Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 6, 2013):

It's a New Year and the cancellation bear is back!

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

There hasn't been a new episode of Ben & Kate aired in 2013 yet (the first airs tonight), but, barring a miracle, its fate was sealed long ago. Only a New Year's ratings recovery the likes of which we've never seen can save it.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Just to let you know that the news has just broken that Bones has been renewed for a 9th Season.

  • Ryan Schwartz

Ben and Kate and Mindy will both get axed. FOX will likely revert back to the New Girl/Raising Hope combo Tuesdays at 9, put a developed show Tuesdays at 8 such as Glee, and spend their time developing potential hit dramas for the post-BONES FOX that’s coming in a year or two. Dramas need to be their priority next season. Hoping for the network’s sake that FOLLOWING does well. I’m assuming TOUCH does poor, and Fridays are dead.

“Just to let you know that the news has just broken that Bones has been renewed for a 9th Season.”

    Now updated!

  • Sarah

Yay about Bones! :) Now I can breathe a small sigh of relief. I want the ratings to be good the rest of the season so it doesn’t get stuck on Fridays next season.

  • Joy

Yeah its ashame bc Ben & Kate is actually a pretty cute show. Just give Maggie Elizabeth Jones her own Disney show!

  • Red Jane

I think Fox has sometimes given an opportunity to a ratings challenged show if the quality is there… Fringe is the obvious example… So on that basis I hope they’ll give a chance to Mindy which as a comedy is pretty good and targets a valuable young female demographic…

  • Pepper

Everything that doesn’t have five green faces or a ‘renewed’ next to it is getting the boot.

  • CenterGravity

Cancel Cleveland Show, Mindy Project, and Ben/Kate. Go Bones!

  • Jamie

Ben and Kate is such a sweet show,:( If its going to be canceled, then I’ll enjoy it while it lasts. Hopefully they at least let all the episodes air.

congrats to bones on getting renewed.

  • Dan

Ben & Kate has 9 more episodes airing
    January 8, 15, 22
    February 5, 12, 19
and March 5, 12, 19, 26 (One day in the month will be a repeat)

All 19 eps will air and likely on April 2, The Goodwin Games will replace it (airing all of its episodes (April 2-May 14)

Also The Cleveland Show has 23 episodes total for this season (88 eps total over 4 seasons) The rest are scheduled through May, which means barring a 13 episode fifth season miracle, the show is more likely to be cancelled by the end of the month.

I believe no matter how garbage the ratings, The Mindy Project will still be renewed along with Raising Hope and New Girl. This means 1 new comedy will premiere for FOX Tuesdays next fall.

Too early to tell for The Following and The Goodwin Games, but If I were to bet money I’d say FOX would try to do anything to salvage The Following (It couldn’t possibly do worse than The Mob Doctor) while The Goodwin Games is probably DOA.

“Raising Hope” is such a revelation/revolution (whichever applies) that it so deserves all that green!

  • jimbo

Why is Ben n Kate likely to be cancelled while Mindy is on the bubble? Mindy project is awful, very predictable.
I like to know more about Kate’s life getting better with a right man and wanna see Ben finally fall in love with the British woman!!

  • Ricky

Wow, ROFL @Mob Doctor. Has any show’s Index number ever been that low?

We want your votes! The Elimination Game:

  • Wright

Sad to see Mob Doctor go. Good for Bones!!!

  • dexterfan

this is such a shame, i truly like this show and it deserves to be watched. and lucy punch is amazingly great! but let’s be honest.. it doesn’t have the best timeslot out there and while raising hope gets decent ratings, ‘decent’ doesn’t qualify for a fit lead-in.

  • Dan

@Jimbo – Both shows have terrible numbers but Ben & Kates are worse (Probably because Mindy Project has a better lead in, but as with moth 8:30 comedies in a two hour comedy block Ben & Kate Loses viewers from Raising Hope and then rises when New Girl comes on. Mindy got 24 eps and B&K got 19, since Mindy got the higher number, FOX wants that one around for longer. Ben & Kate seems 1 and done, while Mindy will likely get another season as what may be a “Save face renewal” and FOX wants to rebuild their block for next season so its better to have 3 returning comedies than 2.

  • Joe

I really doubt FOX cancels both Mindy and Ben and Kate and I still don’t see them reverting back to Glee/comedy Tuesdays. That’d be admitting failure, first of all – and would Glee help the night out that much? It’s struggling to crack a 2.2 lately, and throwing it against The Voice would probably send it to sub-2.0 levels.

  • Joseph

The Cancellation Bear is waiting to devour “Ben & Kate”.

    He’s licking his chops!

  • Pinkle

Ben and Kate should have been a 13 and done show, with The Goodwin Games replacing it for the rest of the season with a 13-episode run that’s almost consecutive (maybe 1 or 2 repeats/off weeks).

FOX really wants this two-hour comedy block to work SO bad, but they made the mistake of keeping Ben and Kate around when they really didn’t have to.

The only way I see Ben and Kate getting renewed is if Raising Hope get shipped off to Fridays 8PM next season. They will need a show to fill 8:30-9PM. If this happens, Mindy should get renewed, and FOX will need to debut 2 comedies Tuesday 8PM.

    January 8, 15, 22
    February 5, 12, 19
and March 5, 12, 19, 26 (One day in the month will be a repeat)

Technically, it’s zero repeats and two preemptions (SOTU and Idol). ;)

I agree with everything you said though, except that I don’t think The Mindy Project is a certain renewal. There’s a chance that Goodwin Games hits, or that they have a strong pilot season (leading to a cutback in comedies for an extra drama or to three freshamn comedies they have confidence in).
