Nightline” #1 at 12:35 am in All Target Demos:

Bests “Ferguson” and “Fallon” in Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49

On January 10, 2013, ABC’s “Nightlinehit time period highs in the 12:35 a.m. time-slot across all target demos: Total Viewers (1.950 million), Adults 25-54 (992,000) and Adults 18-49 (751,000), according to Fast National Preliminary Live + Same Day Nielsen data.

Nightlineranked No. 1 versus its CBS and NBC competition in all key target demos (Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49), outdelivering CBS’ “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (1.534 million, 669,000, and 510,000 respectively) and NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (1.472 million, 651,000 and 572,000, respectively).  In fact, in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49, “Nightline” posted its largest margins of victory yet over both CBS’ “Late Late Show (323,000 and 241,000, respectively) and NBC’s “Late Night” (341,000 and 179,000).

“Nightline” surged on ABC’s performance on the same night last year (1/12/12) by 28% in Total Viewers (1.950 million vs. 1.519 million), by 31% in Adults 25-54 (992,000 vs. 757,000) and by 41% in Adults 18-49 (751,000 vs. 533,000).

“Nightline” reported on the trial of a petite 32-year-old charged with stabbing, shooting, and slashing her one-time boyfriend; had an exclusive interview with the family of Junior Seau, the NFL superstar and family man whose suicide shocked the nation; and reported on those “snubbed” in the just-announced Oscar nominations.

Great for Nightline. This entire move to put Kimmel first and NIghtline second is working out great so far. Nightline simply brought its audience with it and others may drop it to DVR for later viewing. Plus Kimmel may benefit from those accustomed to watching ABC at his new hour. Someone at ABC deserves a pay raise for this superb, bold move.

@USAAmerica1st – This looks good on paper but they are not reporting the half hour they actually do compete with those two.

I have to disagree with USAmerica1st.

This initial surge won’t last, and ratings for both Jimmy Kimmel and “Nightline” will nosedive.

In fact, I expect that by September, “Nightline” will be back at 11:30 P.M. ET/PT, and Jimmy Kimmel (unless he leaves ABC in protest to his show getting pushed back) returns to the 12 Midnight slot.

  • Rollie Dethloff

Personally, I dislike that Nightline moved.

  • David Howell

The very fact that they switched the shows probably gained attention for both. Will be interesting to see where they settle, but the fact Nightline is still hanging in there with a 0.6 in 18-49 at 12:35 is a good sign.

“the fact Nightline is still hanging in there with a 0.6 in 18-49 at 12:35 is a good sign.”

David, this was one night out of 4. Nightline’s average is going to be considerably lower than 0.6.
