Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 13, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Fringe (F) final season 0.38
Ben And Kate  0.57
The Cleveland Show :| :| :| 0.62
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.71
Raising Hope      0.80
New Girl      0.95
American Dad renewed 1.23
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.28
The Simpsons renewed 1.56
Family Guy renewed 1.61
Bones renewed pending
Glee      pending

Last week's 1.5 rating in The Mindy Project's 2013 start might not seem like much (and it isn't on an absolute basis), but it was 84% of the woeful Fox average scripted rating for the week, keeping the show shakily in the "toss up" range between renewal and cancellation. We may well get a more definitive read on its prospect from ratings in the rest of the season. Stay tuned.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@SJ – The fact that so many other series have been performing horribly will be the thing that saves The Mindy Project. Since Ben & Kate will obviously be the one axed between it and Mindy, FOX will do everything they can to save Mindy. If The Following flops that basically says for FOX that their entire lineup flopped. Mindy will be renewed.

Also The Flintstones reboot has been dead for a while. Of course Seth is too busy with Family Guy, and American Dad and Cleveland show and his album that he doesn’t have time to develop the reboot. Go figure. So if Cleveland is axed Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, and American Dad will stay in their current slots and Murder Police will probably timeshare with AD or BB in the spring, or AD will move to 7:30 and MP will air at 9:30. All in all it seems that Cleveland is dead.

@Bill – If you incorporate Cleveland Show into the Renew/Cancel index, for the upcoming weeks, note that all 23 episodes are currently scheduled through May (via Foxflash) leaving no leftovers for next year, if that means anything. Its ratings have been marginal at best at 7:30 and the clock is ticking for Fox to order a fifth season. Not much other information but obviously animated shows getting renewed or cancelled would have to be sooner rather than later.

  • Bianca

I really hope MIndy gets a second season – It is a really great show, just needs to find its groove. plus it has a lot of publicity!

  • B. Saget

Raising Hope is looking better than it was. Good for them.
Cleveland show is okay but it wouldn’t upset me if it was cancelled, like others said he can get written back into Family Guy. Dear Fox: cancel Mindy project, it’s so annoying.

  • Evan

Fox is really screwed here I mean lets be real. Pretty much every show they have is failing them this year except for their animation block. Their comedy block is not doing so well except for Raising Hope and New Girl, which so far New Girl is down from last year but not by too much. Their only drama scripted shows getting renewed are Glee and bones which are both considerably down from last year. Bones is pulling like low 2’s which no show would have survived carrying that rating from FOX last year.

They better hope American Idol performs well and they really should have aired The Following after AI like they did last year with Touch to at least premiere big then move it to mondays. Fox is not looking good if The Following fails. I’m hoping it does well because I’m all for dramas and this show actually looks awesome

  • Craig

here’s hoping “The Following” is good. if not, i’ll be watching ZERO Fox programs (once “Fringe” concludes Friday)…

  • Nancy

Trust me it will be renewed.

  • Dan

The Following will probably be renewed for midseason next year if it does well, only because Kevin Bacon is contracted for 15 episodes a season.

FOX is doing badly this year because after they got rid of their OK performing dramas Lie to Me, Chicago Code, Human Target in 2011, they had less dramas the next year with Terra Nova and House, but after they opted not to renew the OK rated but expensive, Terra Nova for another season and then House ended its 8 season run. They only had the low rated Fringe, and Veterans Bones and Glee. Glee was moved to Thursdays which let FOX create a 2 hour comedy block but the comedies were gonna flop without Glee as a lead in which declined in viewers a lot since 2010. Plus X Factor, which they viewed as the next Idol for the Fall, did even worse in its second season even with Britney Spears.

So FOX has low rated veteran Bones and worse rated Mob Doctor on Mondays
Low rated 2 hour comedy block only getting in the 1.0-1.7 with New Girl breaking 2.0.
OK performing Wednesdays and Thursdays with The X Factor and Glee, but not amazing.
And Floundering Fridays with low rated Kitchen Nightmares and final season Fringe.
Sundays is the only glimmer for FOX with Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy and American Dad.

Hopefully with Idol and The Following the spring will turn out better but as far as this season goes Tuesday is a lost cause, which is why FOX may as well just premiere The Goodwin Games after Ben & Kate ends and start over next season.

  • Laura

Bones is doing the same and maybe better than Glee every week, without a lead. How is it Low-rated and Glee is ok-rated? LOL

  • Dan

The Mindy Project with all its retooling shows at least that FOX wants to save the show. Usually when a show is retooled, the network wants to attempt to save it, though a lot of the time, a show’s retooling leads to it’s demise.

In a few weeks we’ll see if the retooling actually changes the show or helps it ratings wise.

  • bunny

I have been an avid watcher of Bones. This last one left me a little disappointed. It was just out of sorts. I see Angela cutting back on her hours and if she leaves it will be a big gap in the show. So far it has been the same ones that is what makes a series number one. It is a refreshing series and not a reality show which is a plus.

  • The End

The renewal cancellation index for Fox is incredibly dire this season, mostly because there will be absolutely no surprises to come. Most of us knew Bones would be renewed, we know Raising Hope is coming back, that Glee will come back, the only real ‘?’ is the Cleveland show. He’l likely just be re inserted back into Family Guy and continued there.

  • andri ciccone

enjoyed the mob doctor.axed the Cleveland show since it the. Mindy show I actually liked.

  • Ruan

“The Cleveland Show” is getting canceled. There’s no other way they can include “Murder Police” in the Animation Domination block considering how all the other four animated shows have already been renewed. Unless they’re serious about a small animated block on Saturday, but that’s a LOOOOOOONG shot.

As to “The Mindy Project”, honestly, they should cancel it. I don’t think they will, but they should. Not because the show’s bad, I haven’t watched it, but they simply can’t trust low-rated shows if they really want the Tuesday comedy block. Considering how “Raising Hope” is doing OK and “New Girl” is just fine, it’s not a bad idea at all to at least try and put “The Goodwin Games”

  • Ruan

“The Cleveland Show” is getting canceled. There’s no other way they can include “Murder Police” into the Animation Domination block without getting rid of it, especially considering that all the other four shows have been renewed.

As to “The Mindy Project”, they should cancel it. I don’t think that they will, but they should. Not because the show is bad, I haven’t watched it, but because if they really want their comedy Tuesdays to work, they can’t rely on a show with that kind of rating. Since both “Raising Hope” and “New Girl” are doing fine, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to at least try and see how “The Goodwin Games” fits in the night and then premiere a new show next season.

As to FOX’s dramas, now that “Fringe” is ending, there’s nothing interesting.

Wow, now that I stopped to really think about it, FOX is in trouble. For real. Other than Sundays, every single night is having difficulties.

  • @TheEmulator23

They need to treat this like Many 1st year comedies, let it establish itself. I would add in a bigger name to help support her next year. She’s a gifted writer so no matter what happens, she’s not going away. She’s got the Indian-American Demographic all to herself. She’s an original goofy yet deep individual.

  • networkman

Chicago Code really had potential and FOX should of really tried to keep Lie to Me. A declining House and Terra Nova were not a good fit. Also FOX may need to split up that animation domination to help the other nights. As I stated before The Simpsons is on its way out the door. I feel it should end after its 25th season. It has always had the advantage of airing after Football games. But now it should air on Tuesday night to help the struggling scripted programs. Its loyal audience should want to follow its final season. And that is why I feel The Cleveland Show should not be cancelled. It may be needed on Friday.

    8pm Family Guy
    8:30pm Bob’s Burgers/Murder Police
    9pm Glee

    8pm Bones

    8pm The Simpsons (Final Season)
    8:30 Raising Hope
    9pm New Girl
9:30pm UNTITLED GOOR & SCHUR PROJECT w/Andy Samberg

    8pm X-Factor/American Idol

    8pm X-Factor/American Idol

    8pm American Dad!
    8:30 The Cleveland Show/Bob’s Burgers
    9pm BAD SEEDS

  • The End

Crazy schedule there. But the Fox cartoons will always be on a Sunday. So American Dad and Simpsons won’t ever be on the days you mentioned, but I like the idea of Glee on a Sunday.

It’d get murdered by the competition depending on the time of year it airs though.

  • Jon

Ben and Kate is gone, which is too bad. It’s a funny show, but let’s face it what rookie show is going to do well up against NCIS. It’s dead on arrival

  • Jon

Will people ever get tired of the Simpsons? It’s amazing how long that show has been on the air. There was a time I casually watched it now and then after the football season was over, but for some reason I always thought it was vastly over rated. I probably haven’t sat and watched an episode since the 90’s

  • Em J

if New Girl gets canceled before Ness (Nick/Jess) gets together then I swear to someone I will chop their heads off! I would be one pissed New Girl fan AND Shipper!
