Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 13, 2013):

With the strong finish to its Fall ratings and its spring ratings start, ABC's Scandal has moved into the "certain to be renewed" range. While Robert beat me to that prediction, he moved Revenge down a notch. I'm not ready to do that. Even Revenge's season low 2.0 rating on Sunday night was only a tenth below my ABC scripted average for the week. After five years of running this site, the intramural warfare in our comments between Revenge & Scandal fans doesn't surprise me. All I can say is, bring your friends!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Last Man Standing has higher ratings over Mailbu Country. I’m surprised to see that still as a “toss up”. Other than that…ABC is looking good.

, so you want ABC to air their Sunday lineup against The Super Bowl & Grammys? Not to mention that ABC also airs the Academy Awards in February.

No, of course I don’t want ABC to air them against the Super Bowl. That would be stupid. They would premiere on Feb 10th and skip Oscar week. Castle could maybe spare a week for the Grammys. OUAT would just have to go up against the Grammys once. They’re not the strongest at 8 pm, and it’s just payment for not having to air against the Golden Globes & the Football Championship Game.

I also can’t see ABC pushing that many repeats for Castle.

    What repeats?

  • Richard Steven Hack

I think Revenge will bounce back from that season low. We did have the Golden Globes on Sunday.

I do think Revenge has gotten slower about screwing people over, as Bob said above, and also the story line is getting a bit too complicated. I think the whole arc with the Ryan brothers is a waste of time and needs to end. They need to have Emily and Aidan find out about them and just take them out as a favor to Jack – it would be trivial.

With the reveal this week about Padma, I think Nolan is shifting back to being important, which is good. His other boy friend needs to go as he’s staggeringly boring. We know Nolan is bi, we don’t need it shoved down our throats with this lame.

The Initiative story line is OK, but there needs to be more reveals about them than just the one woman. Also, there needs to be some reveals about exactly who and what Takeda is and why he’s after the Initiative. In other words, they need to expand that fight into a bigger story line to make it more compelling.

In doing so, however, they should not make the Graysons into “victims”, but continue to emphasize what scum Conrad and Victoria are and keep them in Emily’s crosshairs. Conrad needs to make moves to take back his company from Daniel as well as part of the “revenge” motif.

  • Randy

I think a reason for Revenge’s low rating on Sunday was because most of the people don’t even realize that Revenge is new again. CBS didn’t put new episodes this week, and people probably think of CBS as the standard for when shows will be new again!

I think it’s really stupid that Revenge is back again, but it’s going away again after this week until Feb 10th. How can people keep up with such goofy on and off times? These shows / networks need to be more consistent as in when they bring back new episodes, and when they take them away. It’s too sporadic.

  • cameron

ive heard rumors that Gotham from last pilot season is still alive. does anyone know if that is true?

  • Bee

with the drama improving and great original music, nashville can be a big hit easily. it just needs more viewers, but they’ll be harder to get since the show is not the ultra juicy and twisty type. so no scandalous, bombastic promos to lure people in like revenge and scandal have. the best way is to have a marathon at some point or air repeats over the summer.

zero hour is bound to be a failure. tough timeslot + spring premiere + bad early reviews. red widow is their only hope. it just needs to be sampled.

  • B. Saget

Man I hate Scandal and it has nothing to do with my like of Revenge. What’s that about anyway?

Most of my shows are safe minus my favorite ABC comedy Happy Endings

I also like Dont trust the B but I won’t be too upset if it goes.

  • Evan

Honestly there really is no war going on between Scandal and Revenge fans. The two shows would NEVER even be compared if it wasn’t for “Max” constantly posting how much he LOVES Scandal and HATES Revenge. Without him there would absolutely be no comparing except for every once in a while. Max putting down Revenge makes Revenge fans just want to defend their show. Seriously I bet if he stopped posting there would be very little comparing going on UNLESS both shows started doing poorly and it was either one stays or one goes. It’s honestly quite annoying knowing that when I want to go and look at Revenge’s ratings and then read the comments that I know it’s all going to be Max and everyone replying to him, almost makes me not even want to look at the comments for Sunday/Thursday shows.

Anyways I’m hoping Revenge gets out of its slump as its ratings are dipping pretty low but it basically did the same thing last year. I’m guessing it’ll stay in the low 2’s and then towards the end of the season go back in the mid 2’s

  • Just Desserts

After today Nashville and The Neighbors are guaranteed to be renewed. :)

Awards buzz is likely to help.

  • Ram510

I just realized Scandal and Once Upon a Time both got the same 2.8

  • KJ Styles

@Bill Gorman- While Scandal’s ratings were never terrible, they were never great either. GCB’s ratings were similar to Scandal’s last year and it got cancelled, so I can see why that person said that ABC was patient with it, whereas they weren’t with GCB.

  • ThatsRightISaidIt87

Such a shame that Scandal will be renewed. That woman’s face could sour milk.

  • Melanie

Hope Scandal gets renewed. I think it is a great show, same for Nashville.

  • Fred

Keep in mind that OUAT had even more intense competition than usual.
Not trying to take anything away from Scandal’s amazing performance.
Both dramas are very high rated for ABC (just behind top rated Grey’s)

  • gerry

i wish people would stop wishing grey’s to 8 pm. ITS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN, PEOPLE.

  • Alan

Please Revenge don’t go above of those green smiley faces…

  • KJ Styles

@Gerry- Well then unless CBS moves BBT’s timeslot (which ain’t gonna happen) then every new ABC show that ever airs Thursdays at 8 will be cancelled. I don’t see Zero Hour doing any better than Last Resort did.

  • v

I’m guessing ABC continues to try build another comedy hour?
    Tuesday’s has failed so bad.

Neighbors is far from safe, we have to wait for Sarah Chalke comedy to air behind Modern Family.
ABC comedies seem to only work on Wed, so that’s prime real state.
