Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 20, 2013):

After two episodes in 2013, Nashville has elevated its relative ratings enough to move its status from "likely" to "certain to be renewed". If the ratings plunge in the Spring, the prediction will change, but at this point, expect to see it on the schedule next season.

Those calling for blood after Revenge's 1.7 rating on Sunday night should calm themselves. One night is effectively irrelevant to the future of the show. As always, if the ratings continue their slide, so will its predicted status.

Fans of Don't Trust the B---- In Apt. 23, when a show is pulled off the schedule with no return date, it's been canceled. Only the delusional need more "confirmation" than that.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

so sad about Don’t Trust the B. what a great show.

  • Dinaminjo

    Nashville’s got talent!!

A possible Fall 2013 ABC schedule could be…

    The Middle
    DWTS Results

    Modern Family
    *New Comedy*
    *New Drama*

    Grey’s Anatomy
    *New Drama*

    Last Man Standing
    Malibu Country
    Shark Tank

    Once Upon a Time
    *New Drama*

  • Al

Nashville now is best drama on ABC and network television. Not cop-show and not bad soap like Renenge. Quality scripts.

  • Common Anomaly

With ABC finally picking up additional pilots yesterday, the only one clearly on the path to being picked up to series is Josh Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. If you would be interested in watching it, where would you prefer to see ABC schedule it (you can also answer, “Midseason after football ends since that would open up Sunday, Monday, and Thursday”)?

  • ethan

so, how are shows like nashville, revenge, and scandal effected if both red widow and zero hour become hits…if abc wants both of them on their fall schedule, might they need to cancel one of these?

  • Dinaminjo

I would not be surprised if Castle got the Sunday 10pm slot..

  • BigBrotherFan

Nashville is such a well written well acted show. I really hope ABC does right by them and gives it a second season. It’s such a great show and they could pick up some major awards next season if they keep it up and the ratings could boost. They need to know what a winner they have in this show.

They are making smart decisions with SCANDAL and really stupid ones with REVENGE. They need to go straight to KELLY and retool the complete MESS he has created this season THANKS TO AIDEN! The writing is all over the place here and it’s impossible to keep up with all the plots. I have never seen a show that featured an entire cast of sociopathetic characters in MY LIFE (NOT EVEN OZ!)! not EVERYONE needs to have secret motives. It’s was totally campy with PADMA and I rolled my eyes seeing that coming. Ratings will go down to mid 1’s if ABC doesn’t force KELLY to make some much needed changes.

As for the rest. This network is a major screw up. Welcome to the world of NBC.

“so, how are shows like nashville, revenge, and scandal effected if both red widow and zero hour become hits…if abc wants both of them on their fall schedule, might they need to cancel one of these?”

As always, room will need to be made for successful spring shows (however rare they may be).

But until they premiere and we see the ratings, I don’t make any predictions.

  • David Howell

Castle would be probably first to go there, it’s closer to the bear. They might hold something back for midseason too.

Zero Hour is DOA in that time slot anyway, I’m waiting for the jokes when it gets a 0.9 in the demo.

  • Lifey

“Nashville” should be paired with “Venice” , Next season. It’s a new Drama Pilot.

  • Keith

Horrible and unrealistic schedule. You have ABC moving 8 shows into different time-slots and/or days. That would never happen!

I don’t get why a lot of people think that Grey’s should get the death slot on Thursdays just to move Scandal in Grey’s spot. Grey’s is still their number #1 drama, why would they kill it? I think they should keep Grey’s and Scandal in the same spots and if Scandal is still a hit next year, then they should move it to a different timeslot/day (especially if Grey’s does not come back after next season).

  • Sel

So sad to see ABC’s best comedies on the bottom ;{ RIP Apartmen 23 & Happy Endings. You’ll be missed!

  • The End

On the bright side, none of these fantasy schedules will come to anything anyway. No need to assign logic to any of them.

  • Al

@Lifey good idea. Venice is sounds like original Dallas and maybe will attract a wide audience if cast and scripts will well.

  • Brandy

So glad Nashville is certain to be renewed! It and Once are all I watch on abc.

  • sofaspud

Agree with Sel. I weep for humanity that The Neighbors is facing renewal while Happy Endings is facing cancelation. Haven’t bothered with either Last Man Standing or Malibu-whatever but I imagine those shows are thriving only for who stars in them.

  • Bee

the neighbors is just lucky for getting that slot. man, i wish happy endings was airing part of the wednesday line-up.

YAY NASHVILLE! hope the positive ratings and quality trends continue.

  • Match

This schedule is not realistic but this is what i would do, to me it looks nice.

    08:00 Once Upon a Time
    09:00 Tomorrow (new)
10:00 Betrayal (new) / Venice (new)

    08:00 S.H.I.E.L.D (new)
    09:00 The Returned (new)
    10:00 Castle

    08:00 Bastards (new)
    09:00 Grey’s Anatomy
    10:00 Nashville

    08:00 The Middle
    08:30 Suburgatory
    09:00 Modern Family
09:30 How to Live with Your Parents / Now What?
    10:00 Revenge

    08:00 Dancing With The Stars
    10:00 Scandal

08:00 Dancing With The Stars (results)
    09:00 Shark Tank
    10:00 20/20

Mixology, Trophy wife and Pulling sound nice, no idea where to put them.

I am really going to miss HAPPY ENDINGS. It has never received the attention it deserved and has been very mistreated by ABC from the start. Then again, I don’t think ABC expected it to last beyond the first season…at least they got 3 out of it…but not enough for syndication. I am hoping for a last minute reprieve!
