While the ratings for last night's second episode of Deception aren't in the calculations above, they are nevertheless in my mind as far as predictions go. For that reason, the Deception has now fallen to a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Early in a show's life predictions can change quickly, stay tuned.

NBC's sitcoms are a low rated junkpile at this point. I was tempted to push them all to "toss up", but instead I've simply moderated all the predictions. No more "certain renewal" or "certain cancellation" for now. Next week will likely see more revisions.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • The End

    @Peter Mazzilli

On that Monday ‘New Show’ slot, right after The Voice you’l be seeing Revolution Season 2.

Pity you missed this show out, I’m assuming you’re not a fan and hope that by not liking it, it’l magically vanish from NBCs schedule. Sorry to say, it won’t happen.

  • carbar

I love Guys w/ Kids – I actually LOL, but timeslot is bad IMO.
New Noprmal great cast, but gay theme is getting tired w/ a quickness. Love, Barkin, Nene, & grand-daughter of Barkin’s character.

  • Mark

TNN should definitely have more “light” episodes. They’re trying to make each episode to prove some point…

  • Just Desserts

NBC sucks without The Voice and it hasn;t even surpassed American Idle.

  • a p garcia

Deception is Scandal 2.0 for NBC and it isn’t even pulling Scandal #s.

  • Holly

Deception is Scandal 2.0 for NBC

Wait, I though Deception was Revenge 2.0…

  • Mark

Deception is terrible. I was only 11 mins in on the first episode and I was done. I would be shocked if it makes it.

  • DanOregon

I think NBC will end up pairing the Michael J. Fox sitcom with Go On next fall. They feel like very similar shows.

  • Brendan

Please don’t cancel Whitney i luv her show and this season totally rocks right now. Please keep it for a third season.

  • Marlene

Deception is a Great show it has good actors Megan Good is a great actress as well as Wes Brown and Tate Donovan they seem to have a good chemistry with each other I think people just didn’t or aren’t giving this show a shot because since it was being promoted it was said to be a “Revenge copy cat” and it’s not it has a faster story line and the story is different yes its Dramatic and actually watch worthy. People just have to be more open minded with it I think if it would have premiered with The Voice as a lead in with its younger viewers it would have done much much better.

  • Miranda

I would luv if they kept Whitney for another season because i watch it all the time.

  • Oliver

I would like them to cancel Whitney because it’s like a failed sitcom from the 90s that is somehow airing on NBC in 2013.

  • Jenny

How is Whitney beating The New Normal and Go On? WTF, what were the ratings for it’s last episode?

  • Oliver

    @Jenny

Whitney got 1.8 and 1.4, Goon got 1.5 and 1.7. Presumably one of them got additional adjustments, which put Goon below Whitney.

  • Oliver

No, wait, Goon’s second episode won’t be counted yet.

    So it’s Whitney’s 1.8 and 1.4 for 1.6 average, and Goon’s first episode which got 1.5.

If you throw Guys with Kids in the New Normal time slot, it would thrive. Nobody buys the idea that the New Normal is anything new OR normal. It is in fact SO far from reality (and only related to political agendas) that it distances the audience that was brought to NBC by Betty White and Parenthood. It was a loser from the start and trying to push that rope uphill is just dumb!

  • Oliver

NBC seems to be ordering a lot of comedy pilots. I believe they have ordered 9 already (on top of the MJF series order).

Be prepared for a comedy bloodbath.

  • Oliver

Correction: they’ve ordered 11 pilots already (inc. a presentation), and I expect more to come.

  • Rastaman

I enjoy Deception and would like to see a second season. The show has drama, intrigue, emotions and pits the excesses and above the privilage-wealthy against law enforcement. The down side and ultimate reality for the shows cancelation will be the in your face inter-racial love scenes and intimatcies of the show. The audience just isnt willing to except this aspect.

The show “Revenge” has a similar plot as “Deception”, the only difference, the characters/main actors are all white; and that’s easier for the predominately white viewers to except.

Deception would have been better served to have aired on HBO, Showtime, Encore or Cinemax where the viewing audience is a bit more open minded, and the writers-producers of Deception can take more risk for its global diversified viewers.

  • Nina

I absolutely love Deception! One of my favorites alone with Scandal! Give it a chance.I can’t wait for next weeks episode!l
