In the preliminary metered market ratings in the markets with local people meters (which include only the 25 largest markets), and are often subject to adjustment in the final ratings, Jimmy Kimmel Live topped the competition in its first night at 11:35 among adults 18-49 with a 1.0 rating to Leno's 0.8 rating and Letterman's 0.6 rating. Our polled commenters were mostly way too pessimistic or way too optimistic.

While we typically do not see final late night ratings on a daily basis (we'l see the week's final ratings next Thursday) the Kimmel move may cause ABC to put out the final ratings in a press release, which we will post. Stay tuned.

via NBC press note:

In Late-Night Metered Markets Tuesday night:

* In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The
Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 2.4/6; CBS's "Late Show with David

* In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results

    OUCH.

WHERE ARE ALL THE KIMMEL HATERS?

ABC won both hours which is great for them!

  • BrieK

About what I expected. I believe JKL will eventually settle between Leno and Letterman. The move hurts Letterman more than Leno.

  • J.G.

Are the Nightline numbers way down or on par from when it was on at 11:35?

  • joel

Leno is getting forced out by Jimmy Fallon, whom NBC will move up to 11:35pm to compete with Kimmel.

  • Honey Badger

Jimmy Kimmel Live final numbers will be adjusted down. I read where some major markets did not move the show up to the new time slot. In fact one major market expanded there local news from a half hour to an hour, and left Jimmy Kimmel Live at its origanl time.
I read this on a internet site.

  • BrieK

Leno’s contract just got extended, though. How is he getting “forced out”?

  • Diana Santiago

Kimmel winning on his first day was expected… Jay Leno being crushed at #3… ouch.

  • Pundit

Disney ain’t gonna like this. Kimmel’s numbers show a decided lack of interest by Leno and Letterman fans in his product. He barely won the night, which explains why the numbers are from NBC.

I think Conan did better his first night on TBS. Whatever happened to Conan? He still on the air?

And let’s not get too excited, this Jimmy Kimmel Live move was highly advertised, and ratings usually have a big drop in this type of situation.

I still hold to my earlier post:

Who is the best in late night television?
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert rule and are the best
    Jay Leno
    Jimmy Fallon
    Carson Daly
    David Letterman
    Craig Ferguson
    Conan O’Brien
    Jimmy Kimmel

Jimmy Kimmel is not brining anything new. Jimmy Kimmel show will debut with the television cure-all of a “shiny new set.” Other than that, we can expect same old, same old, which is why Kimmel’s first guest will be Jennifer Aniston, fresh from the A-list of has-beens.”

Entertainment rates have fallen with viewers, and viewers have left CBS, NBC and ABC for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, for cable, for Hulu and YouTube
Are all the late night shows slowly dying?
NBC Tonight Show with Jay Leno ; CBS “Late Show with David Letterman,” ABC combo of “Nightline,” ; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live”
NBC “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” CBS’s “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson”
NBC “Last Call with Carson Daly”

Do The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report on the Comedy Central channel on cable have more viewers when one takes into account the number of people who watch online?
“our developing tastes and viewing habits. We’re the generation of point and click. We record our shows, or watch them online. We fast forward through commercials or mute them on a separate tab on our laptops. There is no late-night for us. We’re the 24-hour, seven-days-a-week viewing crowd. We don’t care what time a show is on, or for how long. We just want to him to be entertained.”

Leno was second with 0.8 in 18-49.

  • Doug

@ Diana – Leno was #2 in the demo, and all 3 safely “crushed” Conan in the 18-49 demo.

  • Pundit

As for Jimmy Fallon pushing out Leno, Fallon is not even Kimmel let alone Conan, and we saw what happened when Conan pushed Leno out: Zucker wound up at CNN

  • Gary Middleton

BrieK, I think that contract extension story was not substiantiated. I believe the overwhelming odds are Leno is done in 2014.

But finishing third for one night is not a big deal. It’s one night out of 200.

  • Justin

Q: How many shows have great premiers but then drop off horribly?
    A: Almost all of them.

Take that for what you will.

  • mike

I THOUGHT KIMMEL WAS FANTASTIC AT 11;35 LENO WAS DUMB LETERMAN WAS OK AND CONAN DYING OUT I TAKED CONAN LENO LETTTERMAN THRU DVR SO I WATCH ALL SHOWS SO IM NOW KIMMEL FAN SORRY LENO LETTERMAN CONAN

  • The Cool Max

    Wonderful!! Go Jimmy, beat Leno!!

“ABC won both hours which is great for them!”

    1. ABC still gets to compare Nightline’s 30 min to an hour for the other guys. Apples/Oranges makes for easy PR!
    2. Even with that crutch, Nightline only tied Late Night among adults 18-49.

As noted, the Local People Meter ratings include just 25 of the largest markets. They are *often* adjusted in the final ratings, which as noted, we typically receive on a weekly basis the following Thursday.

@J.G. Nightline down 40-50% from 11:35. ABC was up overall as best I can tell, so the move looks positive.
    (1.0+1.0+0.5 > 0.8+0.5+0.5)

Obviously last night isn’t an indicator of how things will hold up. I’d wait for the February sweeps to make that judgement.
