With the strong finish to its Fall ratings and its spring ratings start, ABC's Scandal has moved into the "certain to be renewed" range. While Robert beat me to that prediction, he moved Revenge down a notch. I'm not ready to do that. Even Revenge's season low 2.0 rating on Sunday night was only a tenth below my ABC scripted average for the week. After five years of running this site, the intramural warfare in our comments between Revenge & Scandal fans doesn't surprise me. All I can say is, bring your friends!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I think Nashville pairs way better with DWTS than Castle and Castles been there for so long. It’s syndicated now and it’s ratings are still okay. Move it to the dreaded wednesday time slot and see if it can still keep its okay ratings that will be seen as good for that day.
    Scandal also is doing very well and honestly does not benefit at all from Grey’s anatomy as the ratings show. Move it and use it as a lead in for a new Drama.
    S.H.I.E.L.D I was originally going to put on Wednesday but I think 10 pm is too late, this show is going to be a family show. Wednesdays the only non-female oriented programming day that’s why I was thinking that but the thursday 8 pm death slot could possibly do well for S.H.I.E.L.D as I see it being the next Revolution and then a new drama can air after greys.
    Finally Revenge hasn’t really benefitted much from OUAT and is pulling the same ratings as last year. Put a new Drama at 9 and stick revenge at 10 to pull in those 2-2.5 sometimes higher numbers that are good for a 10 pm show

  • The End

    Revenge won’t be moved from Sunday when it comes back for a third season along with Once Upon a Time. So fanboys/girls need to like forget that idea, you can insert your fav show after Once but in reality it just won’t happen.

    This is the pairing ABC will stick with. It’l be Once + Revenge every Sunday till one, or both shows either end, or are canceled, they both work well together too.

    Your only real ‘?’ is what will ABC put after Revenge in the 10pm slot on Sundays.

  • Nick

    @Devin

    Two things:
    1) DWTS Results cannot possibly be 3 days away from the performance show. The format of the show would not allow it. The only way that would happen was if the show stopped being aired live, which you don’t want to do if you don’t want the ratings to go down the toilet.
    2) Once Upon a Time should NOT be moved to 9 pm. It is in no way more family-friendly than SHEILD. It is doing fantastically in that slot. It’s the 3rd-best rated drama on TV, if I’m not mistaken. It would be a big mistake to move it to a later hour.

    @Evan

    I see it being the next Revolution

    How? Revolution was a show that premiered big, and then would’ve flattened without The Voice’s help. There is no help if you put it in the Thu @ 8 slot. I’d compare it to Once Upon a Time, a show that got roughly 400% retention when it premiered.

    @The End

    So fanboys/girls need to like forget that idea, you can insert your fav show after Once but in reality it just won’t happen.

    So far, out of all the shows people have put behind Once, my “fav” is Revenge. But guess what? Oh gosh, I put S.H.E.I.L.D.!!! I think you need to “like forget that idea”.

  • The End

    @Nick

    Apologies if injecting some reality into your fantasy schedule upset you.

  • Jason50

    I actually watched 4 episodes of Scandal the other day. Not my type of show but it was somewhat entertaining,I thought it would suck. It’s kind of like a poor man’s Homeland.

  • Grimman

    how strange they are playing out Last Resort, but removed 666… By the time the summer rolls around I will be on to different things. Just a di’k move imo.

  • andri ciccone

    666 park ave. malibu country last man standing? never watched.

  • keith

    Scandal is one of the best programmes i’ve seen in ages..I’m really glad its up to certain renewal..Being from the UK i have to hope that the viewers in the US watch to stop cancelation..A lot of my favourite programmes have been canceled im really glad scandal hasn’t joined that list.

  • Ryann

    As long as Nashville and Revenge return next season, I’ll be a happy lad!

    I really like Don’t Trust the B* but with its ratings it does deserve cancellation, I hope not but lets face it, it will.

  • Michael

    I love Revenge and it will be renewed each year! It’s so original, exciting,perfect!

  • Devin

    @Nick

    1.I don’t know why the results show can’t be moved to Thursday? The contestants can all still be practicing for the next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. It’s just that one of them will get cut on Thursday and that would really help ABC’s numbers on Thursday and they need a female skewing audience there.

    2. Paul Lee said he could see S.H.I.E.L.D on Sundays. That’s why I put it there. I think the network should have their strongest shows on at 9 (Modern Family, Grey’s, etc.)as a tent pole for the whole night.

  • Devin

    @ Match

    I have never heard of some of those new programs. Where can I find info?

    Thank you.

  • Nick

    @The End

    Apologies if injecting some reality into your fantasy schedule upset you.

    Apologies for failing third grade because you don’t know the difference between facts and opinions!

    @Devin

    1. I guess you could, but it would mean a bunch of changes and waste a lot of time. The main obstacle would be the producers choosing what dance to tell the contestants to practice. What if they were betting on x dance to happen and that person was eliminated? Also, the contestants couldn’t practice for group performances on Tues & Weds.
    2. That’s just a matter of opinion. I think it’s better if the top show is at 8, as the 8 pm show often gets neglected on tentpole nights.

  • Em J

    As long as Castle is still airing I am happy BUT I would hope it was still in the 10pm Monday slot I mean it has worked quite well there!

  • Alex

    Putting SHIELD and OUAT back to back might be a cool pairing and might get a bit of a “fantasy block” going if a similar series can be brought in.

  • TVADDIICT

    @Judy912, and Devin

    Putting Castle on Tuesdays would be the worst move, Castle will be dead if they put it on tuesday nights
    as it would be competing with NCIS which is a high rated show right now even putting it against NCIS La would kill it for sure.

  • TVADDIICT

    @ Devin looking at your schedule, Putting Castle on Tuesdays would be the worst move, Castle will be dead if they put it on tuesday nights as it would be competing with NCIS which is a high rated show right now even putting it against NCIS La would kill it for sure.
