After two new episodes in 2013, Elementary's relative ratings have picked up to the point where it's now certain to be renewed. If its ratings plunge later in the season, the prediction will be adjusted, but expect to see it on CBS' schedule next season.
Note to the nitpicky commenters, although its just about as certain as it gets, How I Met Your Mother has not yet been officially renewed.
Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.
** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old" Fall predictions in the table.
Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2013
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Bill Gorman who said:
However, networks typically makes far fewer changes than many of our commenters predict/hope/fear.
I must respectfully disagree with what you are saying. If you were say CBS makes……’far fewer changes than many of our commenters predict/hope/fear’ i will agree. But ‘Networks’ which include NBC, abc and fox… really? NBC this year premiere so many new shows and especially sitcoms. They change so many times their friday schedule. fox experiments with their tuesday comedy block, fridays etc. abc tuesday sitcoms. CBS is the only conservative and stable network(may be because are number one at the moment) all others are a litle or big mess.
@9:00 – NEW DRAMA

Illinois, my friend, CBS will never premier new show and one more new show after. They always support their new shows.

Me thinks 0.87 is a little low to be declaring Elementary certain to be renewed.
A 0.51 for Blue Bloods. What does it mean ?
@ Petar Ivanov
CBS premiered two new Shows on Tuesday in 2010 and both were hits.
A litle help for all people with their fantasy schedules:
1 CBS always premiere new sitcom on Monday at 8:30.
2 CBS always premiere new drama on tuesday at 10.
3 CBS always premiere new drama in friday at 9.
4 And expect CBS to premiere one more new drama on thursday at 10 for post POI slot wich next season will be better than NCIS lead-out.
And IF Ncis spinoff is really good can take post NCIS slot and ncis la to be at 10. But this is big if.
@Drew
Why won’t you mark HIMYM as renewed when it’s basically a done deal but hasn’t been officially announced, but you are willing to mark a series as canceled when it’s basically a done deal but before it’s officially announced? Seems like you’re having it both ways.
Can you think of any show in recent memory that was declared canceled that ended up being on the schedule at May upfronts? I can’t. (Note that this necessarily excludes shows that were officially canceled and then picked back up later).
However, I can think of a rather famous basically done deal that ended up not happening… Law & Order season 21.
@Drew
Also, while renewals are always officially announced, cancellations are usually not and are simply confirmed by the lack of a renewal.
@Come on CBS just renew TGW for a final season.
Dont worry. They need 100 ep. They will renew it. But will be on friday.(but who cares honestly. TGW fans will be happy)
@Petar
1 CBS always premiere new sitcom on Monday at 8:30.
Except in 2010, when they premiered Mike & Molly at 9:30 after three veteran shows.
2 CBS always premiere new drama on tuesday at 10.
Except in 2008, when the new drama was at 9pm and they had a veteran show at 10pm.
3 CBS always premiere new drama in friday at 9.
Except in 2010, when they premiered a new drama at 10pm and 2011 when they premiered a new drama at 8pm.
4 And expect CBS to premiere one more new drama on thursday at 10 for post POI slot wich next season will be better than NCIS lead-out.
Is the 2.19 the highest number any show has had in any index since it was introduced? It sure feels like it and I’ve been reading almost since the first one.
As for the schedules, I just don’t see CBS ever airing NCIS, NCIS LA and another NCIS spinoff on the same night. If they didn’t do it with NY, Miami and the original CSI why start now? I suppose it is possible they did it once with the CSI’s but I don’t recall it and highly doubt it.
@A 0.51 for Blue Bloods. What does it mean ?
It means that is lock for renewel and for syndication. Don’t worry be happy.
@CBS premiered two new Shows on Tuesday in 2010 and both were hits.
Don’t remmeber that but still these days is hard to belive that they will try that way. New shows now collapse much easier and lose fans too fast without support. Although this sesson NCIS is sti, their number 1 drama lead-out hard to belive that option.
@Mon.
I didn’t talk about the football rating though. I said – and rightly – that HFO is performing as well as Elementary and CSI – after the first few weeks of shaky numbers.
If you think HFO should be moved due to poor performance then you have to think the same about Elementary and CSI. Or you’re being irrational. But then you often are
As for @Petar. Yes POI will beat NCIS, be a better lead in than even Big Bang Theory and probably bag an Oscar too!
@Ultima
In Europe we say this way:
“exceptions prove the rule”
ps. Do ypu want to make a bet that next season POI will beat NCIS in demo(not viewers)?
For me is easy math look at this season – NCIS drop and POI Uptrend. Make the same math for next season and you will see that i am right. Even think Eridapo make the math before weeks.
H50 will absolutely be moved next season, but not for poor performance. It’ll just be moved to debut a new drama. Probably to either Tuesday at 10 or Friday at 9.
@Petar,
How would the bet work? Would it be season averages? Or would it count if in any given week PoI beat NCIS? Or comparing NCIS’s lowest rated episode to PoI’s highest rated episode? Or highest rated to highest rated?
@As for @Petar. Yes POI will beat NCIS, be a better lead in than even Big Bang Theory and probably bag an Oscar too!
Man some people will look so funny next season.
In the end of THIS season margin between NCIS and POI will be small.May be NCIS will be around 3.3-3.4(if the voice return ans spring don’t lower ir) and POI will be 3.0 wich is 0.3-0.4 margin. With 0.2-0.3 NCIS drop and 0.1-0.2 POI UP. Make the math for next season. Be happy and watch your favoritte show h5o. And don’t comment other fans shows ay you don;t want they to comment yours.
@Holly
Well in my math. Simple math Holly. I explain it what my opinion is before read your opinion.
@H50 will absolutely be moved next season, but not for poor performance. It’ll just be moved to debut a new drama. Probably to either Tuesday at 10 or Friday at 9.
CBS has where to performe new drama thursday at 10 after POI. Its their best slot for new drama. And tuesday at 10. H5o is working good at Mondays at 10 and will stay there.
@Petar,
That didn’t answer my question at all.
