Last week's 1.5 rating in The Mindy Project's 2013 start might not seem like much (and it isn't on an absolute basis), but it was 84% of the woeful Fox average scripted rating for the week, keeping the show shakily in the "toss up" range between renewal and cancellation. We may well get a more definitive read on its prospect from ratings in the rest of the season. Stay tuned.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old" Fall predictions in the table.
Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2013
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

If The Cleveland Show were to get canceled, what does that entail exactly? Since animation shows have long production cycles, would there be any leftover episodes to be aired next season (the 2013-14 season)?
“If The Cleveland Show were to get canceled, what does that entail exactly? Since animation shows have long production cycles, would there be any leftover episodes to be aired next season (the 2013-14 season)?”
I don’t track that, but many commenters have noted that its available episodes could all be aired this season.
I have a sliver of hope that Mindy gets a second season.
The Cleveland Show would be pretty easy to cancel too since they could just write the characters back into Family Guy without much problem.
@Jeff – No, according to FOX’s preliminary schedule through May, The Cleveland Show has 23 episodes for this season and 88 episodes total. All 23 episodes are scheduled to air through May, and unless the show gets a 13 episode midseason pick up for January, its basically done.
The Mindy Project I believe is likely to be renewed. Fox will probably salvage anything they can from this season and with Ben & Kate dead (as well as The Goodwin Games likely dead) along with Raising Hope and New Girl, my guess is FOX will try to save The Mindy Project. It’s 1.5 from last week is promising and it did beat comedies The New Normal and Apartment 23. Thats good enough for a FOX renewal if it can maintain those numbers.
I think Mindy will stick around for diversity’s sake. I’m not saying it’s not a good show, I actually really like it but it barely out-performs Ben and Kate and has a much stronger lead-in. I see it getting a second season.
@Bill, how much weight do you think, if any, does music sales factor into renewal chances in musical shows like Glee, Smash and Nashville?
@TV dude – I can can see after Cleveland gets cancelled, his family moving back to Quahog in his old house and some of the Cleveland Show characters living in Quahog. It wouldn’t be bad to have all of those characters on Family Guy since Family Guys doesn’t have as many recurring characters as The Simpsons.
@Keri – If retention out of New Girl is good and Mindy stays above a 1.5, it will get renewed.
“@Bill, how much weight do you think, if any, does music sales factor into renewal chances in musical shows like Glee, Smash and Nashville?”
It might advantage a toss up show a bit, but it’s not going to save a real ratings loser. Glee & Nashville ratings are fine, and we’ll just have to wait and see with Smash.
Cancel Ben And Kate, The Cleveland Show, and The Mindy Project, renew the rest.
What an absolutely idiotic show. My wife was watching it and I was catching bits and pieces of it and all I was thinking was how does this dreck even see the light of day. Oh well, to each their own.
I really wanted to love Mindy but it’s just super boring, seriously I would rather hurt myself instead of watching one more episode.

Midseason- The Cleveland Show
You have to explain to me how a show who can do better than a 1.5 is a “toss up” for renewal or cancellation. The Mindy Project is a big flop, and will never pass her first season.
Ben And Kate, The Cleveland Show and The Mindy Project will be cancelled.
if a show has a “put pilot” is that show always aired? Fox has Sleepy Hollow as put pilot and I am very interested to see this series
If American Idol fails miserably this season and so does The Following, we’re looking at next season being completely down in the dumps. FOX ratings standards will slip to no more than a 2.0!
I really wish FOX would put The Cleveland Show back on at 8.30pm and get rid of Bob’s Burgers. That show is just limping along for no good reason!
The Mindy Project should be cancelled given its terrible ratings and several reworkings since the show started. However, given how epically bad this season has been for Fox, it just might get an 11th hour renewal.
The Cleveland Show is dead. It’s ratings are abysmal and Fox already has a new animation on its way for next season (Police something) and the Flintstones waiting in the wings (although that’s probably going to replace the Simpsons in Fall 2014).
Cleveland Show is done because FOX wants a new animated show…and the rubber has hit the wall. Especially if it hasn’t been renewed yet :/
Bob’s Burgers will be around unfortunately, because of “syndication gods”…and apparently okay ratings.
