Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 20, 2013):

The first two episodes of The Carrie Diaries produced ratings of 0.6 and 0.5 with adults 18-49 (although the second episode's ratings are not yet in the calculations above). That'll keep it in the "toss up" range for at least a week. Any more declines and it's going to be dinner for the Cancellation Bear.

How can Nikita with the lowest ratings on the network be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

-
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • Bob

I like 90210 a lot and hope it gets a full season next season even if it might be the last.

  • Jared

I’ve been a fan of 90210 from the beginning and even I don’t necessarily need a final season. The last 10 episodes of this season are more than enough to wrap up any storylines(which currently there isn’t very much to wrap up). Its time to just let it go..5 seasons was a great run.

As far as the Carrie Diaries go unless the CW is really rallying behind this show and believes it has potential or could possibly relaunch it in the Fall the ratings aren’t doing much of anything to warrant a renewal.

    Renewed
    The Vampire Diaries
    Arrow
    Supernatural
    Hart of Dixie
    Nikita
    Beauty & the Beast

    Cancelled
    Emily Owens MD.
    The Carrie Diaries
    90210
    Cult

  • Alan

There’s no way 90210 is getting cancelled. If the CW would have decided that, the announcement would be told by this days. Currently they are shooting episodes 20-21, so there’s no time to wrap things up anymore. 90210 is getting a final season, The Carrie Diaries probably renewed for another 13 episodes, Beauty and the Beast cancelled, Nikita moving to summer and the rest is renewed for fall.

  • JoJo

    @Alan
The CW wouldn’t renew The Carrie Diaries for just 13 episodes. Either it gets picked up for a full season of 22 episodes to air in the Fall or the network will just cancel it altogether.

  • John A

Plenty of 1st yr shows that have Bubble ratings that get renewed for 2nd season get 13 ep renewels. So TCD might get that to see it might grow. Cw renewed Life Unexpected for 2nd season of 13 episodes.

As I say every week when people start posting their fantasy CW schedule for next season, “WTH are you thinking”…. Putting HOD as a leadin, moving Supernatural back to Fridays, 90210 not only getting a final season but some of you putting it as a leadin… Do you not look at the Same results I do when the daily ratings are released? I mean, Not everyone would agree with my schedule but never in a million years would I do any of the things mentioned above! With this said, here is my “fantasy” CW Schedule so someone else can complain about mine…

Mondays 8 The Originals 9 New Series

Tuesdays 8 New Series 9 SUPERNATURAL

Wednesdays 8 Arrow 9 New Series

Thursdays 8 The Vampire Diaries 9 CULT

Fridays 8 Hart of Dixie 9 NIKITA

VD was a hit when being a leadin show and self starter, so why not try this method again with the VD spioff on another night. Also Tuesday should be revamped and SPN proved to be a success with Arrow as a leadin so why not try this method on one of the worst performing nights. VD has a hard time with new shows following, so why not place cult behind it, that is IF the show is a modest hit for this spring season..

  • Wright

Life Unexpected was a good show TCD isn’t.

  • Glover

The CW should move Beauty to Fridays at 9 and put Cult after The Vampire Diaries and air repeats of Carrie Diaries after Hart of Dixie. Cult is already dead and Carrie is not doing great, they have to try something to give these two a chance.

It’s sad to the CW returning next season with dead walking shows like 90210, Hart of Dixie and Nikita.

  • JoJo

The CW now officially picked up The Selection..The Originals and a Navy/Military drama called Company Town. I feel like next season the network is moving away from the teen dramas its been known for and moving into a Sci Fi..fantasy with a focus on male viewers.

  • feinn

Cw has picked up nothing, only ordered pilots

  • Brandy

Chris, you’re crazy if you dont know that Originals spinoff is going behind VD, rather than trying yet again to find a new show to keep VDs audience when Original would.Cult will also not air behind VD this season or next as next season, The Originals is getting the coveted post VD slot. Also, why move HoD to fri when it’s stable against the Voice,Dancing with the Stars and NCIS?
Glover, they’re not gonna move Beauty to fri, especially during its first season and let it die. They didn’t move any other underperforming freshman show to fri, so why start now?.Cult will not be moved to after VD, it’s been given its timeslots and there it will stay, especially as its only going to be 13 episodes so deal with it.

  • Mae

I just do not see 90210 coming back. I do not see it as a show that deserves a final season. 5 years is not that long, and I do not believe it made the impact (or had the buzz) that other shows who got finals seasons had.

Gossip Girl got one as it was the CW’s “flagship” show. Smallville went 10 seasons & OTH 9 – both long-running.

90210′s ratings will not improve, only go do. Does the CW really want to a final season that is pulling 0.3-0.4′s?

TVD, Arrow, Supernatural, & Nikita will be renewed. HoD only if it can keep pulling 0.7′s. BatB, Carrie Diaries will be gone.

  • JJA

I think HOD is now a sure bet for renewal. Not so much because it had one good night, but rather because 90210 and Carrie Diaries are faltering.

Beauty & The Beast is still a certain cancelation.

Also, if picked up, this Company Town sounds like it can go well with Hart of Dixie on Tuesdays.

Looking forward to Nikita season 4. By the way, notice how Nikita’s ratings don’t seem so bad anymore? With 90210 at .4 and Carrie Diaries at .5, Nikita’s .4 on Friday is almost respectable.

  • Dan

Hart of Dixie will be renewed…if Nikita can be renewed the last few years with worse ratings, I think HOD can too. Beauty and the Beast and The Carrie Diaries will more than likely be canceled along with a final 10-13 episode final season for 90210.

  • chris23

Hey Brandy what concept do you not get about “fantasy schedules”. This is all for fun. So suck on that and you deal with it.

Also you think HOD is stable against a much weakened DWTS, a much weaker fox comedy lineup, and an even worse ABC lineup? Your insane in the membrane girl… The only real great competitor on Tuesdays is CBS with the massive viewers NCIS gets and the 18/49 ratio to total viewers really doesn’t effect hod audience..

I’m sorry if you disagree, Your opinion is yours and mine is mine and just learn to deal.. Me personally, HOD is a wasted leadin and is not performing great on Tuesdays at 8.. Atleast put HOD at a 9 slot and give other stronger shows a 8 PM leadin.. HOD has proved not to be leadin worthy. However it did prove it could grow out of a pathetic leadin (gossip girl) during season which was an impressive feat considering all the other freshman series (Ringer had the most buzz and Secret Circle had the great VD leadin).

Does HOD have a good loyal audience? Yes… Does HOD outperform gossip girl, 90210,and occasionally beauty and the beast….. Answer is also yes.. Do I think HOD is renewal worthy?? YES…. But not at 8 PM. in your world Hart of Dixie is a great performer but in a CW world HOD is only good because it doesn’t hit the lows of other shows that have overstayed their welcome.. I put Hod on Fridays it should get the Nikita treatment and give fans 4 seasons and try to make it into syndication.. I don’t think Cw should put repeats or supernatural on Fridays..

Yeah I’m sure CW will also put Originals behind VD but I think The originals has the best chance to be a Self Starting show and therfore why not try and take a chance the CW is sure running out of them.. Tuesdyas and Mondays need the most work.. Thursdays at 9 are also a problem but IMHO I think Mondays and Tuesdays need to get out of the major slump and gutter it fell into many years ago!!!

Brandy I’m very interested in what your schedule would be :)

  • chris23

@ Glover I agree that it is sad and pathetic that if 90210 were renewed and returning to the season whether full or 10-13 episodes. Cw should just give the show a head up and let it finish out the series now while they still have time.. Or give it a courtesy episode or two if that is even possible, like WB did with Felicity.

I’m also sad to see Cult placed on Tuesdays at 9, BATB is not gaining any traction why not take a chance putting it behind VD and moving BATB on Tuesdays at 9.

Alot of others might think that this is all crazy moving around shows or what not but what the hell else is working for this failing network? Nothing.. Unfortunately the CW has a reputation it doesn’t fully deserve.. it can still redeem itself (its already started with VD, Arrow) it just needs to take the trash out which that has started as well..

  • Chelle

Cancel: 90210 and The Carrie Diaries
Monday nights are not the same for The CW, I guess nobody likes high school/college shows anymore.

I think it’s a bit pointless coming up with schedules for next year because we’re not even sure what’s renewed and what’s going to get picked up. To the ‘CBSviewer’s schedule, I doubt the CW is going to put repeats in one of the timeslots.

What I’m hoping for is Nikita to get out of friday nights, and perhaps put on mondays (should the CW get rid of the teen dramas). I think a good pairing for friday nights would be BATB (if it gets renewed) followed by SPN since SPN has done well on friday nights.

  • gerry

cult should have been placed after the vamp diaries. or carrie diaries though cult obviously would mesh better. put your show with the most potential after your strongest show. move beauty and the beast and see if the audience will follow. if not, there’s the answer.

and get rid of 90210. midseason replacements rarely gain enough of an audience to stay on the air. cw isn’t doing themselves any favors by running that awful show for another half season when they have plenty of time now to wrap it. even if they order a few extra eps to wrap moving into summer, wouldn’t that be better than tying up the fall lineup?

  • Imanol

I LOVE THE CARRIE DIARIES IT´S THE BEST SHOW EVER ON THE CW, SO MUCH BETTER THAN HOD, NIKITA AND EMILY OWENS
