After two new episodes in 2013, Elementary's relative ratings have picked up to the point where it's now certain to be renewed. If its ratings plunge later in the season, the prediction will be adjusted, but expect to see it on CBS' schedule next season.

Note to the nitpicky commenters, although its just about as certain as it gets, How I Met Your Mother has not yet been officially renewed.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I didn’t say a Show with a funny locale would do better on Monday. I just said a Show like Hawaii Five-0 is more compatible with the Comedy block than a dark drama like CSI or Criminal Minds.

  • Faith

@Jake Check the renewal index Good Wife .65 H50 1.03. Better check your facts. Hawaii 50 does not have the worst not (worse) ratings for a 10:00 show. The numbers are here daily, I don’t make them up. Sorry but #H50 will be on for a few more years because like it or not it is a money maker.

  • Bill Gorman

    “@Bill Gorman
My prediction is that Vegas will see a ratings uptick with parenthood and private practice out of the way. Would that be enough to save the show?”

A 2.3 gets it renewed today. If the other CBS shows ratings drift down, that 2.3 target could be a lower by the end of the season.

Vegas got above a 2.0 rating its premiere episode only. It’s going to take a ratings turnaround miracle at this point to get it to a 2.3.

“Blue Bloods” is the Night’s Top Gainer, Adding +2.38 Million Viewers to Cross the 14 Million Mark

All three of CBS’s Friday night series delivered more than 10 million viewers led by BLUE BLOODS, the night’s top gainer, which added +2.38 million viewers to 14 million, according to Nielsen live plus three day lift for Jan. 18.

UNDERCOVER BOSS added +886,000 viewers (10.33m from 9.45m), +0.4 rating points in adults 25-54 (3.2 from 2.8) and +0.3 in adults 18-49 (2.2 from 1.9) live plus three day lift from live plus same day.

CSI: NY added +1.71m viewers (12.39m from 10.68m), +0.6 rating points in adults 25-54 (3.1 from 2.5) and +0.5 in adults 18-49 (2.1 from 1.6) live plus three day lift from live plus same day.

BLUE BLOODS added +2.38m viewers (14.03m from 11.65m), +0.6 rating points in adults 25-54 (3.1 from 2.5) and +0.4 in adults 18-49 (1.9 from 1.5) live plus three day lift from live plus same day.

@Petar. I wasn’t dissing your show, just sometimes your POI love amuses me. It’s just sooo epic. Not in a bad way though – like One’s Last Resort posts, they cheer up my TVBTN’s viewing. :)

  • Charles

    @bill Gorman
    Thanks for the reply
Also, if Vegas were to start getting bigger dvr gains, could that give the show more of a chance?

  • JacobYates

Why is CBS not airing any new shows this week?

  • Joe

So many schedules….unrealistic schedules that is…

CBS only makes major moves when an established show is showing signs of weakness or they dont own it….and syndication plays a role as well. H5O while not dominant has a fat syndication deal and a solid lead-in….CBS won’t move this show

If Golden Boy hits than expect it to return on Tesdays at 10pm

    Criminal Minds

Steady night…no reason to change it

    2.5 Men

Comedy expansion is the destiny of this night for CBS, with no other established comedy at 9pm CBS has no choice but to expand their dominance

    (New Reality)
    The Good Wife (Final Season)
    Blue Bloods

    The Mentalist

    Rules of Engagement
    Undercover Boss
    NCIS spin-off

I truly enjoy Elementary, its one of the handful of shows I can stomach on TV right now, sadly I have a life that doesnt revolve around networks and shows. Really glad to see it have a chance for season 2 though.

  • Petar Ivanov

    Don’t belive it.

I think we are fine. You are nice guy.

I don’t think that CSI is so dark. CM is most dark show on the air. And with mass killings in USA take a lot of blame from critics.

  • Ultima

Hawaii 5-0, it’s ratings are the worse for a CBS drama this season.

Nonsense. Hawaii Five-0 is averaging a 2.3 rating this season, ahead of Vegas, The Mentalist and The Good Wife.

And then there’s The Good Wife. Ratings for the Good Wife have not been quite as bad as Hawaii 5-0 but bad enough.

Again, nonsense. I don’t even know how you could possibly think that.

If the big shot executives at CBS has any ounce of brain in their heads those are the 3 dramas to cancel.

WHY would CBS want to cancel three veteran dramas? Please explain what you think should replace them on the schedule next year.

  • Ultima

    Does it true ?

The cast and producers have extended their contracts with FOX. The show has yet to be officially renewed by CBS.

  • Ultima

    @Jacob Yates
Why is CBS not airing any new shows this week?

35+ week season, 22-24 episodes per show.

For most of its shows, CBS is airing two episodes in January and then four new episodes during February sweeps.

  • ateofi

I enjoy Elementary but the ratings have not been spectacular, especially considering the whole thursday evening schedule starting with huge hit TBBT.

  • Andy

    I love TGW!!!

  • DJ

@Ultima or anybody who can answer
    1) So then if Undercover Boss is renewed for the exact same spot for next year(November-May) does that mean that CBS would have to cancel two out of CSI NY Mentalist and Good Wife? Also, I notice it’s not under the list of shows with an index, but does anybody know the relative odds of Undercover Boss being renewed or cancelled for next season?
    2) If The Job is renewed, that would mean that two out of CSI NY, Mentalist and Good Wife would have to be cancelled next year, correct?

  • Holly

If CBS wants to air Undercover Boss in the fall then, yes, they will need to cancel another show. But that wasn’t really the plan this year. It was being held as filler when a show failed. It seems likely that will happen again.

Both Undercover Boss and the Job can easily be renewed and aired as fillers either during the winter break in lieu of reruns or to replace a failed show. Their renewal doesn’t necessarily mean anything for the chances of the dramas.

  • Michael

Come on renew CSI:NY for 1 more season. I mean CSI:Miami got canceled on its tenth, and I think CSI:NY should get canceled on its tenth.

  • K

This is just a formality, Elementary is a lock to be renewed. CBS would be very dumb to break up a block of shows (TBBT, THM, POI, Elementary), that practically rules Thurs night.
