After two new episodes in 2013, Elementary's relative ratings have picked up to the point where it's now certain to be renewed. If its ratings plunge later in the season, the prediction will be adjusted, but expect to see it on CBS' schedule next season.

Note to the nitpicky commenters, although its just about as certain as it gets, How I Met Your Mother has not yet been officially renewed.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Holly
    I will give you example for my math : you can see the margin between POI and other 9 pm cbs dramas last season and this season.

  • Ultima

    @Casey
    Is the 2.19 the highest number any show has had in any index since it was introduced? It sure feels like it and I’ve been reading almost since the first one.

    No, Modern Family is at 2.32 over on the ABC index!

    Also, The Office used to have ridiculous index values back when pulled 4.0+ demos.

  • Petar Ivanov

    @Mon
    I think we all agree that CSI is best 10 pm CBS show. Even veteran show but still good. After on par are H5O and Elementary. After that is TM. and than is Vegas. Monday is second best CBS day for CBS after thursdays. I think they will try to make their bad days better like Sunday and Friday and Tuesday at 10. The big question is will they move survivor at sunday. If CBS do that we will see a lot of changes.

  • Holly

    @Petar,

    Still not answering the question at all.

    Let’s try this.

    Are you saying you want to make a bet that PoI’s season average will be higher than NCIS’s season average? Or do you want to make a bet that in any week next season PoI’s individual episode will be higher than NCIS’s individual episode that same week?

  • Ultima

    @Petar

    In Europe we say this way:
    “exceptions prove the rule”

    We say that here, too. And I’m sure that just like in America, most people over there have absolutely no clue what the phrase means. Hint – you’re not using it correctly.

    “Parking prohibited on Sundays” is an exception that proves the rule (in this case, you’re allowed to park there the other six days).

    @Ultima
    What was 2BG index last year@

    I think Two and a Half Men’s 2.72 is probably the highest index ever. :)

  • Ultima

    @Holly

    Since the PoI vs NCIS thing started with which would be a better lead-in, presumably it would have to be season averages.

  • v

    I still say TheGoodWife gets 12 episode or whatever it needs to get to 100, like Fringe did.

  • Ultima

    @Petar

    We don’t really need to bet. I will spend between now and then mocking your PoI fanaticism and if you end up being right, I’m a big enough man to eat crow for it. :)

  • Mon

    I agree. Renew The Good Wife for only 12 episodes to reach 100 and done. It would be a waste if CSI: NY or The Mentalist has to die for this ratings trainwreck.

  • Petar Ivanov

    @Holly
    Ok. sorry now i get it.
    @Are you saying you want to make a bet that PoI’s season average will be higher than NCIS’s season average?

    Based on my math, yep that is what i am ready to bet. On 18-49 demo or C3, not viewers. NCIS will get more viewers is older show that is clear.

    @Or do you want to make a bet that in any week next season PoI’s individual episode will be higher than NCIS’s individual episode that same week?

    Nope. I can’t bet for that.

    If you take the bet and you win you will give me a name(not Petar Ivanov) let’s say ‘the fool’ for one season on this site – although you are not rude/bad and i am sure won’t choose that name.(you are not so sarcastic as Ultima is) And if i win i will give you a name for 1 season in this site. I am good guy and will give you great name. May be Lost name or POI name. May be POI dog name. Its so cute. Will be funny.

    Deal or not deal?

  • Petar Ivanov

    @Ultima
    I will make a bet with holly. You are too rude and angry. Think need more happines. Hope i am not right.

    @Mon who said:

    I AGREE!!! THis is best option and WIN-WIN for everybody fans and CBS. TGW will get final season mat be more than 13 ep. I guess 15 or 17 like CSi Miami. And than TM or CSI NY for final season.

  • Illinois

    @ Petar

    Sorry, CBS premiered two new dramas on Tuesday at 9 and 10 in 2009.

    For 11 years, CBS airs “Sunny dramas” on Monday at 10 (CSI: Miami and now Hawaii Five-0). Considering Hawaii Five-0 is falling, NCIS: Los Angeles seems to be the prefect candidate to replace it.

  • SJ

    When Golden Boy inevitably flops, CBS will realize what they have with CSI: NY and maybe they’ll give it a full season next year. That will likely be its last, though don’t look for CBS to announce that publicly.

    As for The Good Wife, it also has one more full season left in it. Undercover Boss will certainly be pushed to mid-season again and Vegas is a goner. That only leaves one more cancellation, which has got to be The Mentalist. The show’s low-rated, old, expensive, hasn’t benefited from syndication (which CBS doesn’t even see a penny from, by the way)… It’s going to be a Cold Case/Without a Trace-like cancellation. Some will be surprised, but everybody should have seen it coming from a mile away.

  • Petar Ivanov

    ps and that means that cbs won’t cancel TM, CSI NY or TGW this season. Two will get series ending next season.

    But why they will move H5o is working for them fine. What don’t work for CBS is their sundays, tuesday at 10 and may be wednesday at 8 can be change. For me moving h5o doesn’t make sense. Not before CBS to rebuild what don’t work. Its like to move CSI. They cam move Elementary so new drama to get post POI slot.

  • Ultima

    @Petar
    You are too rude and angry.

    :(

    I’m not angry (only on the Sunday finals thread!).

    Fine, I’ll nicely point out that NCIS is crushig PoI! ;)

  • Petar Ivanov

    @Ultima

    That is what i am talking about. Waaaaaaay too much anger even HATE Ultima. Ok, support your show but why this hate. And think. If CBS #1 drama is ‘crushig’ CBS #2 drama this season what to say for CBS #3 drama #4 etc. abd all other shows. Not to mention 0.4 margin is now. Lower the anger try to be happy enjoy the life more.

  • Illinois

    @ Bill

    CSI: NY is likely to be canceled only because it’ll have an early Finale ? It got a 2.1 with the Live+3 for its Friday episode !
