With the fates of Leverage, Drop Dead Diva and Alphas all  finally decided (all three were cancelled) at least for a while we are out of "how come they haven't decided yet!?" territory.  So for a while I expect it will be comments and e-mails like "You've still got Suits as being in its second season, but it just came back!" and "%$*^ why is 'Sanctuary still on your list!" and "How dare BBC AMERICA claim Doctor Who as its own/how dare Syfy claim Continuum as its own!"

It's true shows like Bunheads and Suits are "back" after being off for a while, but they are back for continuations/conclusions of the same season (in the case of Bunheads, its first and in the case of Suits, its second).

Yep, Sanctuary is still on the list! I don't know how long it will be before a I delete it. I don't see the harm in more info, and since I'm the one maintaining the list... But spread the complaining love around please. Nobody ever complains "%$*^ why is Hung still on your list!" and it's been gone as long as Sanctuary.

BBC America and Syfy can claim those shows because they licensed the U.S. rights. This list focuses on networks in the United States because that's what makes the most sense for us, but we still love our UK and Canadian readers.

Changes This Week:

There were several season or series premieres this week and those shows have either been slightly updated or added to the list.

Notes:

  • Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
  • I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
  • Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately air in the states.
  • Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.
  • Yes, I know there will be a Doctor Who still has the remainder of season 7 to air and that there will be an anniversary episode, but as far as an 8th season goes, there's still no official announcement.

Last Updated January 22, 2013

Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

I was immediately struck by the similarity between Copper and Ripper Street. Both take place in the slums and feature cops with inner demons, 19th Century CSI types, ladies of ill repute in prominent supporting roles and a bevvy of sleazy criminals. There are a few distinctions between the programs but these don’t appear to make much of a difference.

Oh, god, second post ended up in the spam filter… What the hell did I say now?

Guys, a little help here! :-)

  • Brandy

I’m soo upset and Dissapointed Drop Dead Diva was cancelled, espcially since it ended on a huge cliffhanger. I figured it would get a final season to wrap things up, but the ratings did drop to 0.6 for a few episodes and Lifetime has a lot of pilots. Now I have to worry about Bunheads,Lying Game, maybe Switched at Birth.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

@RSH: not sure. Unfortunately I flushed the spam queue before checking. Apologies. Clearly it’s not you, but what you said ;-)

Not a good year for my TV shows they’re dropping like flies. So far Alphas, Leverage, Spartacus, Fringe, Last Resort, Flashpoint, and Merlin either ending or got cancelled. With Nikita and Hunted also not a sure thing for another season. Last season I really only lost Chuck although I did watch Awake, Terra Nova, TSC, and the River but they were not that important.

Hopefully new series The Americans, Ripper Street, Defiance, and the Following can stop the bleeding but it’s been a tough year for TV.

  • Alan

The only cable shows I watch are Pretty Little Liars and Cougar Town.

  • Neil

I’m still hung up about Hung.

  • Bill

Such a shame, I liked Alphas. I wonder why there’s no word on Beavis & Butt- Head yet.

  • Tessa

I had accepted the whole split season thing with White Collar and Suits, I knew that was the deal for USA shows. But when I started watching the newest season of The Walking Dead and realized it was split, that pissed me off. I watched the earlier seasons on DVD so I had no idea whether they were split or not, but this one made no sense whatsoever. They didn’t even end a side story. Just ended everything halfway hanging. It’s annoying enough when it happens to network TV shows at Christmas time, now we have to bear it with cable shows too.

  • THE OLD MAN

Didn’t watch any of them, so it doesn’t affect me in the least.

    Oh well, YAWN!

  • Jai

Just a point but Ripper Street is a BBC production, while Copper is a BBC America Production, the first one they have done without the BBC. As a Brit, we’ve not had Copper on TV over here, but Ripper street has been on last few weeks and I much preferred Copper, agree about the similarities though

OK, I’ll rewrite my mini-review of Banshee.

I just watched episode two of that show last night (haven’t seen episode one.) This series is by the creator of True Blood and it shows in the sex and violence. It’s a pretty good show. The premise is an ex-con assumes the identity of a sheriff in an Amish county. This sounds boring as hell, and I wasn’t interested at first. But I decided to take a shot and I’m glad I did. The show is well acted, has a fast pace, and is loaded with action and sex.

The lead actor reminds me of Scott Speedman, but he’s probably a better actor. The lead villain is excellent character actor Ulrich Thomsen. In this episode, he cut off a finger of one of his henchmen, fed it to his dog, told the guy the dog now “had a taste for him”, then gave him sixty seconds to run before sending the dog after him while he sat at a table eating steak. Nice guy. :-)

The female lead is Ivana Milicevic, who’s pretty hot. Turns out she is the sheriff’s ex-girlfriend who is now married with two kids. The sheriff wants her back, which is likely to prove problematic.

The sheriff has three main problems: 1) stay hidden from the shadowy gangsters he’s running from; 2) keep his deputies from finding out he’s not a cop; and 3) keep the local gangster and various local enemies he’s already made from killing him.

I saw an interview with the creators and they say they’re prepared to throw what would normally be season four stuff into season one, which indicates to me that they “get it”. So few producers do.

I recommend you check it out if you have Cinemax or can download the show online., I think you’ll like it if you like True Blood.

What the hell? THAT post ended up in the spam blocker.

Robert, what the hell is in that post to do that?

Will TVbytheNumbers have a new list soon of 2013 TV Premiere Dates?

Will TVbytheNumbers have a new list soon of 2013 TV Premiere Dates?

We didn’t do a winter premiere dates list and I don’t see us doing one at this point. If you want a combination of breadth & easy on the eyes, I recommend MetaCritic’s list:

@RSH: I freed that comment. I’m not honestly sure what triggered it. For all I know Bill added the word “sex” to the spam filter! Often, such brute force methods are extremely effective at getting rid of lots of stuff we really don’t want going on the site, but sometimes throw the babies out with the bathwater. Sorry.

Why is 1600penn Still on the bubble but Guys with kids is likely to be canceled?
    NBC should GWK another chance!!!

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

” For all I know Bill added the word “sex” to the spam filter!”

I don’t recall having done that, but that’s no indication either way!

I remember thatwhen syfy picked up Continuum they ought season 1 and also committed to season 2. So I dont think it matter how good or bad it does in the USa in sason 1 weather it airs season 2 or not. I am pretty sure the deal is done and it wiol get aired. It should however to ensure better ratings run at the same time as it does in Canada . the reason why is becuase it is so easy to watch it online after it airs up in canada, and if you already have seen it online why watch it on cable 6 months after it already aired in Canada ?

It is a great show, and I did watch it both online last summer and then again this past monday on SyFy and it definatly was a lot more enjoyable wacthing it in HD on televeision compared to watching it online.

It is a really good show and I think it was done very well for having a very low budget.

Season 2 should be much better in quality since they now have more than 1 net work paying the bill for producing it.

Robert and Bill: Let’s test the word “sex”!
