Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 20, 2013):

The first two episodes of The Carrie Diaries produced ratings of 0.6 and 0.5 with adults 18-49 (although the second episode's ratings are not yet in the calculations above). That'll keep it in the "toss up" range for at least a week. Any more declines and it's going to be dinner for the Cancellation Bear.

How can Nikita with the lowest ratings on the network be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

how u please renew the secret circle

  • Richard Steven Hack

Holly: “I doubt that The CW will want to premiere more than 3 shows in the fall.”

Personally I think they should. Four isn’t that big a risk over 3.

“Even if they keep the repeats on Friday, that means they need to renew 6 shows. Arrow, Supernatural, and Vampire Diaries are givens. If the syndication gods get their say, Nikita stays. Carrie Diaries is bearchow. That means 2 of HOD 90210, BatB, and Cult will be renewed.”

    Agreed.

“My bet: I’m assuming Cult fails. Hart of Dixie gets renewed. And it comes down to BatB and 90210 (both CBS productions).”

Agreed. I think BATB will be axed and 90210 will get a short final season. Personally I think the CW should produce four new shows and axe 90210 as well, but (allegedly) Pedowitz likes to give veteran shows a “proper sendoff” (i.e., get that low syndication revenue from the studio, which is what that really means.) In fact, I think the CW should do five new shows and axe HoD as well, but probably not.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Actually, they should produce four new shows, axe HoD and take the syndication revenue for a short final season of 90210. I’d take a new show possible ratings revenue over the low syndication revenue for 90210, but that’s just me. :-)

  • herpderp

    “I’m some other person lol”

    Yeah right. Beat it Bondoel.

  • Chelle

Oh not replying to the other part of my comment? Because you know I’m right. Very mature ‘herpderp’ and if this Bondoel guy/girl got banned then how am I that person?

  • herpderp

So what? You never cared to reply to other parts of my posts either. More hypocrisy from the Nikitard.

Yeah, keep acting innocent. You’re obviously Bondoel and using a proxy or VPN to ban evade. You type and phrase your words exactly like him, and show the same level of stupidity.

  • Chelle

How does that comment make me a hypocrite? Hypocrisy would be me saying that I replied to every part of your comments and then not doing so. I think you should invest in a dictionary. There’s nothing you posted that needed replying to, besides the insults and the demands for me to leave the site (which I won’t do because why should I listen to you?). LOL you know a lot about how to ban evade, are you sure you’re not Bondoel?
My comments on here have been justified, Nikita S1 ratings were better vs TSC S1 ratings. After Brandy’s reply to me, that conversation was done but of course you have some sort of grudge against ‘Bondoel’ and made false accusations that I am this person, followed by unnecessary insults and a patronizing response that didn’t need to be made. You’re the one at fault here and I’m done with your pettiness. I’m sure you’ll make a final smart ass response because the bigger man has to say the last word right? ;)

  • herpderp

*Poorly typed response that reeks of Bondoel’s arrogance*

Yup, that response pretty much confirms you’re Bondoel. How long did you think you could keep this charade up? It takes a special kind of demented person to go through the lengths you do to harass people on the internet that don’t like your favorite show. Were you loved enough as a child? Perhaps you have some kind of mental disorder. Go take your meds.

Also, your response about getting in the final word is hypocritical as usual. Idiots like you drag down the human race.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Yup, that response pretty much confirms you’re Bondoel. “

As much as I enjoy the “you’re Bondoel”, “no, I’m not!” banter, unless Bondoel has stepped up his game to disguise himself to an extent where it is invisible to us, it’s not him.

  • herpderp

Only someone as mentally demented as Bondoel would go through that much trouble to disguise himself.

Yay the tomorrow people got its pilot order! Boo….they should have picked up embrace!

  • halloween

looks like CW is passing on Amazon, that might make TVD spinoff a sure pickup now

  • Davis

    CW final pilots 2013-2014:

    The Originals
    The Selection
    Company Town
    The Hundred
    Oxygen
    Reign
    Tomorrow People
    Blink

  • cameron

amazon is gonna going to be a pilot for next season instead now

  • CrystalBall

Not excited by their pilot pickup.
The Original is like vampire diairies without plot
The selection looks like a soap romantic drama
Company town sounds like desperate housewife meet ncis
The hundred sounds cool but the “juvenile” in it looks lame
Oxygen looks like a roswell reboot
reign looks boring, what kind of teen like historic dramas ?
tomorrow people looks like another failing drama with superheroes (heroes, alphas, etc.)
    blink sounds girlish …

  • Spence

I’ve read about the pilots The CW picked up and I’m not impressed. They should’ve picked up Amazon, Embrace and Sleepy Hollow instead of Company Town, Oxygen, Reign, The Hundred and The Tomorrow People.
The only pilots I’m really excited for are The Originals and The Selection.

I agree with @CrystalBall about Oxygen and The Tomorrow People looking simular to Roswell and Heroes, which I think would be a good thing as The CW is the perfect network for sci-fi/fantasy genre shows.

Let’s see what will happen… which actors will be cast and how the pilots will develop.

  • PeterMazz

I’m glad that the CW will order an off cycle pilot, i hope that it’s Embrace, and you know… Who knows? Maybe they order Wunderland aswell. I would love them if they could cast Laura Vandervoort as the lead. I want Laura Vandervoort on my TV screen again!! :'( Hahahaha… She’s a great actreces, and i think she hould do both ”Haven & ”Wunderland” at the same time. Because, Haven its a cable tv series, so, it doesn’t take to much time to roll the episodes. Besides, I don’t like the pilots the CW ordered this season :( The only ones are like and i hope they succeed are: The Originals, The Selection… and maybe even Tomorrow People and Blink. But i think The Selection will be cancelled after only 13 episodes or one season, as Blink as well. The premise for the selection is a little boring, and it doesn’t have the plot to make it to season 4 or 5.

  • PeterMazz

    The only ones i like*

  • cameron

do off cycle pilots air during the summer or what?

  • Mrc8310

what about Embrace are they going to pick it up fo
