via press note:

From 8-9pm, ABC’s repeat comedies (Modern Family/The Middle) beat Fox’s original comedies (Raising Hope/Ben & Kate) by 2.2 million viewers and by 14% in Adults 18-49. In addition at 8pm, the encore Modern Family outdelivered the second season premiere of NBC’s Off Their Rockers with viewers and young adults.

At 9pm, ABC’s Happy Endings was up over its last original telecast in the half-hour three weeks ago by 8% in Adults 18-49 and posted its most-competitive finish yet with NBC’s Go On (pacing within 1-tenth of a rating point and tied in audience share). Happy Endings defeated Go On in Adults 18-34 and Men 18-34. The ABC comedy matched its top Adult 18-49 number since its season premiere on October 23, 2012.

At 9:30pm, Don’t Trust The B---- in Apt 23 drew its biggest audience in 10 weeks (since 10/30/12) and retained 100% of its last original in the half-hour among Adults 18-49.

During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s Private Practice earned its largest audience since December 4, 2012.

This press release pretty much says we like Happy Endings. Dont trust the B is dead.

I wondered how ABC was going to spin this, and now I know.

If a show airs in a terrible slot and achieves fourth place and garbage numbers but then two days later airs in a slightly less terrible slot but still has garbage numbers and fourth place but is up. Its a success for ABC.

yet could not even hold all of its repeat lead-in. GO The Middle. :D

  • Dan

And if you achieve a 0.9 and retain 100% of your audience, does it make your show a hit? On an ABC press release, yes it does.

@Bill – These shows were positively mentioned and touted in this press release, they both are definitely getting renewed. ;)

  • Dan

I do praise the ABC PR department, they can probably make anything sound good.

Instead of shows getting pulled from the schedule, they are celebrated for how slightly better they did against competition. At least by March this 3 way comedy train wreck will be gone.

  • RJ

ABC repeat comedies may have beat the FOX original comedies at 8pm. But ABC’s new comedies lost to FOX and FOX original comedies at 9pm.

  • Dan

    @RJ – Shhhh……ABC doesn’t want anyone to know that!!!

  • landon

    HAPPY ENDINGS! There is hope!

  • Joe Robby

@RJ, that is true, but HE is showing upward momentum (admittedly small) while Fox and NBC are flat and under, respectively.

  • Joe Robby

…and ABCs comedies debuted a month later than NBC and Fox. That is worth noting as HE is earlier in its season.

  • Neil

An Asteroid could be heading towards Earth on a collision course and ABCs’ PR department would spin it as good news!

  • Sinbad

Brilliant show! Always funny… and none of the usual sit-com cliches!

  • Dan

At this point Happy Endings getting renewed doesn’t depend on the ratings (Its against both NBC and FOX’s highest rated comedies and the numbers are garbage no matter how you spin it). It depends on another networks (TBS) willingness to pick it up or ABC’s willingness to give it 2 more seasons if Sony cuts the license fee, like Til Death.

  • Rebecca

HE was funnier last night than on Sunday, IMO. It’s better when the characters don’t act too over the top, and last night was one of their better episodes.

I just wanted to give my opinion of “happy endings”
Last season I thought this was one of favorite comedies, funny, creative and didn’t use a stereotypical gay guy.
But this season ….it’s rediculously stupid. One episode after another I keep hoping it gets back on track but I fear it’s too late. It’s like a group friends get together to be idiots.
