The first two episodes of The Carrie Diaries produced ratings of 0.6 and 0.5 with adults 18-49 (although the second episode's ratings are not yet in the calculations above). That'll keep it in the "toss up" range for at least a week. Any more declines and it's going to be dinner for the Cancellation Bear.

How can Nikita with the lowest ratings on the network be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Is the next episode of HoD the season finale? Sorry if this has already been covered in a previous post.

  • nicole

The CW Network should innovate with quality shows and canceling all the shows that do not reach the rating of 1.0. Beauty and the Beast is a show with bad actors bad acting.

  • elida17

certain to be renewed by May, 2012???? 2O13…

  • Anon

    @ sheimtun

12 of 22 episodes of HoD have been aired this season.

  • alexjones

    @jared
bit early to be declaring cult cancelled yet isn’t it?
it hasn’t even aired 1 episode!

  • Tom

sheimtun Two more episodes of HOD to go. January 29 and February 5.

  • Tom

Whoops. Messed up. Anon is correct. Sorry.

  • Dan

90210 is over. It has bad ratings, everyone (even fans) make fun of it and nobody really wants to see another season. Still, I’m sure we will get a short final season to squeeze as many episodes out of it as they can.
It makes sense to renew it. The actors are under contract, the show has already been sold overseas, The CW will not really have to worry about promotion or supervising storylines. It is already a well-oiled machine that runs on its own and I’m sure they can cut the budget even further.

If it was still a much-loved but low-rated show, The CW might have decided to let it go with dignity. But 90210 is a mess so they will milk it for all that it’s worth and leave it a rotten corpse. However, it is the writers that really sealed its fate with bad writing.

  • Michael Myers

Why do they say The Selection is like Hunger Games. It is more like The Bachelor this show has nothing in common with The Hunger Games.

  • angel

how about renewing the secret circle

  • Angellica .T.

    renew the secret citclr please

  • Guest

I was a huge 90210 fan, I still watch just because I’m a loyal fan and I can’t stop watching cause I have been watching since day one. I gotta say tho the show is a Joke and a it just plain sucks now! Seasons 1-3 were Awesome and I just couldn’t wait for next weeks episode, ever since they change show runners in season 4 the show has gone Downhill! I don’t even consider it a teen Drama at this point but a comedy! The storylines and the quality of the show is so bad now… I have been in denial but I have to keep it real and tell it like it is. I’ll continue to watch but I don’t enjoy it like I did. With that said I say CANCEL!

  • JJA

@Angellica T–NO, not renew it. They should re-DO it with new actors from scratch (and without all the chanting).

  • John A

People still asking for Secret Circle? Will that annoying fanbase ever go away?

  • Bill

I watched the first episode of Carrie and liked it, as it takes place around the time I was a senior in high school. I was really watching it to see if maybe my 10-year-old daughter might like it but when the girls started discussing losing their respective virginities, I decided that my daughter could not watch it even with parental discretion. Since then, episodes have sat on my DVR unwatched…

I like Arrow, Hart and Beauty but expect Beauty to get cancelled. I just now started watching Supernatural season 1 on DVD and like it so hopefully by season 9, I will be caught up.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Looked at the premises for the two CW pilots mentioned above. Utter garbage, will “die very badly”.

I wouldn’t waste five minutes on either of them (unless Summer Glau was in them.) :-)

  • Bigbrotherfan

The Carrie diaries has got to be up there with animal practice, the neighbors and girls. What a dud of a new show! I thought what made sex and the city so popular was it was 30-something year old women (some 40′s) discussing real problems they faced yet being blunt and over the top! There is no way you can translate that onto network tv. Some major themes would never be going on at Cw with censors. Plus they killed it by making high school oriented…really? Those fans are like 40s. Plus it sucked! Wow! This will be cancelled for sure!

The CW doesn’t need that crap! They have something similar with the much better Hart of Dixie that sadly performs average. The CW really only needs one type of these shows. Dixie is superior and a 3rd season is closer to syn. Same reason why BATB will go too. Dixie stays.

They need to order more similar arrow type shows! It works for them!

There is no way they should even attempt reality it’s been proven they suck at it….one exception top model and that’s just waiting for the inevitable sooner than later like this year!
The starlet, no boundaries(wb), popstar (wb) the next, the list is endless.

Just playing around with the shedule

    MONDAY
    8-90210(10)/Company Town(13)
    9-Hart Of Dixie(23)

    TUESDAY
    8-The Originals(13)/Cult(13)
    9-Supernatural(23)

    WEDNESDAY
    8-Arrow(23)
    9-Amazon(13-23)

    THURSDAY
    8-The Vampire Diaries(23)
    9-The Selection(13-23)

    FRIDAY
    8-Beauty and the beast(13-23)
    9-Nikita(21)

An addition 1/2 new dramas picked up be used in case a show fails or can be saved for the following season.

  • Dan

The only reason why The CW even considers a spin-off of Vampire Diaries is because no other show lasted behind it. So if they pick up The Originals it will definitely air behind TVD.
If they renew Beauty and the Beasst (I doubt it) they will pari it with Nikita on Fridays.
I’m not sure about Wednesday or if they want to mess with the Arrow/ Supernatural line-up. I can see them moving Supernatural back to Fridays as it will end soon and they need Arrow as a lead-in for a new show.

I think it’s too early to create a fantasy schedule as The CW hasn’t even ordered all its pilots yet and hasn’t picked anything up

  • Michael Myers

@hades. Nikita is gonna stay on 8pm they are not moving it to 9pm again they already tried that and Nikita is getting a full season. nonesense to say only 21 just to get to 88 ep. Likely 23 ep so it can go up to 90 episodes more episodes in syndication is better than less episodes. The other shows like Hart of Dixie and BatB with 23 is also really out there.

And they are gonna pair the originals with TVD to suggest otherwise is just stupid
