Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 13, 2013):

With the strong finish to its Fall ratings and its spring ratings start, ABC's Scandal has moved into the "certain to be renewed" range. While Robert beat me to that prediction, he moved Revenge down a notch. I'm not ready to do that. Even Revenge's season low 2.0 rating on Sunday night was only a tenth below my ABC scripted average for the week. After five years of running this site, the intramural warfare in our comments between Revenge & Scandal fans doesn't surprise me. All I can say is, bring your friends!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The problems with OUAT season 2 are less severe:

The addition of Captain Hook this season helps me overlook the some of the dull new characters (Mulan especially). Too many episodes featured less than inspired characters and storylines. However all eps were highly watchable and some even stellar. Just not quite as consistent as last season. More filler eps this season than last.

The last couple of eps were very exciting. Hope the trend follows through towards the end of the season into Season 3.

  • Fred

Yes Nolan was fantastic last season. But I’m sorry to say his character bores me to death this season. His best lines this season are when he teases faux Emily (real Amanda)about her new boyfriend being like 007 James Bond.

Nolan’s new love interests/employees are the worst part of the season. And he shares so many scenes with these unlikable characters.

Helen and the Initiative are sleep inducing. The entire Stowaway bar should be blown to pieces along with the everyone there except the gorgeous faux Amanda and maybe Jack (just to keep the love triangle alive with real Amanda).

That all said I still enjoy Revenge and will stick with it until the bitter end.

@Bill – I meant Scandal’s numbers were only OK ike a lot of last seasons midseason shows but I believe the fact that it was a Shonda Rhimes series helped it’s case.

The Friday night comedies can go either way, On one hand ABC has had its best friday in years and LMS and MC are regularly beating ABC’s Tuesday comedies. On the other hand the shows could do better. What I wonder now is that after February 22 both comedies will have 4 more episodes left in their orders. Is it possible that ABC orders more episodes to air through May or will both shows end their runs in late March early April?

Overall ABC isn’t doing that badly this year. Though a lot of series are down in numbers, ABC could be doing worse. I’m very curious to see how Body of Proof will do.

    The good news this season:

The Middle is consistently funny each and every week. Much like past seasons, but perhaps even funnier at times. Funniest sitcom on ABC.

Happy Endings was never as consistent but when its funny, oh my!! The ensemble is truly amazing.

Nashville is a fantastic new drama. I love the storylines and music. I am not even a country fan!

Last Resort is riveting every week. Very happy ABC gave the showrunners time to give it a proper ending. I will miss it dearly.

666 Park Ave improved drastically after the so so pilot. Can’t wait for ABC to air the remainder eps. Very well produced series. Such a shame.

I would add Scandal and Modern Family to this list, but I haven’t watched every ep this season. I have to catch up asap.

Scandal is the most exciting show. You won’t regret it.

  • Eva

I am very happy about Scandal. It is the little show that could! Considering it got so little promo when it first debuted, i am glad to see that it has been able to build an audience.

I also like Revenge. Sue me! I like both shows. But I will admit that Season 2 of Revenge has been a bit of a let down and I actually have a few shows saved up on my DVR to watch (that I am not clamoring to watch). Whereas Scandal has become appointment tv for me. Hope Revenge gets back to what made it so great last year and hope Scandal keeps getting better and better!

    @TV1 and Al

I like that your schedules both hag greys at 8:00.. Which I think is the only thing that can succeed there

“What I wonder now is that after February 22 both comedies will have 4 more episodes left in their orders. Is it possible that ABC orders more episodes to air through May or will both shows end their runs in late March early April?”

ABC supposedly has Primetime Nightline premiering on March 1 at 9 so I assume that is a major reason why the comedies have a bit of a shorter season. Shark Tank will most likely move back to 8. The comedies ending early are good news for both as they won’t air much in the spring.

Revenge and Scandal should both be renewed. Revenge should go down a bit after ABC moved it. Scandal didn’t go anywhere, which is fine, I like Scandal. But both should be renewed.

  • Judy912

You can’t expect a 10 PM TV series to perform as well as an 8 or 9 PM program. ABC please keep ‘Castle’ right where it is, Mondays @ 10 PM. If you have to move it at all, then move it to Tuesday but NOT SUNDAYS where any program opposite NBC’s Football is sure to fail.

  • rob60990

@Nick, so you want ABC to air their Sunday lineup against The Super Bowl & Grammys? Not to mention that ABC also airs the Academy Awards in February.

  • Bookworm

I don’t see ABC moving Revenge AGAIN and I don’t see Grey going to a new time slot. Scandal is probably being renewed for a full season–ABC has no reason to push it to a mid season with these ratings and even the ones before were good enough to push for a third season.

I also can’t see ABC pushing that many repeats for Castle.

  • Even Steven

The real question is how much longer before Scandal overtakes Grey’s Anatomy in adults 18-49? It might even be this week, I wouldn’t be surprised.

For people who have predicted ABC’s next fall schedule, I concur. If Zero Hour is not a hit for Thursdays at 8pm, that is 3 failed attempts at success (the others being Charlie’s Angels and Last Resort). So now that Scandal is a hit, I also think that Grey’s Anatomy will be moved to 8pm, then Scandal at 9pm, followed by a new drama (or Revenge if it continues to decline).

What I think would potentially work on ABC 2013-2014

    8:00 Once Upon A Time
    9:00 *New Drama*
    10:00 Castle

    8:00 DTWS
10:00 Red Widow (If it flops this spring then a new drama )

    8:00 DTWS results
    9:00 Shark Tank
    10:00 *New Drama*

    8:00 The Middle
8:30 How to Live With Your Parents (If it flops in the spring then a new comedy)
    9:00 Modern Family
    9:30 *New Comedy*
    10:00 *New Drama*

    8:00 Grey’s Anatomy
    9:00 Scandal
    10:00 Revenge

    8:00 Suburgatory
    8:30 Last Man Standing
    9:00 Malibu Country
    9:30 The Neighbors
    10:00 20/20

  • Brian I

I miss Revenge being on Wednesday. That was the highlight of my week and now that it’s on Sunday I just want to sleep while it on.

  • Dan

@Rob60990 – Didn’t know that about Primetime, I guess the ABC comedies will finish in March and Shark Tank will move to 8:00. Shark Tank deserves a better slot, ironically it first aired Tuesdays at 8 where it did OK now its doing great on Fridays. The Friday comedies arent doing horrible and they should remain in those slots until May. 18 episodes is too little as it 16 for NBC’s Whitney. Its a lot cheaper and easier to produce episodes of Multi Camera shows then it is for single cameras, so ordering more eps of the Multi Camera comedies wouldn’t be hard.

  • Lane

I think Nashville is going to be like Scandal. Both shows didn’t start off too great but the kept their viewers and both shows I didn’t watch but had a lot of people say good things about both which created good word of mouth and helped Scandal.
