It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

It was only one night, and there was no other original broadcast competition (save Mobbed), but the 2013 return of Whitney and Guys With Kids was not as dreadfully rated as their Fall episodes were. Is that a sign of things to come, or just a bit of false hope for desperate fans? Impossible to know at this point, and for that reason I'm keeping their predictions at "likely to be canceled" for at least another week.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Adam

Single cam sitcoms are less likely to succeed than Multi cam comedies.

Yeah. Modern Family, The Middle, New Girl, Suburgatory, Raising Hope, and Go On should’ve all been condemned from the start! *rollseyes*

  • y henderson

I hate liking any show on NBC the network really doesn’t give some shows a chance to grow. Remember Harry’s Law and now Up All Night. But they kept Whitney and Guys with Kids, Go On????????????

  • Ernie

I think Whitney will be gone while Guys with kids and Up All night(turn to multi cam) would be ordered another season to see if NBC can develop Family Sitcom.
I think 9:00 Tuesday would be good for the family shows, not Go On, TNN.

  • Brian

i love Whitney!Chris D’elia/Whitney Cummings are hilarious, and so great tgether on screen! How is everybody missing this? Are you watching the same show?Guys with kids is also great!Im definately watching, and i hope they both have nice long runs. The shows keep getting better and better. If they do get cancelled,it would just be a shame.Seems like all the shows i like always get cancelled.hooray for season 63 of DWTS…Or another rigged season of idol,or any of the music competition shows.Or one of the 10 overly-long in the tooth Law and Order/CSI crap.oh well, guess everybody likes to be bored when they watch t.v….

  • NBC is awesome

    Thursdays for Fall:

    8 Go On
    830 Parks…
    9MJF comedy
    930New comedy/up all night/whitney/guys with kids
    10 LAO:SVU

  • Oliver

Previous episode ratings of NBC sitcoms:

    The Office – 2.2
    1600 Penn – 1.6 (timeslot premiere)
    30 Rock – 1.5
    Go On – 1.5
    Parks and Recreation – 1.5
    Whitney – 1.4
    Guys With Kids – 1.3
    The New Normal – 1.3

Incredibly hard to pick between them.

  • Mico

I’d go with Parks, Go On, and GWK. (maybe if 1600 Penn stables at 1.6)

  • Mico

Oh and where is the bear pic

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Oh and where is the bear pic”

The bear roams around this season.

This week, he’s in the ABC post.

  • Mico

Hey that’s cool! I’ll take note.

  • Marie

GWK is the only one of my new favourite shows that I’ve told my girlfriends their husbands would enjoy too, so there’s a huge potential fan base…if people would only discover it. This show has been so consistently funny every episode (clever humour, not cheap/predictable sitcom humour), if NBC could expand on the promos, I think most first time viewers would become fans. It would be a perfect family comedy for a Thursday must-see TV lineup.

I can’t believe it’s “likely to be cancelled” by NBC. That’s really short-term thinking over long-term gain. Come on NBC, spread the word and give it a chance. I’d put money on it working out.

  • Cindy

Whitney is great. Great chemistry between the characters. Please save it!

  • Brendan

Whitney has to stay, Whitney Cummings is like one of the most funniest women of all time. I watched the first season and luved it and so far I luv her 2nd season. So keep Whitney, I mean Are You There, Chelsea got cancled so don’t do it to Whitney.

  • The Ricker

The only reason Guys with kids even became a show was because of Fallon(NBC thought it would catch on because of his now golden boy status,WRONG,lol.)The reason it’s still on is because both NBC and Fallon are looking for an exit strategy to save face,I tried watching it but it’s just pure DRECK!The same goes for Whitney, plain old CRAP,bad writing and actors will do that to a show…

  • glena miller

I hope Guys with Kids doesn’t get cancelled I enjoy this show and it just seems every show I like gets cancelled. First Emilly Owens MD now maybe Guys With Kids. Well I’m so tired of those reality shows. Does that many people really like those shows or is the networks just trying to shove them down our throats? Just asking?
