Update: American Idol scored a preliminary 6.0 adults 18-49 rating

American Idol has its Season 12 premiere tonight, which will see the much-hyped introduction of new judges Niki Minaj and Mariah Carey (oh, and there's Keith Urban too...). Will the new judging table bring in the viewers? The success of The Voice shows there's still interest in the reality-talent format, but will American Idol still prove itself to be the gold standard tonight? Last year's Wednesday season premiere earned a 7.4 rating, which was down from the previous year's 9.8 adults 18-49 rating. Make your predictions for tonight below and tell us why in the comments!

in terms of talent shows, there’s no competition. the voice and x-factor do not compare at all and idol is in a league of its own. even with heavily declining ratings last season, the winner’s album has gone gold and his lead single “home” has been a huge hit and is STILL at #9 on itunes.. after it was released in late may 2012!

2-3 seasons in and the voice and x-factor have produced NO ONE. anyway, i predict the show will do very well tonight cus of the 3 new judges. mariah and keith are the most legit judges they’ve ever had and nicki is a big star right now too. personality and drama will be there for sure. i hope the scripted shows aren’t too affected tho.

Since it was off 30% last year, that would drop it to 5.3, but I don’t think the drop will be that severe (yet, hopefully) so I voted 5.5 to 6.1, thinking 6.0 would be about right

    6.9 demo = 15.9 total.

It’s gonna premiere high, but dip right after.

  • Mark

    American Idol – 7.1

  • Melissa

Remember that one year where American Idol premiered with nearly a 16.0 and 40 million viewers? Those were the days.

  • Patrick Ausgewahlt

I predict a 6.0. Last year it premiered high but dropped to a season low of 3.4 midseason. The results show, especially going against TBBT, will fall low.

  • Leondre

    18.40 million 5.9

The X-Factor proved buzz does NOT translate into strong ratings.

  • JoJo

I’ll personally be watching Arrow instead..but I expect the Idol premiere to do pretty well. I just hope Arrow doesn’t get crushed tonight..but have a feeling it will be a season low considering the competition.

  • CenterGravity

    Hawaii 5.0.

  • JR35

I don’t think it will drop to 5s and 4s in a single week.

There’s been an annual decline, so that could continue this year. Perhaps not as sizable, though?

@ThereISaidIt. Obviously not everyone is going to no the name of every winner. The people I mentioned are in fact NOT yesterday. For example, Adam Lambert debut album debuted at #3 when it released in 2009, he released his 2nd album in 2012 and it debuted at #1 on the billboard 200. Scotty released an album that debuted at #1 in 2011 and went to sell over 1.1 Million copies, in 2012 he released a Xmas album that debuted at #4. Finally Phillip Phillips released Home as his winning single last May, it has NEVER left the top 10 on iTunes since & a ton of people no his name. Your saying all these people are ‘yesterday’ but the facts don’t support it. Compared to The Voice and XFactor who can’t seem to find anyone who can sell squat, and IDOl who can continue to bring out Platnium selling artists almost every year, there’s no comparison.

The Voice didn’t take hits this season, it was up most nights from season 2 (obviously the premiere and average were higher due to Super Bowl) But the finale of season 2 earned a 4.4 and the finale of season 3 earned a 4.9 and 3 million more viewers.

I wonder if Modern Family could go up tonight since there’s a baby being born tonight. Last year, Modern Family didn’t drop against the idol premiere.

More pointless stats? Bla bla bla… these people are nobodies.

Sorry, but 4 judges is just a mess. Look what happened in seasons 8 and 9. 3 does just fine.

Also, broader theme weeks should be used, like “Rolling Stone Magazine’s Finest,” “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Top 500,” “It Happened This Century,” “Jimmy Iovine’s Personal Favorites (Jimmy has more of an input here),” keep “Who’s Your Idol” and “From the Year You Were Born (catch is: it must be the original artist and the original song from that year or it will be discarded) and also, when it comes down to the final 3 or 4, since their music might be heard somewhere, have them perform original tunes wrote by themselves or fans. I would ask them, “If you become the next American Idol, what song would you expect radio stations to play?”

Four judges can work if the right chemistry is there. The first go around poor Kara Diguardi it was a bad idea for her to come in between Simon-Randy-Paula, as she took away from their chemistry and was so green. The second go around of Ellen-Randy-Simon-Kara pure disaster on top of a deadly dull season of contestants. In fact season 9 is the worst and I have noticed FOX acts like that season never existed nobody is ever even mentioned from that season. I think this four could have loads of chemistry. Its all in the talent. In season 10 when it got to live shows the judging was way too soft but what made up is that season had a massive cast of personalites. Pia, James, Haley, Scotty, Lauren were so known and talked about. Its Idol’s magic they have a connection to these contestants like no other show.

I’ll say 6.7 and I believe it will maintain consistency throughout the season. On Thursday night I can see high 4’s for the result show. It will get beaten by The Big Bang Theory but will win its second half hour against Two & A Half Men.

@ThatsRightISaidIt. Don’t make claims you can’t back up , you don’t make sense and just speaking from your opinion.

6.5…i think nicki minaj actually will chase some viewers away…
