Update: American Idol scored a preliminary 6.0 adults 18-49 rating

American Idol has its Season 12 premiere tonight, which will see the much-hyped introduction of new judges Niki Minaj and Mariah Carey (oh, and there's Keith Urban too...). Will the new judging table bring in the viewers? The success of The Voice shows there's still interest in the reality-talent format, but will American Idol still prove itself to be the gold standard tonight? Last year's Wednesday season premiere earned a 7.4 rating, which was down from the previous year's 9.8 adults 18-49 rating. Make your predictions for tonight below and tell us why in the comments!

My guess is 6.8, IDOL is still better than The Voice & The X Factor, and still produces relevant stars. The Voice is ruining the brand of singing competitions by running their show twice a year.

On another note Nicki will be the surprise of the year, multiple reports say she brings the laughs and is the true star on the panel when seeing the first episode. People think she’ll be a disaster, but I think they are being over dramatic.

I would hardly call Mariah Carey a “has been” and Nicki Minaj has a HUGE fanbase. Just shows how out of touch some of you are!

    6.5 18-49
    20 Mil.

  • Phill

    6.2-6.8 seems reasonable

Don’t have a clue but since it has been trending down in the ratings by rather substantial drops the past few seasons, I will guess it will be in the low 6’s overall for the night. Maybe Idol needs some big red swivel chairs to rekindle all the excitement from years ago. Or perhaps the judges should wear blindfolds and earplugs to just sense the good or bad vibrations of the competitors.

It is rarely about the singing competitors and all about the judges’ star power/potential for outrageous behavior. I hope to see all of these cheesy singing competition shows disappear in my lifetime but I doubt that will ever happen.

A mid 6 demo then trend downward as it has been for a while. The steam is out of this show. It’s about the only thing that keeps FOX in play demo wise. Though not as powerful as it once was. It still has a few seasons left before the audience leaves completely.

Hopefully below 6.0, which is still pretty gigantic these days.

  • Mon

    about 6.0 I meant.

The phony feud between Nikki and Mariah should keep some viewers interested. But the only thing that is going to keep viewers are real talent. Hopefully, the producers will move away from the guitar playing musician/singers AND focus on strong vocalists. To answer your question as to why my predictions are in the 5.5-6.1. The answer is simple attrition…the show is old and the new megahit The Voice and Dancing with the Stars can barely pull in those numbers week in and week out. The show needs BUZZZZZZZ and judges aren’t buzz: new, phenomenal talent is!

Why is Niki wearing a tumbleweed on her head? Hope the premiere flops just because…

The real test for AI will be Thursday in 2 weeks when it’s head to head against a new TBBT episode. Tonight i’ll say 6.8 21 million viewers.

  • Nick

I know every one thinks all these singing competition shows are killing each other, but this is still American Idol, and the new judges panel is going to bring in A LOT of viewers. Should beat last season’s premiere, with probably 20-25 million viewers. It’s still the biggest show on television.

  • Sean

As a huge fan of Idol I want it to be up from last season. Minaj and Carey both have huge fan bases that should bring in viewers and Keith Urban’s present should keep the current demo in. The panel has received a lot of buzz and the show was the most googled show of 2012. i am going to say 25 mil and a 7.5 18-49 demo. But maybe that is just hope. lol

  • JONNYSBRO

I will say it does between 21-23 million viewers. Honestly people keep frowning about last season’s viewers dropping but yet it has found an emerging star in Phillip Phillips. I rather see a season come out with someone long standing and substantial then just a high rated season focused on judges. We can say what we want from the Lopez-Tyler years they found two solid stars in Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips. PP home is almost four million which will make it the biggest single of all time for an AI surpassing Carrie and Kelly’s singles. Plus his album is over 600,000. Its great for Idol and great for the show coming into that even though last season people thought went down it FOUND a great winner last year. Thats the magic of Idol its ability to create stars and the best show that makes u relaly feel attached to the contestants.

  • Joe

I really just think AI’s time as a phenomenon is done. I see the premiere getting a 6.5 and then quickly falling after that.

  • glover

The new judge panel looks awful. Bring Back Jlo and Steven Tyler!!

  • Sam

Considering both “The X-Factor” and “The Voice” took hits this season, “Idol” will suffer the same fate. Anyone who thinks this will score above a 7.0 is crazy. The landscape of television has changed in the last couple of years, coupled with the fact that reality singing shows are being spread too thin. I think the show will premiere with somewhere around a 6.0 but then fall to “The Voice” type numbers in the mid 4.0’s by the end of the season’s run.

  • lukas

    30 milions and 9,8

  • ThatsRightISaidIt87

Thing is there’s no talent to come out of these shows. They win, they vanish. Who cares? Does the world really need another screeching Carrie Underwood anyway? I say no, but I understand that some do enjoy exploding eardrums.

  • steve

Each year always tends to drop abit so I’m saying 6.5
