn’t sound so bad, right? ;)

  • Margot Green

    Arrow certainly will not be deleted but honestly actor Stephen Amell has a bad acting looks like a piece of wood is too hard. Clear Beauty and the Beast because they are too poor!

  • Dahne

    @Restless – good to know someone else is shaking their head at the way people are talking to each other here. I took Tom’s comments as misogynistic and stereotypical too.

    Most of the comments here are uncalled for. I am fine with the attacks on ratings and even shows but when you start attacking other posters you just look immature and petty. This especially goes to you @CarrieD. Attacking a teenager calls your own maturity into question.

    By the way, I stopped watching The Secret Circle after Guy Bee’s episode and I only went that far to support him. I only watched the pilot of Beauty and the Beast. I have no vested interest in either show. However I do come here a lot and the pathetic sniping is unfortunate. I long for the return of delusional fans, questionable proof, and ranting about a show’s quality. That was much more fun drama than targeting kids and stereotyping people with misogynistic comments.

  • Carrie D

    Wow, a few people to leave comments for today! Yippee. :)

    @thesnowleopard Now who’s stereotyping?? I’m ‘from the hood’ because I used the phrase “take me on”? Oh wow, you surely have ideas in your head of where people come from. Making more false assumptions/conclusions about people, I see. You need to get out more. “Take me on” is used often, not just in your idea of the, um, ‘hood’. LOL. But now that you mention it, we’re all part of the ‘hood’ in a way — you included. The fandom ‘hood’, that is. Oh yes. ;)

    As for spewing “vitriol”, you say? Your ‘pal’ Carla is fun to play with, what can I say? It was too hard to pass up, and it still is. You know what they say — “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” :D She spoke like one of those obnoxious teen fans, so I decided to speak ‘her language’ and take her to task on it. What can I say, it’s sometimes a guilty pleasure of mine to taunt the future of tomorrow for sounding arrogantly righteous (e.g., teaching others like Bill how ratings work? Wow, LMAO…). Now, if you want to continue defending that kind of Carla-type schtick, that’s nice. Feel free to continue…taking me on. :D

    @Dahne Call my own maturity into question all you want, m’dear. Funny, however, how you chose NOT to lecture others like Carla for adding to the chaotic mess in this thread. (She did, after all, add to the fray by calling out Jordan, too…”U haterz”, OY. I’ll never get over those silly words. At least attempt to talk in normal English, Carla, not ‘text-talk’.) But you want to focus solely on me, while giving her a pass??? How unbelievably biased of you. ~eyeroll~

    And I don’t know why you say you’re longing for the return of delusional fans. Hello? Obviously they’re still around! But on this site, they just act out by being delusional about ratings and their show’s chances for renewal, LOL.

    @martinesque Nice to know you were entertained by my sarcastic sense of humor, LOL. Hey, if they want to keep coming at me — biased folks & silly teens alike — let them come. More fun for me, I guess. ;)

    —–
    Anyway, I’ll say this to add relevance to the thread: I hear they’re thinking of doing a spinoff based on TVD? Well, well…that added factor makes it more scary for shows like Beauty & the Beast, doesn’t it? Yep, I think so. And who knows what else they already have planned for Fall 2013? Doesn’t look promising for the mediocre group, and yes…of all of them, I think the Beast needs the life preserver the most, LOL.

  • AAA

    Well, about top 3: Jensen mentioned in his PCA interview that his baby comes during summer hiatus,” don’t you worry, CW and WB, we’ll be fine”. So SPN is definitely coming back (no surprise here), as well as TVD and Arrow (personally I am dropping Arrow when it returns, I was giving it a try because it is airing before SPN,but I gave up, nothing for me there, one more superhero is already too much). I am checking out Cult for sure. So back to the point: everything will depend on Cult and CD performance, nothing new here. Too early.

  • Edna

    I find it very sad to read all the negative remarks here, I am a grandmother and my favorite show is Beauty and the Beast, I have loved any show with a fantasy theme since I was a child. So much for remarks about only silly teenagers liking it. I hope it doesn’t get cancelled as it is getting better and better. Anyone who hasn’t seen it in a while should give it another chance. It is unfortunate it started out in such a terrible timeslot, I am surprised it did as well as it did. 8pm is a much better time for new shows. CW did right by Arrow, and is really promoting Carrie Diaries, so much more than they did for any of the other new shows. Just have to wait and see I guess!

  • domdh95

    @Omabin
    Bless you!

  • Billy martins

  • Fan

    @ Billy Martin

    How to say that ? There is NO CHANCE The CW will premiere two new Shows on Friday. Plus Nikita will be Renewed for Syndication and the Show will stay on Friday at 8. I agree with you The Vampire Diaries should move to Wednesday at 8 and Arrow to Thursday BUT Supernatural will stay on Wednesday at 9.
    For me, Hart of Dixie is the best candidate to move to Friday. I think ANTM and Beauty and the Beast will be canceled. 90210 will Renewed for the final 13 episodes with maybe Cult to replace it in February 2014. The other will be Renewed for full season (22-24 episodes).

  • SmG

    Today, Pedowitz said 90210 will get a proper send off like OTH and GG. I think it is safe to say that it will be renewed for at least a short season.

  • Freyja

    Everyone relax and chill out, it’s okay to get passionate about TV,but we shouldn’t be attacking or making assumptions about posters. Not everyone has to like the same shows.

    We already know SPN is a lock for renewal, Arrow will probably get a pick up TVD also a lock for renewal.

    90210 HOD B&TB and Nikita are toss ups.

    I suspect it all depends on how Carrie Diaries and the Cult work out.

  • AAA

    I wouldn’t say SPN is a lock for renewal. “The CW plans to make a final decision about Season 9 based on the show’s ratings when it returns from winter hiatus on January 16″ as per latest and greatest from Pedowitz dude. So if ratings won’t collapse after hiatus then it will be most likely a lock. And again – nothing is certain in this industry until it’s officially announced.

  • Brandy

    Pedowitz on 90210:No desicion yet, but it will get a proper sendoff ala oth/GG
    Pedowitz on HoD:”its a fun show,it stands out on a tough night and we are pleased where its going creativley”
    Pedowitz on Beauty “We believe it has a long life,are pleased with where its going creativley believe in the love story between Vincent & Catherine,we believe it has more growth potetntial than SC,but its on par with SC ratings wise”
    Pedowitz on Nikita”:its on par with expecations since moving back to 8″.

  • JulieDawn

    OK, re BATB:
    1) I’m somewhat biased because I absolutely adore the show. But….
    2) I’m also intelligent enough to understand that an intense fan following or a PCA award does not a renewal make on it’s own, it obviously will come down to financials in the end, whether that be simply the ratings or a combination of that with overseas sales, cost of making the series etc.

    However – at the CW TCA panel today Pedowitz did say several very positive things about BATB, including “We’re pleased with where it’s going creatively. We believe the show has a long run in front of it.” Of course, yes he’s going to keep talking up the show on the back of the PCA publicity, but his statements have even been more positive than many of us BATB fans expected.

    In addition – re the PCA award…the network shut down production for a day and sent Jay Ryan and Kristin Kreuk on a private plane from Toronto to LA and back for the awards show. An extremely last minute decision made literally late the night before.

    Sure, I may be eating crow come decision-time, but you don’t incur the very very very high costs of renting a private plane for transcontinental trips in addition to the probably even more expensive shut down of production, for a show the network has given up on. At least not yet.
