Update: American Idol scored a preliminary 6.0 adults 18-49 rating

American Idol has its Season 12 premiere tonight, which will see the much-hyped introduction of new judges Niki Minaj and Mariah Carey (oh, and there's Keith Urban too...). Will the new judging table bring in the viewers? The success of The Voice shows there's still interest in the reality-talent format, but will American Idol still prove itself to be the gold standard tonight? Last year's Wednesday season premiere earned a 7.4 rating, which was down from the previous year's 9.8 adults 18-49 rating. Make your predictions for tonight below and tell us why in the comments!

“(oh, and there’s Keith Urban too…)” Hahahahah! Now that’s funny!

  • American

I say TBBT repeat will win the night!!

  • Chuck_T

It should do pretty well especially in the 8PM hour.

  • Charmed

Why are the options so low (For AI standards) With Nicki and Mariah surely the ratings will be at least 7.5?

  • Oliver

The ratings of X Factor fell despite having Britney Spears.

  • J.G.

    8.1/25 million viewers

    6.5/20 million

Kieth Urban might be the one thing that keeps AI from completley tanking. People have been over Mariah since like 2000 and Niki Minaj is so out of the demographic of AI. Urban can pull in the Country demo.

  • Joseph

I really can’t decide! This really could make or break it! I think it will do well tonight though because people will want to tune in. It will have a better opportunity than X factor with britney as it clashed with the voice for its premiere

  • Steve

6.7; If Idol had dumped Randy Jackson and put more effort into revitalizing their format, I think it would’ve had a chance to stabilize and maybe trend back up in the ratings. But I don’t see how the Mariah/Niki feud is going to draw much fresh attention to the show. This season will probably see a similar percentage slide in the ratings as last season.

The Curiousity factor really isn’t that big since Mariah is more like a has-been and Niki is a skank that polarizes. JLo & Tyler were hot in their own merit. Mariah will probably be doning butterflies/Hello Kitty stuff.
    And Idol is tired.

After this week, next week will average around a 5.1 to 4s. Come spring, The Voice’s blind auditions will be beating Idol!

    AI: 7.1, CM: 2.7, CSI: 2.5, nashville: 1.9, Arrow 1.1, SPN 0.8

Hopefully it tanks. If not tonight, surely it will tomorrow.

  • Hubert R. Wentland

AI was down on each of its few past premieres I guess, and now that FOX is in huge trouble as a whole, I see the show pulling ‘only’ 6.5-7.0

  • Alan

I don’t know what to expect from this. Maybe some Nicki/Mariah fans will tune in.

  • Matt

I think the premiere will get high viewers because everyone is at least somewhat “interested” in the new judges…they have to take a look to see if it worth watching for the season.

  • Mr Mojo

I really see the ratings being much higher this year. People seem to think it is bad that Nicky it outside the normal demo for Idol. But if you are idol and trying to bring in a different demo to increase ratings Nicky will do it. I have talked to a lot of early 20’s people who stopped watching years back talking about how they are going to watch it again to see what Nicky does. Granted once the initial buzz wears off it will probably tank fast, but I expect big ratings tonight.

    7.5-8.0..but it will tank fast
