The ratings for most of NBC's sitcoms continue to plumb new lows. The Cancellation Bear is reluctant to try and catch a falling knife and make bold predictions about  most of them at this time since they're all putting in woeful ratings. The exception to that trend was the 2013 of Parks & Recreation which tied its season high last week. That, plus the plunge elsewhere moves its prediction up to "certain to be renewed".

After three episodes, Deception has already fallen to a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating (although the third episodes ratings aren't in the average used in the table above yet). At that level it's likely to be canceled. It was in the headline last week though, so P&R gets the headline this week.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think Deception should be move to certain cancellation. It doesn’t hold very well after the Biggest Loser. Maybe NBC can move it to Saturday nights.

NBC should not have a Comedy block because Go On and The New Normal hurt the finale of Parenthood. Here’s what NBC should do:

    NBC:
    7:00 Dateline NBC
    8:00 The Apprentice
    10:00 Fashion Star

    Mondays
8:00 The Biggest Loser (until Mar 18)/The Voice
10:00 Revolution (re-runs until Mar 18 bc its such a popular show and NBC should delete off Deception and make room for it to let fans catch up on it)/Revolution (new episodes begin on Mar. 25)

    Tuesdays
8:00 Betty White (until Mar. 19)/The Voice
9:00 Chicago Fire (This would be perfect and could give NCIS: LA and Dancing with the Stars strong competition. Plus it has potential to get strong ratings in the long run and having The Voice as its lead in will help it very much)
    10:00 Smash

    Wednesdays
    8:00 Whitney
    8:30 Guys with Kids
    9:00 The New Normal
    9:30 1600 Penn
10:00 Law and Order SVU (Its on its 14 season and I’m sure it would do well in this time slot)

    Thursdays:
    8:00 Parks and Recreation
    8:30 Community
    9:00 The Office
9:30 Go On (this has potential to do well)
    10:00 Do No Harm

    Fridays:
8:00 Grimm (re-run) (It returns in March and I think it would be appropriate for Rock Center to move to Sat nights to make more room for Grimm repeats to get fans to catch up)
    9:00 Grimm
    10:00 Dateline NBC

    Saturdays:
8:00 Up All Night (burn-offs) (This has such low ratings that I doubt NBC has confidence in this one)
9:00 Rock Center with Brian Williams
    10:00 Deception

“I am 100% certain I heard NBC announce an official cancel on Whitney a few weeks ago..”

I am 100% certain you are wrong.

Provide a credible link and you can educate all of us.

So happy Parks is certain to be renewed. One of the best show’s on TV.

@bill thanks for the response. sorry I was totally unclear in what I meant.

I was asking if you could put the average you come up with each week for each network on the index in the show name category and have it listed as a 1.00 to see where each network stands. If thats not possible I understand.

    Thanks again for responding

  • BL

Parks and Recreation is consistently funny.

Adding each show’s average poses some of the same “that’s not the right average!” problems, plus adding anything to the table makes it harder for me to produce and more complicated for readers.

  • Concerned Citizen

Both Parks and Recreation and Parenthood are certain to be renewed; life is good. Now if Community can just come back and put up decent numbers by NBC’s standards. Not holding my breath on that one, but you never know…

    @BL
    schedule

Aside from the fact that there’s no way NBC is going to shift programming around that much during the middle of the season, you’re missing at least one show (Ready for Love) and there’s no way that NBC will drop their Saturday SVU repeats for an extended period of time.

Also, they won’t move Rock Center to Saturday; they’re already willing to temporarily drop Dateline Friday for it, they want it to succeed.

Finally, they simply don’t have the episodes left to make many of those moves meaningful (as they wouldn’t happen until March – with the possible exception of pulling Deception for repeats/specials/Dateline).

  • Steph

Yay Parks and Rec! Still a hilarious show and deserves renewal!

  • Josh

I am ADDICTED to DECEPTION, I dont get why it’s not pulling numbers. The good shows always get cancelled

  • Zachary

If Whitney is cancelled I am going to start doing a happy dance!

  • CrimTV

I just want the NBC tuesday comedies to rise, why did they scored 1.3/1.2 when last week they were 1.7/1.3, how did 5 tenths just stop watching randomly ?

  • Kenny

Hold the boat 1600 Penn is closer to being cancelled then WHITNEY???…WTF!!!

  • Kenny

    @Zachary- America will too..LOL

  • Glover

I will love to see The New Normal canceled in May.

  • The End

I haven’t heard anything about Whitney being cancelled either. As far as I know it’s still airing as normal and nothings been announced either way.

  • Ultima

My guess as to how NBC will schedule the rest of the season…

    Monday
No change unless they pull Deception, which would be replaced in by Dateline (Feb/Mar) or Revolution repeats (Mar), maybe a Grimm repeat the week it returns

    Tuesday
They have to stretch Off Their Rockers out until May – fortunately it should repeat well; run Go On/The New Normal until the Voice returns, then put The Voice at 9pm to boost Smash (assuming it does decently without The Voice, say 1.7+)

    Wednesday
They’ll pair Up All Night and Whitney for five weeks; maybe they’ll burn off Save Me in double airings here or just go repeat heavy or three nights of The Voice for a couple weeks

    Thursday & Friday
No change unless Do No Harm DOAs; if they bring in Hannibal to replace it, either Thu 10pm or Fri 10pm with Rock Center in the other spot; maybe Save Me replaces 1600 Penn

    Saturday
Chicago Fire and SVU repeats, American Ninja Warrior quasi-repeats until Revolution returns

    Sunday
    No changes

It makes me happy seeing Parks and Rec at certain renewal

SVU’s been good this year, and im liking Chicago Fire, even though i wouldnt miss it. glad its doing well.

My only hope now is for Go On to rise, thats my favorite new show this year

  • gerry

hooray! nbc can give me as many seasons of PandR as it wants, I will watch all of them.

the only other nbc comedy (sans those ending this season) i care about it new normal. its really grown on me and i feel like its settled into its niche. keeping my fingers crossed but things aren’t looking all that good……

  • Lainey

I really like THE NEW NORMAL and I hope the ratings increase. I know I watch it pretty much exclusively online and I have a feeling there are many more viewers of the show doing the same thing. Please don’t cancel this adorable, funny show!
