During First Week in New Time Period “Nightline” Ranks No. 1

Versus its CBS and NBC Competition

in Total Viewers and Key Adults 25-54 Demo

In its first week (January 8-11, 2013) in its new time-slot, “Nightline” ranked No. 1 versus its CBS and NBC competition in Total Viewers and in the key Adult 25-54 demo, topping CBS’ “Late Late Show Show with Craig Ferguson” (1.426 million and 649,000, respectively) and NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (1.584 million and 751,000, respectively), according to Fast National Preliminary Live + Same Day Nielsen data.

“Nightline” improved ABC’s performance in the time period on the same nights last year (January 10-13, 2012) by 24% in Total Viewers (1.753 million vs. 1.411 million), by 11% in Adults 25-54 (811,000 vs. 729,000) and by 6% in Adults 18-49 (596,000 vs. 563,000).

During its first week in the new time slot, “Nightline” aired Diane Sawyer’s exclusive interview with Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly; had an exclusive interview with the family of Junior Seau, the NFL superstar and family man whose suicide shocked the nation; reported on radical young Americans who say they won't live under America's laws; reported on the big business of college partying and its effect on future careers; had Brian Ross’ undercover investigation into one of the biggest investment frauds in American history; and featured interviews with the cast of “Django Unchained” and Cyndi Lauper, among other reports.

On January 11, 2013, ABC’s “Nightline” drew 1.720 million Total Viewers, 827,000 Adults 25-54 and 620,000 Adults 18-49.  “Nightline” hit its 2nd strongest performance in its new 12:35 a.m. time period in both Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.

“Nightline” outdelivered CBS’ “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (1.407 million, 650,000 and 493,000, respectively) by 313,000 Total Viewers, by 177,000 Adults 25-54 and by 127,000 Adults 18-49.

ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Bill Weir. Juju Chang is a correspondent. Jeanmarie Condon is the Executive Producer. The program airs weeknights from 12:35 a.m., ET to 1:00 a.m. on the ABC Television Network.  Together with “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Nightline” is part of ABC’s winning late night strategy of airing news and entertainment programming.

Nightline is getting crushed by Fallon (more so if they’d show the half hour they do compete) but the fact that Nightline is that close to them comparing 30 minutes to an hour is telling Nightline isn’t that popular at that hour

  • Gary Middleton

GAR, I guess thusfar ABC has gotten everything it needed. Kimmel’s full hour has matched or exceeded the Nightline season-to-date half-hour number, so those comparisons aren’t embarrassing. Nightline’s 12:35 number has given them enough ammo for the stretched-logic comparison to full hour 12:35 competition. And above all the total 11:35 to 1 a.m. programming block has done significantly better with Kimmel batting leadoff.

That last sentence Gary was what I was trying to tell you all I predict will happen during the switch. Nightline goes from 0.9 to 0.8 while JKL goes from 0.6 to 0.9. That’s a +0.1 improvement in the ratings but could possibly be more.
