Up,down.Neilsen make up ours minds.Don’t know very many soap fans that miss there soaps for a week.We do have DVR’s.Need a better rating system.

  • Lance

Now that NBC has renewed DAYS for another year, we can now get a clearer picture on where their ratings need to be so this okay.

2013 has already started with a bang for the genre with that DAYS renewal and AMC & OLTL coming back to life.

    GOOD TIMES AHEAD!

  • Robbee65

As long as RV and RC aren’t going to leave GH I don’t care what happens to AMC and OLTL! GH has seen a very big resurgence in the past year and they are only getting better!!!! Clearly RV and RC know what we veiwers want to see. With GF comming back things could only get better. They know how to write characters!!! If PP can’t woo LaLucci back then they will have a big problem! GH needs to keep the transplants from OLTL!!!!!

This was expected after the holiday. One thing I did notice is that Y and R hit a 3.7 on Wed. That’s great. In addition that was the show’s strongest episode in my opinion since Josh and Jill came on board. Good news.

2013 will hopefully be a solid year for all the shows.

Soap Opera get The CW ratings? if you think about the past.

  • Heather

People talk as if AMC and OLTL will necessarily return. You guys seems to forget that Prospect Park already fooled us in the past. What makes you think it can’t happen again?

Until the first episode of AMC and OLTL have aired, I will continue to remain skeptical about these soaps ever coming back to life. And quite frankly, I would prefer that they don’t come back. I enjoy the OLTL characters on GH (especially Todd). They are a great addition to the show. That last thing I want to see is Prospect Park coming in and take away these characters to put them in their poor imitation of OLTL that will have 0 resemblance to the show that used to be on ABC (that is of course, if they even succeed in relaunching OLTL in the first place).

It’s very funny to put ratings in perspective. Any of the soaps daily ratings (without counting soapnet, DVR beyond one day, watching them online at the network’s website, etc) would make them a huge hit on cable or the CW. And, GH gets as good as ratings as Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the B, and the network loves and is committed to those shows, and Y&R beats most comedies on NBC in ratings. Also, was looking at late night ratings, GH beats Letterman most days, and B&B and Y&R beat all of the late night shows almost everyday, along with almost every talk show. And, the soaps cost less per episode than any of those shows. Funny how everyone expects giant ratings from the soaps, but what constitutes a hit in lots of other places on TV is lower rated.

Love General Hospital should not kill of Trey he is great – Miss All My Children
Also enjoy Young and Eestless and Vold and Beautiful

Use DVR they should be counted in ratings

  • Derrick

Well, the gains didn’t last long!

Did hear B&B is #1 in woman 18-34. Congrats B&B!!!!

  • Sue

WOW – doesn’t surprise me that DAYS is in last place – has been crap for years … ignoring ppls favourites – the VETS who have been on for 15+ years … the ones we all grew up watching – not these newbies like pets from other shows or rapists RAPEMANCING their victims. Far from Popular by the AUDIENCE ENGROS… you have another year and a half to pick this up and see what real fans want. SNAP IT UP!

  • Lynn

It amazes me how week after week “TV By the Numbers” chooses to stress negative news about soap ratings instead of positive. For example, “B&B” hit number 1 in the 18-34 category for the first time in its history. That’s pretty big news, but “TBTN” goes for “all soaps down in households.” It gets tiresome, and one begins to believe that “TBTN” has an ax to grind with the four remaining soaps. The genre is experiencing a resurgence. Is that a problem for “TBTN”? Also, your site is very lazy about releasing ratings for soaps in a timely fashion, as opposed to prime time where you practically publish the ratings before the shows air (or in the case of “Miss America”, you’re asking viewers to predict the ratings! Really???) Come on, “TBTN” — you can do better for daytime.

  • IowaMan

@Lynn: I’m actually amazed that they even bother with the soaps because you are so right.

But it’s not just the soaps here. They have a ridiculously annoying habit of negative spin for a lot of things.

Anglo Saxon writing American Soap Operas are dead! Telenovelas will have worked if My Network TV used American Top Literature instead remaking South American or Mexican Telenovelas! I hated Rich Man format theme soaps! Most women in America have jobs now! Demos are changing! ABC, NBC, and CBS stuck with tradition plot soaps! Telemundo and Univison are beating Big Three network soaps! They aired Telenovela when their demographics are home from work! This opinion is my opinion!

I have to say that reading your previous comments made me watch GENERAL HOSPITAL to see how wonderful it was….because you write so many good comments about the show. Indeed, I did it, I tried to watch GENERAL HOSPITAL for some days and the show WAS A MESS. The most horrible writing I’ve ever seen. I love The Bold and The Beautiful…I think it’s fresh and young. I also watch the young and the restless but not always. I think american writers should have a look at the british soaps like EASTENDERS and EMMERDALE…they are still on top of the ratings in England and the storylines are more dynamic….

  • LynTX

Saw this article at B&C. Don’t understand relevance of all the ratings demos, but CBS touting C3 (25-54) group. Looking for all positives?

Perhaps the soap downturn has bottomed out relative to other genres. A year ago, the haters were death watching GH and DOOL and dancing on the graves of AMC and OLTL. Now AMC and OLTL are coming back into production in one month, DOOL is renewed before any comparable NBC prime time show other than The Voice, and GH is flying high with no one seriously predicting its cancellation on the eve of its 50th anniversary. New talk shows are pulling in underwhelming ratings and NBC is more worried about “Today” than “DOOL.”

  • Mike

So proud of B&B picking up in the 18-34. That demo has been a hard one for them for awhile.

As far as the drops, I for one fully expected to see them. People went back to work and couldn’t watch live again. If some of those gains were new viewers, then the key will be to watch and see if they pick up recording them or not.

  • Kayla Rae

So happy that DOOL has been renewed…and I’m not the least bit surprised that it has been renewed. I’ve been saying it here on this forum over and over again…assuring the gloom-and-doom naysayers that Days would most assuredly be renewed. Told you so!

Go Days! Days is the most excellent soap on tv!

  • cab

Thank you NBC. Days is still the best show on. The past week has been incrdible. So much drama. Everyone now seems to have a storyline, and a very interesting storyline at that. I record it everyday now and can not wait to see what is happening. Can not wait for the next Horton tree decorating for next year and many more years after that.

  • TimsDale4ever

Y*R still way down in total viewers and with woman. We’re over 3 months in with the new regime — how much longer are they going to be given before Sony/CBS realize they’re brnging crap to the table? And lol, last week I posted something about characters standing around talking about what coffee they will be ordering, and omg, on Friday’s episode Neil nad his next girl were doing JUST THAT! — in 2 different scenes at that. And more and more and more “who’s working where” conversations. Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!
