If, however, the viewer watches the entire show but skips all the commercials, Nielsen does not give the show any ratings credit.

No. These ratings work just as Doug stated. The C3 ratings only include the commercials and those are the ones used to set ad prices, but the daily ratings include those who skipped commercials

Is BBT getting anywhere close to the ratings that Friends would have reached??? Delighted for the show and all those involved…it really is hilarious to watch!!!

  • TV Addict

All the NBC comedies are around the 1.3-1.6 range. I’m just hoping that Community can at least match that and be renewed.

    Great night for CBS, wow!

The TBBT haters amuse me. They are probably the same people who slammed on shows like Cheers, Seinfeld, Home Improvement and Friends. They just hate to see anything succeed in such a manner. For some reason in their mind, nothing deserves mass popular appeal. They hate just to hate, and it wouldn’t matter if it was Suburgatory or some other sitcom hitting 20 million viewers they would still hate.

    @ Holly and @ Doug

Thanks.. Got confused with C3 ratings.. Just re-read

which restates what both of you said….

    TBBT is unstopable!!
Impressed by the Scandal’s numbers considering the 1st season’s ratings

Dish Network Corp. is developing a feature that would let advertisers see what people are watching in real time, setting the stage for last-minute auctions of ad space.

The company is looking to build on a viewership-tracking service introduced in November on its Hopper set-top boxes. The feature, called “What’s Hot Now,” allows Hopper users to see what other Dish customers are watching and flip to the most popular programs.

By collecting real-time data through set-top boxes, Dish may develop a new way for the industry to sell advertisements, Warren Schlichting, Dish’s senior vice president of media sales and analytics, said in an interview.

Interesting… If Dish actually gets advertisers to buy into this, we could see a revolution on how tv is finance.

grey’s still holding st own despite the horrible lead-in, ABC should really work on that thursday 8pm, POI getting the same ratings with two and a half man as a lead in it pathetic, if grey’a had a decent show at 8 pm it could be in the mid 4s for sure.
and SCANDAL! wow! finally getting the audience it deserves. I guess ABC did a rally bad job with promotion back in S1 and the beginning of S2 based on promotion alone I ignored the show myself. But then I read some enthusiastic review online and I gave it a chance and now… i’m hooked!
My only concern is if it really keeps on growing ABC could move it in another timeslot and use it as a lead in for ohter shows, in that case I’m afraid it’d drown, but i doubt Shonda will let it happen anyway

1600 Penn is hilarious. I think if it stays around a 1.5 most weeks and maybe bottoms out at 1.3 it could be renewed. Josh Gad is a comedy genius, I also think it’s a great role for Jenna Elfman, and I love the sister.

Can someone explain to me the Scandal rise? It was barely getting by and losing to Elementary, but now it’s retaining over 85% of Grey’s ratings?!?

  • PETE5125

@Janice ABC has had 8 PM as a black hole for about 20 years, nothing works, Thur. night in general normally causes them problem, outside of Ugly Betty, and now with Big Bang being huge and American Idle, anything they put their would bomb, unless they where willing to take Modern Family into the slaughter House, they really don’t have anything with enough buzz to work in that slot…I would of stuck w/ Last Resort and gave it more advertisement…it is a slow grower like POI, and I think TV Channels don’t consider, Thanksgiving and Christmas get togethers enough in how to keep a struggling show going…I know at my get together Last Resort was talked about along w/ Nashville of cool new shows….same thing happened w/ POI last year a show my Dad really liked and I started watching.

but back to ABC I’m sure they got Wipeout ready to go

  • David Howell

ABC should just allocate Thursday 8pm to cheap unscripted filler – Wipeout won’t work all season long, but you could have Winter Wipeout through January and February, and either game shows or news magazines the rest of the year. They cannot compete against the two SCs (Sheldon Cooper and Simon Cowell) and shouldn’t even try. Grey’s doesn’t need a lead-in anyway, it’s still getting 3s without one (and skewing far younger than POI – I suspect it beats it handily in 18-34).

I thought Scandal would at least be nudged down to a 2.7, but that’s a staggering result for a show that was launched midseason and barely got renewed ahead of GCB last season.

  • Mayans

People that think TBBT ratings will grow even more the next couple of weeks are forgetting that Idol is about to start again.

OMG I love TBBT, Best Show Ever, love the photoshoot bit!

Nielsen boxes will never be replaced with set-top boxes, sorry. The problem with set-top boxes is that they know when the TV is on and what’s being watched, but they don’t know who is watching. They can’t tell whether there’s no one in the room or 20. They can’t tell if a viewer is 3 years old or 86.

I find it hilarious how the POI haters make all these excuses. Back in the fall you all said that a 2.9 demo made POI a “disapointment”. Last week when it hit 3.4 you said “it had no competition, just wait until next week!”. This week it drops to a 3.3 with major competition and you bash it.

Many young people that I know cannot stand comedy on major networks anymore, so it’s no surprise that POI and TAHM have different audiences.

And the POI bashers want to go back to 2005 and try and compare Grey’s season 2 to POI season 2? Did you ever hear of declining ratings for network tv and cable tv? There are more choices now than 7 years ago. And then you want to say that Grey’s had more total viewers in season 2 than POI? If you have read stuff on this site you would know that total viewers means nothing.

We get it, you don’t like POI. Just stop ridiculing it every week with sorry little excuses.

but back to ABC I’m sure they got Wipeout ready to go

Actually, no they don’t. They did not order winter episodes for Wipeout season 6. They probably thought they had enough midseason replacements: The Taste, Celebrity Diving, Red Widow, Zero Hour, How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life), Family Tools, Body of Proof, The Bachelor, Celebrity Wife Swap, and the remaining episodes of Primetime: What Would You Do?

The big question is everyone going to get a million dollar an episode check on TBBT considering its becoming a smash. Whats amazing about TBBT is it started modest at 8.3 million and is now a mega phenom. The difference is Friends was a phenom to begin with this show has grown into a mega smash. Its huge in syndication. I expect huge huge pay raises. BTW if Mayim Balik does not win an emmy its ludicrious. She is a scene stealer and absolute brilliance on my screen.

Scandel WOW it didn’t go down at ALL. I think Scandel has the best retention any show after Grey’s. IMO its a super hot show that demands to be seen. Its crazy to think it started as a very late midseason replacement and it barely got renewed to surging. Shonda has a hit show on her hands. Its a lock for a third season renewel. IMO it deserves tons of nods. I am on the edge of MY FREAKING SEAT watching it. Its RIVETING TV.
