Update: American Idol scored a preliminary 6.0 adults 18-49 rating

American Idol has its Season 12 premiere tonight, which will see the much-hyped introduction of new judges Niki Minaj and Mariah Carey (oh, and there's Keith Urban too...). Will the new judging table bring in the viewers? The success of The Voice shows there's still interest in the reality-talent format, but will American Idol still prove itself to be the gold standard tonight? Last year's Wednesday season premiere earned a 7.4 rating, which was down from the previous year's 9.8 adults 18-49 rating. Make your predictions for tonight below and tell us why in the comments!

    I personally am tired of American Idol, I haven’t really been watching the last couple years but I definitely don’t want to watch now. I’m not a fan of Mariah or Nicki’s personalities. They both seem like stuck up snobs that both want all the attention. I actually feel bad for Keith, he’s only normal down to earth one.

    This will be the year “American Idol” comes back down to Earth.

    It will still win it’s time period in overall viewers and key demographics, but it will no longer be the massive mega-hit it was in it’s first decade.

    In short, it won’t be a juggernaut.

  • BL

    It will increase from last year because of the hype of Nicki and Mariah but then it will fall behind later in the season.

  • JR

    I’m just sick of all these dudes with guitars. Enough of that, please.

  • TVMAN

    @ThatRightISaidIt87. There’s no talent that comes out of other shows EXEPT IDOL. IDOL has produced some of big stars every year. In most recent years they’ve discovered singers like Adam Lambert (Platnium selling artist & had a #1 album last year), Scotty McCreery(Platnium Selling artist & had one of best selling new Xmas albums this yr). Jessica Sanchez (To appear on couple eps of Glee this year/ to release duet with Ne-Yo). And last seasons winner Phillip Phillips ( Smash hit Home has sold almost 4 MILLION copies and his album just went Gold)

  • POI

    I HOPE AND WISH IDOL GOES DOWN AND DOWN UNTIL THERE IS NO MORE IDOL THESE SHOWS RUIN TV.

  • CenterGravity

    My guess is that it’ll be sucky.

  • Jason

    I think they could return the show to just 3 judges if the ratings plummet, except use two girls and a guy in order to get more guys to watch because lately, the teenage girls have been voting too much for the guy to win, but if two of the judges are female, more guys could step in and vote for a female to win. That’s only fair. We’ve had more than five years of nothing but guys winning. Of them, Scotty and Phillip are riding on top of the charts. The others, not so much.

  • Dillan

    Because X Factor rated low, despite having Britney Spears, I’m not expecting tonight’s episode to beat last year’s premiere. I think maybe a 6.2.

  • joel

    @Jason, I don’t think viewer demographics are determined by judge demographics. But in terms of civil rights fairness they should have balanced out gender on the judging panel. Randy is the only male judge.

  • outlawz

    i cant wait for tbbt return n destroy this shiity show

  • TVMAN

    @Joel. Randy is not the only male judge. Keith Urban is considered a male as well.

  • joel

    @TVMAN,
    By who, Nicole Kidman? Like I said, Randy is the only male judge.

  • JONNYSBRO

    Tell me what freaking show in its 12th season is still a juggernaut. This show has probably made BILLIONS of dollars all around. Biggest show of all time. I am really interested in the new panel. Again nobody is mentioning how successful Scotty/Phillip are. Its not like the show hasn’t had losers. Its the only show to create stars.

  • Bloop

    It’s hysterical to me that J Lo wasn’t a has been in 2011 but Mariah Carey is. Mariah had the #1 song of the last decade.

  • Bob

    @Joel,

    Too dang funny! I am so glad for the laugh. You made my day, but watching tonight, I can see myself suddenly cracking up and my family just looking at me wondering what drugs I am on….lol.

  • TimsDale4ever

    Who knows, but damn-n Ryan is soooooooooooooo FINE in this picture!

  • ThatsRightISaidIt87

    @TVMAN

    Figured someone would come in moaning on with silly stats. Who cares? All those people you mentioned are already yesterday and will be forgotten in 5 minutes. If they were actual stars or actual talents everyone would know them, not just people who watch IDOL. I don’t watch Idol and so have no idea who Scotty McCreery, Jessica Sanchez, or Phillip Phillips even are.

  • fx

    Still trending down. About a 7.1. Will continue to drop.Not as sharp as last year. Shock of fall edition of idol i.e. X FACTOR, already priced in. Without the drain of X fox could still have a super spring hit for a couple more years

  • JulieDawn

    I have a feeling that it will premiere really well tonight – maybe even over 7.0 for the curiosity factor. But if Niki Minaj is as horrific as I fear, many won’t come back, at least not regularly.

    Unless they only come back to support poor Keith Urban, who I fear will get stuck in the middle.
