Predict the Ratings for the Premiere of 'The Following' - Poll

Tonight The Following, one of this season's most anticipated new shows, premieres on FOX. It has a lot going for it: an A-list cast (Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy) and showrunner (Kevin Williamson). On the other hand, the ratings for all of FOX's freshman series this season have been fairly dismal. The premise -- a serial killer with a cult of followers who will kill at his request -- may be too dark for broadcast television.  So how will it do? On Monday, January 17, 2012, the two hour premiere of Alcatraz garnered a 3.3 adults 18-49 rating, while The Following's immediate timeslot predecessor, The Mob Doctor premiered to a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating on September 17, 2012. Make your prediction below then explain your reasoning, and how many degrees of separation you are from Kevin Bacon, in the comment section.

I voted 2.5, they’ve been promoting it, but except during football/animation Fox’s ratings have been in the toilet so it’s not like a whole lot of people have been seeing them.

Be good if it failed as big as the Arnold movie did this weekend. Hollywood types call for gun control yet they won’t stop pumping out product full of guns and violence.

  • Matt

    3.2 and 10.5M

3.4 …i don’t think it will fall as far as alcatraz did…alcatraz had a really dumb premise…i think the following will stay above a 2.0 all season…

It’s buzzy, so it’ll premiere to a 3.2. It’ll drop a lot from episode 1 to 2, but will be steady between 2.0 and 2.5 for the rest of the season.

    The Bachelor: 2.0
    Castle: 1.8

    HIMYM: 3.5
    The Big Bang Theory: 3.6
    2 Broke Girls: 4.1
    Mike & Molly: 3.7
    Hawaii Five-0: 2.7

    The Carrie Diaries: 0.5
    90210: 0.3

    Bones: 2.2
    The Following: 3.2

    The Biggest Loser: 2.4
    Deception: 1.4

I have seen zero buzz on this show, 2.5, slightly better than last weeks Bones airing

I’m guessing somewhere around 3.3 though I hope it goes higher. There’s always a premiere bump to check out a new show before it drops. It definitely sounds like the type of show 24 fans will want to check out. It sounds very dark & violent that could turn some people off for network TV. Despite its violence as long as its well done with interesting characters it could have a nice long run at Fox. I understand Kevin Bacon will only do 15 episodes a season which should tighten the pace of this show.

  • Sam

I’ll be generous: 2.9 and it will get around 2.4 for the first half of the season. Then it should crash down to 1.9-2.1

It won’t get past season 1. Kevin bacon or not, this show is just another high budget failure. How much of those can Fox handle?

  • Michael

Why didn’t they premier this after a football game?

The Following has been promoted for months so it should have a fairly decent premiere but for some reason I don’t see it being this huge hit Fox is hoping for. I don’t think the ratings will be over a 3.0…my guess is mid to high 2′s.

The preview of the “making of The Following” only garnered a 0.6 Saturday night compared to a 5.2 for SNL on metered markets. Granted that’s not a typical indicator, but I don’t think this type of show is suited for Mondays. Most people want to have more mindless (not very dark) entertainment when they get home on the first day of the workweek.

  • THE OLD MAN

I’m thinking a pretty fair sampling should put it around a 3.0-3.1 share

  • Californiadgd

    3.0, 10 mln

  • Mike

Bones does around a 2.1 every week so my guess is The Following will do about the same 2.2-2.3!

  • Samunto

I think you’re all being too optimistic. The Lead-In Bones is very weak and the rest of FOX’s schedule is a mess. Even Idol had it’s lowest in-season debut.

    I say 2.3!
    Bones 2.0

  • Leondre

    3.5

  • BigBrotherFan

    BONES- 2.4
    FOLLOWING- 3.1

    The Biggest Loser- 2.5
    Deception- 1.7

    The Batch- 2.5
    castle- 2.0

    The Carrie Diaries- 0.4
    90210- 0.5

  • Samunto

    @DenverDean.
I agree with you a tiny bit.

Mondays have now been dominated by light fare with DWTS, The Voice and the CBS laffers. Good, we are not forgetting the hey days of 24, Heroes or House.
Yes, young males most certainly miss those days.

  • snoot

    2.0

    @Michael
Why didn’t they premier this after a football game?

Because their late playoff game was on 6 January, so they couldn’t do Sunday/Monday airings without going up against the BCS National Championship Game. (Also, that would be two more repeats later on.)

Premiering the day after the NFC Championship was their best bet.
