Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 13, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Fringe (F) final season 0.38
Ben And Kate  0.57
The Cleveland Show :| :| :| 0.62
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.71
Raising Hope      0.80
New Girl      0.95
American Dad renewed 1.23
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.28
The Simpsons renewed 1.56
Family Guy renewed 1.61
Bones renewed pending
Glee      pending

Last week's 1.5 rating in The Mindy Project's 2013 start might not seem like much (and it isn't on an absolute basis), but it was 84% of the woeful Fox average scripted rating for the week, keeping the show shakily in the "toss up" range between renewal and cancellation. We may well get a more definitive read on its prospect from ratings in the rest of the season. Stay tuned.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I can’t speak for NBC or ABC, but Fox is not a profit participant in “Glee’s” music sales, so that would not be any factor in its renewal. As Bill noted, however, its ratings will take care of that decision.

I could see Fox picking up both Athena and Sleepy Hollow for next season. Let’s hope so anyways.

I think The Cleveland Show will be fine if it gets cancelled. I can see them planning some sort of event like an New Orleans type plot to happen and the entire cast move to Quahog. Would be good tbh since Family Guy has lacked recurring characters since axeing half of their background characters in that season opener.

People, do you really think FOX is going to cancel The Simpsons? It’s one of their highest rated shows, and their highest rated cartoon. Considering Fox’s performance on most other shows, I don’t think The Simpsons or Family Guy will be going anywhere anytime soon.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about the Mindy Project. It has hints of greatness, but overall is still a bit of a mess (funny given it’s original name). However, hoping it sticks around for the sake of diversity at least…

  • smitty

Time to dump mindy is a terrible show!

  • The End

And with The Following due to air today, this index became interesting again. Let’s be generic and assume it’l get 5 smiley faces on your next index.

  • timmay!!

How the hell can that awful show be renewed?

  • lei3

Fox had better not cancel Mindy! ABC already chucked Don’t Trust the B and if both get cancelled I’m going to be so mad!

  • sandera

The Mindy Project is unwatchable – a total, unfunny mess of a show. Ben & Kate was far funnier (even with the insufferable Nate Faxon) and it has already been axed. What’s the holdup with TMP? Get rid of it!

Yet another crappy show about a slutty girl

  • Bianca

this show is great and getting os much better! in the past two weeks the ratings went up 1.5->1.7->1.9. i think they are on their way.
