Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 20, 2013):

The first two episodes of The Carrie Diaries produced ratings of 0.6 and 0.5 with adults 18-49 (although the second episode's ratings are not yet in the calculations above). That'll keep it in the "toss up" range for at least a week. Any more declines and it's going to be dinner for the Cancellation Bear.

How can Nikita with the lowest ratings on the network be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

-
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Chelle aka Bondoel get lost.

Chelle aka Bondoel, the ratings for your show is pathetic. The only reason it’s still on the air is because Warner Bros wants syndication cash. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s the lowest rated show on the network. A 0.4 is nothing to brag about.

Also, people are quick to insult it because of obessed fanboys like you that ruin the show’s reputation. If you really want to support Nikita, you’d keep your big mouth shut and quit ban evading to spread your propaganda.

    2013-2014 Potential Schedule
Four new shows — at this point who knows which four of the pilots will make the cut. If the pilots suck and they haven’t got four, or they want to hold one for midseason, BATB might make it to S2. Cult if it works out would also be midseason.

    Monday

8:00 (new) The Selection or maybe Amazon
    9:00 Hart Of Dixie

    Tuesday

    8:00 (new)maybe The Hundred
    9:00 (new)maybe Oxygen

    Wednesday

    8:00 Arrow

    8:00 The Vampire Diaries
    9:00 (new) The Originals

    Friday

    8:00 Nikita
    9:00 90210 short final season and/or repeats

I’ve had the idea that if Cult survives (which I doubt, though I think the show looks good), it would work well with Supernatural. Cult is also horror, and stars SPN alum Alona Tal. However, that pairing is unlikely since neither of them are 8pm shows in terms of content.

It could potentially work if The CW gave the Tuesday 9pm slot back to the affiliates (since they just can’t hack that slot) in exchange for Wednesday 10pm. Then, they could have SPN at 9pm and Cult at 10pm, and I think the loyalty of SPN fans to Alona Tal would help Cult quite a bit. Of course, that’s just a crazy idea and isn’t actually going to happen, but eh – in the same vein as the fantasy schedules… :)

  • Walter

The CW needs to do something even more drastic than last year if they want to save their network. Here’s my prediction:
Renewals: The Vampire Diaries, Arrow, Supernatural, Nikita, 90210 (final season)
Cancellations: Hart of Dixie, The Carrie Diaries, Beauty and the Beast.

And then depending on if they renew or cancel Cult, anywhere from 5 to 6 pilot pickups.

  • Chelle

I never said the ratings wasn’t pathetic for Nikita. All I said was it did well after TVD and must’ve done something right to still be here in its third season. I don’t get how me saying that has ruined its reputation, obviously for you, you’re obsessed with ratings and use that to determine what you think of a show. Also who are you to tell me to shut my ‘big mouth’? I’m not using my mouth to write this message so I’ll continue posting on the site. Kthanksbye xoxo

  • Doug

Multi-year renewals are very rare because they have backfired more than a few times. ABC got burned badly with Lois & Clark and Drew Carey (which had a 3 year renewal – they ended up burning off the last two seasons over the summer). Those are the two standouts that I remember, anyway. You have to have reaallly strong ratings to get that kind of deal, and most shows really aren’t there these days. The distance between what made a hit and a middling performer used to be 4 or 5 ratings points in adults 18-49 (8 vs a 4, for example). Now it’s 1 (3 vs a 2).

  • herpderp

    @Chelle

Go ahead, deny the obvious. The show did poorly after TVD, that’s why it was moved to Fridays. If you can’t understand that, you’re an idiot.

Also, you’re obessed with ratings as well if you keep posting here. It’s the hypocritical morons like you that reflect poorly on Nikita’s fanbase.

  • JessAngler

If The Carrie Diaries was in a weaker time slot, like Hart of Dixie is, it would be drawing better ratings.

  • JessAngler

I mean, I agree Carrie Diaries won’t be renewed, but an 0.5 and 1.27 million viewers in a competitive time slot against an 0.6 and 1.45 million viewers in a weak time slot for Hart of Dixie. I’d be interested to see what the numbers would be if the two shows switched time slots.

  • Chelle

I honestly couldn’t give a rats ass about ratings. Just sharing my gratefulness that Nikita is still on the air regardless of their ratings. It seems your mission is to ram down peoples throats that Nikita does horribly in ratings, hello there are articles here that clearly show that. I love how you’re trying to get all smart ass about ratings and how the system works, is this all your life consists of?
Btw O.5 demo yesterday, woooo Nikita renewal here we come!! (Cause I know this obviously irritates you) ;) I’m available all week!

  • Bam

Hart of Dixie will definitely get the renewal over The Carrie Diaries. Nikita will get its final season and two between 90210, The Carrie Diaries, Cult and Beauty and the Beast will get axed along with Emily Owens M.D.

2013 – 2014 Schedule will hopefully look like this:

    Monday

8:00 pm – The Selection (New Series)

9:00 pm – 90210 (Final Season) // Midseason – Company Town (New Series)

    Tuesday

8:00 pm – Oxygen (New Series)

    9:00 pm – Supernatural

    Wednesday
    8:00 pm – Arrow

9:00 pm – Amazon (It wasn’t picked up to pilot yet, but I still think that it has a shot)

    Thursday
8:00 pm – The Vampire Diaries

9:00 pm – The Originals (New Series)

    Friday
8:00 pm – Hart of Dixie

9:00 pm – Nikita (Final Season)

On the side note, I don’t feel confident about the pilots that the CW recently picked up. Here’s hoping for the best.

  • herpderp

    @Chelle

Changing your tune so quickly? I like how you finally admit Nikita has horrible ratings, now that syndication is guaranteed. Denial only worked for you for so long.

Your fangasim over a 0.5 is irrelevant though, you’re supposed to be banned from here anyway. Yet you keep coming back to shove Nikita down everybody’s throats. Who’s the no-life loser now? I bet your a basement dwelling Maggie Q stalker.

    Get lost, Nikitard.

  • Michael

What the CW should do next season:

    HOD
    90210

    TUE:
    *New Series/Bubble Show*
    *New Series/Bubble Show*

    WED:
    Arrow
    *New Series/Bubble Show*

    THUR:
    TVD
    *The Originals*

    FRI:
    SPN
    Nikita

  • Chelle

I was being sarcastic mentioning this weeks rating. Surprised you didn’t pick up on it considering you think you know it all. It’s pathetic you’re spending your time calling people idiots/other variations of the word. Does it make you feel good about yourself? I’m far from being a ‘nikitard’, and I find it insulting that you’d use a medical condition such as retardation in an attempt to belittle people on the internet. I feel sorry for you.

  • herpderp

“Surprised you didn’t pick up on it considering you think you know it all.” Sarcasm and talking down to others like an elitist prick, yet you criticise others for doing it. Nice contradiction, Nikitard. If you think spending time on this site trash talking, then why do you keep ban evading to do it, Bondoel? Get a life.

  • Chelle

I’m only talking down to you because you did the same to me. My initial comments and replies were not aimed at you but you showed up and told me to ‘get lost’ and wanted to throw insults here and there. If you look at my past comment, I didn’t make any unreasonable claims so I don’t see why you went out of your way to rant about Nikita ratings. If you didn’t make your comment for me to get lost, I wouldn’t even be back on this article but since that’s what you want, I’m not going to give in. I can post whatever I like on the comments so I’ll continue to do so since this irks you. Also all this talk about Bondoel? I don’t even know who the hell that is but more fool you that you think I’m some other person lol

  • Anthony C.

I’m hearing that the CW isn’t done ordering pilots. So there is still hope for The Tomorrow People and Embrace.
