Changes This Week:
Remember not so long ago when many were lamenting how long it was taking for the fates of Leverage, Alphas, and Drop Dead Diva? At least as far as status updates went, those were the good old days. We've now moved on to the more snooze-worthy (Zzzzzzzzzzzz) dog days of winter. Yeah, I know dog days are for summer, and it's winter and it's like 20 degrees at midday in New York City today. But, it's summer in the southern hemisphere so hello to our readers from Australia and Argentina! None of that makes this update any more interesting, but still...
HBO officially renewed Girls for a 12 episode 3rd season and TBS canceled The Wedding Band after its freshman season. That's pretty much a wrap on the changes for this week. Starz' Spartacus returned on Friday for its final season so its status has been updated. I've also changed Dallas to reflect that it's in its second season, even though that's a couple of days away and gone ahead and added FX's The Americans to the list even though it doesn't premiere until Wednesday. Just playing it safe in case with the Super Bowl coming up next week I decide to punt on a new post next weekend and merely update this one.
Notes:
- Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
- I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
- Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately air in the states.
- Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.
Last Updated January 26, 2013
Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

I guess CT is renewed for a 5th season. Bill said it, busy said it and I saw it multiple times
HBO must be the only network that renews critically-aclaimed-but-poorly-rated shows. Wait, Showtime does that too. Anyway, it’s a pity that the only show I like from any of them is Game of Thrones.
I guess CT is renewed for a 5th season. Bill said it, busy said it and I saw it multiple times
you saw it multiple times, but not one time that you can link to?
Speaking of the Super Bowl, with this years match-up I assume the ratings/viewers will down … how does that affect it’s renewal? It’s getting long in the tooth, is expensive and the ratings are down … smells like cancellation to me!
You can go to Bill’s twitter account. He said ratings don’t matter cause they got picked up for next year and only the cast contracts matter.
I don’t know what type of sites you think that are believable so just check Bill’s twitter. He said that maybe on January 5 – January 10.
@Ed: I follow Bill Lawrence on Twitter and didn’t see that. Provide a link if one exists, but nobody has reported Cougar Town was renewed for a 5th season
@FakeMeOut: ha, though I would guess ratings will be down!
@RobertSeidman
I don’t know if you think this is believable cause it’s not a press release but the first time I saw it here: http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2013/01/cougar-town-tbs-premiere-debuts-well.html
Bill’s twitter account:@VDOOZER
The Tweet was:
@stephen_09 ratings don’t matter. Picked up for next year. | January 6th
@ed: looks like Bill deleted that tweet from his timeline. Make of that what you will. It definitely hasn’t been renewed for a 5th season yet. That doesn’t mean it won’t be, only that it hasn’t been.
Ok It’s better wait for the press release
Any time soon Showtime is going to renew Shameless, House of Lies and probably Californication, fo sho!
My predictions-
Bunheads: Likely Cancellation
The Lying Game: Likely Renewal
Switched at Birth: Certain Renewal
Archer: Certain Renewal
Anger Management: Likely Renewal
Justified: Likely Renewal
Legit: On the Bubble
Californication: Likely Renewal
House of Lies: Likely Renewal
Shameless: Certain Renewal
Being Human: Likely Renewal
Cougar Town: Likely Renewal
Happily Divorced: Likely Renewal
Hot in Cleveland: Certain Renewal
@Robert @Ed – While Cougar Town hasn’t been officially renewed, at the end of this season it will have 76 episodes over 4 seasons. I believe TBS has the option for a fifth season of 15 episodes as the cast is locked in for a fifth season but nothing official yet.
For syndication purposes my guess is that Cougar Town will get another 15 episode fifth season. 91 episodes, gives ABC the ability to sell the show into international syndication.
@Nick
Anger management likely renewal? It’s certain renewal. They committed themselves to airing 90 episodes.
@Nick – I would think Bunheads would be more certain than The Lying Game, as I believe Lying Game’s numbers are down and Bunheads are up. Also I would count House of lies and Justified as certain.
As for Anger Management 45 episodes will air this year and 45 in 2014.
To clarify
2013
January-April
15 eps
June-September
15 eps
October-December
15 eps
And that schedule will likely be followed into 2014. There may be changes but 45 eps will air each year and fans won’t have to worry about renewal beyond that until at least fall 2014.
Hung, How to Make it in America, and Bored to Death are still cancelled
However interestingly enough a Bored to Death movie is in the works.
@Dan what are talking about?The lying Game numbers are up and bunhead is down.last week bunheads scored a .4 and barely a million views.Those are cancellation numbers and it did similar numbers this week.Plus The lying game is cheaper and bunheads is more expensive.It always goes over budget and Sutton Foster is not that cheap.TLG is in it’s second season and Bunheads is in it’s first.Even When secret life was performing well it didn’t do well so that is why abcfamily gave it only 8 episodes.
@Robert Seidman – Do you know the status of Comedy Central’s Ugly Americans? It hasn’t been renewed or cancelled as of now after airing the second part of season 2 last year but no other information has been released on the show’s fate as far as I know?
@silvit
I’m talking about after the 90-epsiode order is over.
@Dan
You have that mixed up. Bunheads is down and The Lying Game is up. Right now, Bunheads is getting 0.4′s and TLG is getting 0.7′s.
House of Lies is probably certain to be renewed, yeah.
I have Justified as likely because it’s the lowest of FX’s three dramas.
Episode three of Banshee last night was excellent. Brutal rape and an equally brutal beat-down of the rapist by the sheriff – he could barely walk after it since he was fighting a pro mixed martial artist.
This show is definitely on my watch list. Ivana Milicevic is very good in it as well. Last night she was beating up guards and alternately waving guns at both her gangster dad and the sheriff.
Check it out but be warned: This is True Blood level stuff by the creators of True Blood.
Back in the spam filter again… I think that was a Western song, right?
