Predict the Ratings for the Premiere of 'The Following' - Poll

Tonight The Following, one of this season's most anticipated new shows, premieres on FOX. It has a lot going for it: an A-list cast (Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy) and showrunner (Kevin Williamson). On the other hand, the ratings for all of FOX's freshman series this season have been fairly dismal. The premise -- a serial killer with a cult of followers who will kill at his request -- may be too dark for broadcast television.  So how will it do? On Monday, January 17, 2012, the two hour premiere of Alcatraz garnered a 3.3 adults 18-49 rating, while The Following's immediate timeslot predecessor, The Mob Doctor premiered to a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating on September 17, 2012. Make your prediction below then explain your reasoning, and how many degrees of separation you are from Kevin Bacon, in the comment section.

    Three repeats, actually.

@DenverDean, its kind of stupid to assume that the rating for the making of the Following is an indicator considering it aired at midnight. That’s no indicator as to how the show will do tonight.

@Samunto, I think it will gain from the Bones lead-in.

The darkness of the show may be why they pushed DVR so much. Record it, then watch it when the kids are in bed.

Can’t really believe they’re jumping on the DVR numbers just yet.

  • CBSviewer

2.5 The Show looks good but I don’t want to be too optimistic.

FOX has been promoting the sh*t out of this. Similar promo to Terra Nova & X Factor(season 1). My guess will be 3.8, Bones has been doing solidly on Monday considering it has been getting .9 lead ins

I see my arch rival AppleStinx is scared to give his prediction.

Really sad that big names like Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy have to be part of a program like this. It’s just more US network TV murder porn. What you see will be graphic and sensational violence, but the language you hear will be limited to “shoot”, “darn”, and perhaps the very sneaky “bitch” should there be a catfight on the premises.

That said, it’ll have a big premiere. At least 2.5-3.0.

I once took picture with Joey Fatone who was in The Cooler with William H. Macy who was in Murder in the First with KEVIN BACON! It doesn’t matter how it will premiere. It will follow suit like The Chicago Code, Alcatraz, Mob Doctor, and other failed Monday shows.

  • Samunto

DenverDean wrote that it’s NOT a typical indicator. You clearly didn’t read that right. I think he was trying to note that there was no interest in the special.

@Ultima, i try to listen to you.

Kevin Bacon / Neve Campbell – wild things
Campbell / Sarah Michelle Gellar – scream 2
SMG / Selma Blair – cruel intentions
Selma Blair / Me – dark horse (I interned on it in 2010)

    Speaking of…

The extended FOX promo for all of their January programming where they played the Kevin Bacon game with all of their shows was awesome. :)

I’m hoping it does well and these comments aren’t giving me too much hope. How I miss the days of House, 24, and Heroes..these singing competitions have had their runs, they aren’t even really bringing in stellar ratings anymore. It’s time for good scripted shows to take over again.

  • Joe

For those comparing this to Touch and Alcatraz, you’re using shows that really aren’t fair comparisons, because frankly despite those shows getting good initial ratings because of their stars or show runners, Kiefer in Touch, or JJ Abrams and Sam Neill for Alcatraz, what ultimately made those shows dip was the underwhelming storylines/plots so yes this show will probably premiere REALLY big, and it will naturally fall off as all shows do, but how dramatically it falls off will be dictated on it’s quality, which we all have to wait and see to determine that.

I agree, I don’t think you can compare this show with Touch and Alcatraz. Nielsen Families never really like Sci-fi shows like that. This has suspense and mystery which usually does better with the Nielsen families.

  • AppleStinx

I think that James Purefoy has a following of his own.

  • Jonathan

I couldn’t resist finding out how many idots would attempt to make predictions about something they know nothing about.

  • baja7475

Jonathan, I would think a smarter person like yourself would know how to spell or proof-read.

  • Sunny

I expect similar ratings to Alcatraz and then a significant drop when The Voice comes back in March

  • Tested

2.4-2.5 for this show. Fox is promoting DVR use for this show and I think that will hurt the overnight ratings.

  • JulieDawn

I say 2.9 for the premiere. I am looking forward to checking it out, but I will be DVRing and probably not watching until tomorrow, as my Monday is already overflowing with other things I watch.

However I’m in Canada and therefore obviously not a Nielsen family either, so I don’t count!!!
