    Some comments…

Before people get carried away with the return of AMC and OLTL, remember that (at least for now) they will not be available on television, at least as far as airing on a cable network is concerned. How many people will actually bother to watch on a portable media device or on a computer? Also, how will people know whether or not either soap will be a success…if the numbers are good I’m sure Prospect Park will crow about them, if they are not…then we will hear crickets chirping. Chirps from crickets is never a good thing.

I don’t believe that CBS has been “trying to get rid of their soaps for years”. Actually, the opposite, as I believe that they stayed with both GL and ATWT longer than ABC or NBC would have. From the time that B&B premiered in 1987 until GL was canceled in 2009, how many soaps did ABC and NBC cancel? The answer for CBS is zero.

For the first time in a long time, CBS had a press release this week touting the ratings for game shows “The Price is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal” for the week of January 14. Compare these numbers with the ones for the daytime soaps (TPIR1 & TPIR2 refers to the first and second half hours):

    TPIR1
    Viewers: 4.65 million
    W25-54: 1.3/8
    W18-49: 0.9/6

    TPIR2
    Viewers: 5.56 million
    W25-54: 1.5/9
    W18-49: 1.0/7

    LMAD1
    Viewers: 2.74 million
    W25-54: 0.9/5
    W18-49: 0.7/5

    LMAD2
    Viewers: 3.29 million
    W25-54: 1.0/6
    W18-49: 0.8/5

When combined “Price” averaged 5.11 million viewers (more than any other soap) while “Deal” averaged 3.02 million (better than GH and “Days”). When was the last time that GL – which “Deal” replaced – scored more than 3 million viewers? Personally, I still think that CBS mad the right (financial) call by axing GL and ATWT in favor of other programs.

@Dizzard The ratings i saw for The View last week…says GH is KILLING it in key 18-49 demo! @JayTN GH is Beating BOTH shows in Key 18-49 Demo……GH is ON FIRE!!!

  • JayTN

Uh, actually GH is tied with “The Price is Right” in the “key” 18-49 demographic.

I’m glad you think that GH is on fire, but I consider it a boring snoozefest.

  • Kayla Rae

DOOL is on FIRE for sure! Mesmerizing storylines, excellent acting and much intrigue…GO DAYS!!!

  • Kayla Rae

I’m with you, @JayTN, in regards to GH. It is definitely SNOOZEFEST all the way!

  • Ralph Ford

I’m happy for DAYS as those ratings went up pretty fast the last couple of weeks. I think people want to get behind DAYS but they’ve been so inconsistent quality wise these past few years that they can’t keep those viewers but lets hope they stick around this time.

GH is great right now they have the best new actress in Psycho Britt who dominated Friday’s episode with little Emma. That was the funniest scenes I’ve seen on a soap in a minute.

Can’t wait to see Steve Burton on Y&R this week.

AMC and OLTL will air on television, it’s just that their airing online first.

  • pedalstle

I echo that Kelly Thiebaud who plays Britney Westbourne on GH is a terrific actress. She has been amazing so far on this show.

  • Heather

    Ralph Ford,

I didn’t heard any official announcement that AMC and OLTL will on air on TV. Just speculation and wishful thinking from soap fans. It may happen just like it may never happen at all.

I think cable televisions will wait a couple of months to see how AMC and OLTL do on Hulu before even considering picking them up. Remember, AMC and OLTL must live with the ugly reputation that they were cancelled by one of the big 3 networks in the United States. So you can be sure that no cable network is gonna come anywhere close to these two soaps until they have proven that they are viable on Hulu/TOLN. Such assessment may take months to happen.

While I still wish they would have used a character with some history instead of Britt, she grew on me also with last week’s episodes, especially when she told Emma what she thought of her! HILARIOUS. She is a classic soap bitch, and the show needs more than Carly and Tracy running around scheming against everyone.

  • Bill40

Just heard a interview on You Tube with Eileen Davidson and she said she would love to do both Y&R and DAYS so PLEASE Y&R bring her back

  • Kool-Aid

    Britt = RATINGS!

It would be interesting if daytime tv would do better to schedule weekly episodes of dramas, comedy, reality shows. If daytime was scheduled like primetime. Would this be an expensive idea for the networks? Don’t cancel the soaps that are on now, but have them on weekly along with other types of programs. Have Days scheduled on Tuesday, followed by a new drama or comedy show. Monday at 1pm have 2 new comedy shows followed by a new series involving vampires, or a forbidden love. I hope Days stays on forever, but if money is an issue how much more cost is involved in scheduling weekly daytime shows? I watch Days every day, and now my husband is addicited. As for Judge Judy being the number one sydicated show on daytime, I don’t know where you live but here Judge Judy gives at least 4 times a day, on different channels; more exposure and easier to schdule into ones personal schedule. Is that fair? No. I have to say goodbye now Days is on. Love Salem and their city folk.

  • robert

    Days was good

  • Mikey M

Way to go Days. Love the Gay storyline.

  • Amanda

It’s so interesting to see the comments here in comparison to some other places (notably the GH FB page). I like Britt too, I think you are supposed to love to hate her, but it seems some people don’t want that kind of character. Personally, I find her to be a lot of fun. It’s hysterical that kids keep throwing up on her too! :) Anyway, I’m so enjoying GH right now, and I’m glad that all the soaps seem to be getting some positive attention.

  • Eddie

I knew with DAYS bringing characters like Kate, Nicole, Chloe, Kristen and lots of good story lines that the show is set for a great February sweeps! The show is on a roll and if it continues the rest of the year, I really believe when 2013 arrives that the show will be approved for another 2 year contract. DAYS is on fire and I am watching for sure!

  • Mirosol

Britt’s character on GH has seen a recent surge in popularity lately. I hear more about what she does on an episode now more than the show itself, like they have the huge Q heir storyline and I hear more about Britt making Emma cry than that storyline.

I believe Steve Burton debuts tomorrow on Y&R so I can’t wait to see the ratings for Y&R in February. DAYS has done the BEST at the gay storyline so far. B&B added a new black guy, hopefully that will get Liam away from the top man on the show picture.

  • TimsDale4ever

Still not impressed with Y&R and it’s ratings as I see it is STILL over 400,000 viewers behind where it was in January 2012 — but a big thumbs up for the other 3 shows who are up in the total viewer demo as well as the 18-49 one….. Here’s an example of what needs to happen QUICKLY with the arrival of Steve Burton’s character. I feel like Avery is a time bomb waiting to explode and when he arrives she INSTANTLY needs to throw a fit as to why he’s even here. But instead, THIS drag azz show will feature them in her apartment for the next 3 months casually discussing why he’s in GC over and over and over again –and these casual scenes will still be occurring in the March episodes. THAT’S one example of what’s wrong with this show….

  • Boo Boo Bear

I think they DOOL has done a GREAT job with Will/Sonny storyline. One of the best same sex couples on daytime yet. Love having all the “evil” ladies back also. Makes for some great storylines…plus all the “good girls” back also. I wish they would bring Belle/SD couple back also.

  • Pat

Tim…I respectfully disagree with your opinion. The good news is that all shows were up (except GH) over the previous week. You’ll see Y and R probably still continue to be behind versus last year’s ratings probably until the end of February, but that’s when it started to really tank last year. Overall the writing is SO much better, and SO much more realistic which is what has always set this show apart from most soaps. Lovin’ it right now.
