Last Updated January 16, 2013
Though it looked like we would hear something on the fate of Alphas by the time this was posted, looks were deceiving. Update January 16: Alphas has been cancelled.
As of this writing The Killing is also still not officially resurrected for a third season despite any reports to the contrary that you may have read. But the production team has been mobilizing in preparation for an official pick-up from AMC. I'd hoped we might here something officially official (whether a renewal announcement or an official denial of it) at the TCA press tour rather the same old speculation about AMC and Netflix co-financing a third season, but not so far. Update January 15: It's official: The Killing is back for a third season of 12 episodes.
Unsurprisingly, Leverage producer Dean Devlin is still shopping around in hopes of finding a new home for the show and wouldn't be opposed to doing a featured film version of the show. That is pretty standard post-cancellation talk. Less common: Leverage did win the favorite cable drama in this year's People's Choice awards, the first time that's happened with a cable show according to Deadline.
Changes This Week:
I'd already added the December batch of renewals to the last update, so there's nothing new on that score though the officially official renewal announcement for USA's Necessary Roughness came out earlier in the week.
I tried to get all the changes to "current/last" season straightened out for the crop of shows that have begun airing again. Though tomorrow (Sunday 1/13) season premieres of the HBO & Showtime shows hasn't happened yet as of this writing, I updated their statuses as if they had.
If I missed anything and you find errors or omissions (excluding unscripted shows, kids shows or shows that have not aired yet) please note them in the comments and I'll update the table.
Notes:
- Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
- I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
- Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately air in the states.
- Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.
- Yes, I know there will be a Doctor Who still has the remainder of season 7 to air and that there will be an anniversary episode, but as far as an 8th season goes, there's still no official announcement.
Last Updated January 15, 2013
Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

I can’t see how Lifetime takes so long to renew Drop Dead Diva.
The walking dead have been renewed already
@Bitter: darn – I was working from two lists last time around and didn’t get them quite synced up. That one’s fixed, if you see others let me know.
Re: Leverage, Deadline: The chatter there was inane – a movie?
Or, maybe not – look at a movie like Pitch Perfect – cost maybe $15 million, grossed $65 million or so – at $9 per ticket, 7 million or so saw the film (not accounting for multiple viewings – actual discrete audience was a bit smaller).
Gross audience is not that large. Demos, if it all was seen in one weekend, would be the bomb – but if I recall, the film lasted at least 4 or 5 weeks doing top ten business.
So, I have to wonder if ANY film release would massively affect broadcast viewing for any program (even a Twilight movie against Supernatural). Because, let’s face it, not even Twilight did audiences that were that huge (let’s say $450 million US gross, at $9 per ticket) – total gross audience is 50 million, less multiple viewing persons, so fewer discrete people seeing the film than that – over at least six weeks.
5 million tickets sold for a potential Leverage movie (based on the gross audience numbers, not unreasonable) at $9 per, less a Pitch Perfect budget of $15 million (adjust upward $5 million for salaries, especially Timothy Hutton’s), and a Leverage movie could make sense, and possibly draw 8 million ticket sales…especially as it would have something Pitch Perfect did not have – an Academy Award winning star on the credits.
It looks like your CSS for the table is broken. The table is wider than your main content div, resulting in some text in the Status column being cut off.
The table wasn’t broken, just the person who posted it! Fixed.
I give up on Syfy. We’ve gone from November, to December, and now to January. For God’s sake flip a coin already and be done with it!
As much I like “Leverage” and want more episodes, the series got a TRUE series finale and closure. IF another network pick the series up (which I think is unrealistically but was mentioned months ago on a convention), I would be VERY happy. If not I’m only sad because the cast and crew have to find new jobs. I don’t watch “Alphas”, but hopefully the fans will get another season to wrap things up.
Robert – quick – fix spelling typo (“…we might HERE something…”) !!!
First they took 5 months before cancelling Sanctuary, now they’re taking their sweet time with Alphas. Seriously, screw SyFy.
“First they took 5 months before cancelling Sanctuary, now they’re taking their sweet time with Alphas. Seriously, screw SyFy.”
Do not confuse “no news” with “no decision”.
And given the opportunity, networks would never make the news of a cancellation public, ever. But the reality of a show never appearing on their schedule again, actors contracts lapsing, etc. means that the news will eventually get out, even if they’d rather it not.
What’s up with Mtv taking so long with Beavis and butt head?
As much as I love Leverage, I am glad it isn’t getting a movie. It got a great ending and it should just be left alone now. I would like an ending to Alphas too, though. Season 2 had a great cliffhanger ending in my opinion but I’d like some closure.
Wasn´t Workaholics renewed for 2 more Seasons? (S5 & S6)??
I’ve no doubt Syfy wants to keep Alphas. The problem is persuading Comcast that it’s still a good investment. Similar situation to the negotiations over Eureka.
Wasn´t Workaholics renewed for 2 more Seasons? (S5 & S6)??
this was another one that was updated correctly in the last update that wasn’t properly updated here (now fixed). It was renewed for 2 more seasons, though the way they wound up accounting for everything it’s a 4th & 5th season rather than a 5th and 6th.
SyFy’s promos for 2013 show clips from Alphas. Are there more episodes of the second season or did someone not get a memo about a third season? Just wondering.
Second season of The Lying Game started on Tuesday, so current season should be 2.
@Patrick I know there are no new episodes of the 2nd season, not sure if clips are any sort of positive confirmation though.
what is taking syfy so long to come to a decision about alphas, they’re not going to get any more ratings data so just decide already!
