Though it looked like we would hear something on the fate of Alphas by the time this was posted, looks were deceiving. Update January 16: Alphas has been cancelled.
As of this writing The Killing is also still not officially resurrected for a third season despite any reports to the contrary that you may have read. But the production team has been mobilizing in preparation for an official pick-up from AMC. I'd hoped we might here something officially official (whether a renewal announcement or an official denial of it) at the TCA press tour rather the same old speculation about AMC and Netflix co-financing a third season, but not so far. Update January 15: It's official: The Killing is back for a third season of 12 episodes.
Unsurprisingly, Leverage producer Dean Devlin is still shopping around in hopes of finding a new home for the show and wouldn't be opposed to doing a featured film version of the show. That is pretty standard post-cancellation talk. Less common: Leverage did win the favorite cable drama in this year's People's Choice awards, the first time that's happened with a cable show according to Deadline.
Changes This Week:
I'd already added the December batch of renewals to the last update, so there's nothing new on that score though the officially official renewal announcement for USA's Necessary Roughness came out earlier in the week.
I tried to get all the changes to "current/last" season straightened out for the crop of shows that have begun airing again. Though tomorrow (Sunday 1/13) season premieres of the HBO & Showtime shows hasn't happened yet as of this writing, I updated their statuses as if they had.
If I missed anything and you find errors or omissions (excluding unscripted shows, kids shows or shows that have not aired yet) please note them in the comments and I'll update the table.
Notes:
- Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
- I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
- Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately air in the states.
- Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.
- Yes, I know there will be a Doctor Who still has the remainder of season 7 to air and that there will be an anniversary episode, but as far as an 8th season goes, there's still no official announcement.
Last Updated January 15, 2013
Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

Sigh… We’re now into 2013 and you’re STILL showing Sanctuary? I mean, seriously? The show is GONE, guys! Take it off the list!
As for Alphas, I’m writing that one off. No decision means no renewal in my opinion. They’re not even spending time considering it or they would have had a decision by now.
Keep an eye for Transporter – The Series. That will air in Canada starting this month and on Cinemax in the US in June. The only question is will it ever finish shooting its episodes. They did 12 episodes, then star Chris Vance was injured and shooting stopped ever since. In addition, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the show was pretty expensive – some $40 million, due to extensive on location shoots. I’ve seen 11 of the 12 episodes – the 12th hasn’t aired anywhere yet apparently. It’s a pretty cool show, well done, lots of action (especially car chases given the premise of the show), and generally pretty much captures all of the ambiance of the Jason Statham movies.
God I hope Cinemax renews Hunted for a 2nd season!
Is Mad Men still on? Seems like it has been a few year since the last one, have lost interest.
@Jo – Ummm… the last season ran March to June of 2012. So, you know, less than a year ago. Doesn’t speak well of your attention span.
When will you remove cancelled shows from the list?
Take Sanctuary off the list! It’s last episode aired in 2011!! THIS IS 2013!
to those complaining about canceled shows staying on the list: there is some utility in keeping them around and no cost.
Credit where credits due, I did refute the points made about contracts for the Alphas cast and said that would have absolutely no bearing on the show being renewed when people said mid December they’d hear something.
This show is absolutely 100 percent dead in the ground. And to be fair I did encourage people to get behind the show on some of the cable posts on here whilst the show was on the air.
By no means am I gloating but I hate to say I told you so. I also said Haven would be renewed weeks prior, and said Warehouse 13 will get a final season. Let’s see how right I am on that prediction
Is there anything to report on XIII and Reelz?
What about the Audience Network shows; any chance of including shows like Rake or Hit & Miss being included on your list?
@Bill, this incarnation of B&B did OK in the ratings, but I hear that it got the “wrong” demographics for MTV. Not enough teens watched it, just adults who grew up with the original incarnation of the show! Supposedly MTV doesn’t know what to do with that audience. It’s not their target demo and not their usual advertisers. There was some suggestion that they might shop the show around to other networks, but we know how often THAT works out — not very often. Even so, it’s animated so they could theoretically resurrect it at any time, 1 year, 10 years, 30 years from now, as long as Mike Judge is still alive.
It was reported this week that Episodes returns in 2014.
@Johnny
I’ve read in many websites that Cinemax will continue with Hunted, but it won’t be a second season but a spin-off. I don’t know what that means in terms of story, but if they throw away all the mythology of the series in this “new show,” I’ll be pissed off.
I’m surprised you don’t have any Disney Channel shows. Most of the cable shows I watch are reality shows like Storage Hunters, Storage Wars, Hollywood Treasure, Haunted Collector, Paranormal Witness, Fact or Faked Paranormal Files, some Hoarders, Shipping Wars, Mysteries at the Museum, Baggage Battles, Toy Hunters etc. I know about Victorious on Nick, but what See Dad Run?
Syfy has to be one of the worst networks for a person’s favorite show to be on there. The shows air for 2 months, and than they are gone for what seems like 8 months, and you search and search when are they going to be on again?? They have too many shows on syfy, and not enough of any one show.
I think Beavis & Butthead is cancelled for MTV. I know there is no official decision, but it hasn’t been on in so long. It last aired Dec 29, 2011!
As far as old shows go, they’re useful as a benchmark for what the network might do. For example, the scenario with Alphas is very similar to the scenario for SGU; both in their second season with middling ratings despite improved storytelling. Alphas is almost certainly cancelled based on that alone. The lack of an official comment is most likely to allows as much time as possible for the show to pass out of public awareness before pulling the plug.
What about Bunheads? Aren’t they in their second season?
TV Line and Deadline are reporting Alphas is cancelled
Well, SyFy has absolutely no good programming left. Only a matter of time until they go the G4 route and are completely revamped.
I can’t wait for The Client List! Season 2 begins in March.
