Pat…I agree that it is a little bit misleading to just look at the year-to-year numbers without taking anything into consideration. For example, the ratings for “Days” took a nosedive in 2007 when then-NBC president Jeff Zucker hinted that the network would not renew its contract with the soap. However, the numbers gradually improved and by 2008 it was posting big increases year-to-year, causing a casual viewer to think “this show is really on fire, look at how many viewers it has gained”, when in reality the “gains” were mostly likely those viewers who left after Zucker’s comments slowly coming back.

Cab…it is financially impossible to have a primetime-esque schedule in the daytime. That is one reason why daytime shows can be canceled when it looks like they still have a good audience…the show is simply not earning enough in advertising to pay for its production costs. It reportedly takes $5 million (yes, million with an “m”) to produce one (yes, one) episode of “Two and a Half Men”. That means that over the course of a season, it costs $110 million to produce the series (a season is approx. 22 episodes). Look at how many ads CBS is going to have to sell to equal $110 million dollars…and that is just breaking even. And “Men” has roughly 3 times the audience of Y&R.

If the networks are struggling to make enough money in primetime, imagine how hard it would be if you basically had two primetime schedules, one at night and one during the day.

I’m trying to hang in with Y&R but the s/ls (if thats what they are) are more ‘reality tv’. Only s/l not about musical beds (with no foundation) is the bully s/l. Sorry, but nothing realistic, just shallow lazy writing. Y&R use to make you think. Hope things gel soon…..

DAYS is finally getting back to good, solid storytelling instead of this “fly by night” stuff. I am glad that it seems to be working for them. I love Lauren Koslow and am very glad they are giving her character some great stuff to do because she is very good at “dramatic acting”. Eileen Davidson is also very good and I am enjoying her being back at DAYS! Good job DAYS ….YOU DESERVE THOSE IMPROVED RATINGS!!!

  • dave

Great News for Days with the out of this world ratings right now! Show is outstanding. For fans of World Turns, this show has the same feel as ATWT with some current cast from DOOL also alums from As the World Turns. Why not tune in Days if you aren’t already. It’s a great escape for an hour!

Just a word of caution to YR fans. JFP has a history of starting well, then over a year or two, she starts to dismantle the fabric of the show that most of the fans love and recognize, and before you know it, the show is barely recognizable. She does create a show that many fans will still enjoy, but she will likely turn off lots of viewers if she does what she has done with previous shows. Anyone a fan of any character over 45 should be very worried. She doesn’t care about them, and she will diminish their air time. In the case of YR, with their actors’ and actresses’ egos, expect departures.

Maybe things will be different this time with JFP, but her track record is incredibly consistent.

Great News on ratings for Days of Our Lives. Great show right now as well. Keep it up DOOL!

Interesting Pat that you think the writing is better — I think it’s basically the same. For instance, how many more times are we going to hear Lauren tell Michael I can’t belive you think our son pushed Jaime off the roof. I’m sure Michael as well as the viewers got it the first of 40 times she has said this. That’s not good writing — that’s lazy writing. It’s not so much the stories this show tells, it’s the excessively repetitive dialogue day in and day out that bogs the show down — move on already. The show is simply too draggy. It takes forever for ANYTHING to happen. Speed it up and I think the show would improve by at least 50%.

Whatever, I don’t find DAYS’ storylines at all interesting right now. But GH hasn’t been much better lately, and they compete with each other in my region. Maybe bored GHers thought they’d give DAYS a try? All I know is, FRISCO is returning next week, followed by LAURA and SCOTTY, KEVIN, GH’s ought to be kicking DAYS’ butt starting next week. :D

  • Derrick

    I wouldn’t discredit JFP yet!!!!
Let’s see what she does first!

  • jonboyelk

As someone who is all for respecting history, I still don’t think I would much care if Victor Nikki Victoria Sharon Christine Paul were put out to pasture on Y&R. It’s getting increasingly difficult to even look at Vic and Nikk without counting the bags and sags. Maybe JFP might do well by clearing the slate.

  • Pat

I’m fine with the pace. While there may have been more “action” under MAB, the stories ran too fast and were not believable. Everyone was getting married, having sex, impersonating someone, robbing banks with chipmunk heads…too much for Y and R. Stories would stop…start and never finish…

    Looking forward to 2013 overall.

  • JayTN

Although there is a separate article, I thought I would mention it here in case anyone missed it…CBS has renewed its entire daytime line-up for the 2013-14 TV season.

  • Mike

I saw that Jay TN. And saw the info you posted about the game shows. I love CBS’s lineup right now. And glad it all got renewed.

  • Kayla Rae

I agree, Boo Boo Bear, it would be great to have Belle and Sean Douglas back on DOOL. So LOVIN’ Days!!!

  • Kayla Rae

You’re right, Diana, about GH being boring. However, you are very much off the mark saying similar things about DOOL. Days is on fire and anything but boring! It’s great!

  • Kelby

The new regime at Y&R has done some things that I like. For instance, getting rid of a few useless characters. Unfortunately, I think most of the characters and stories are useless now. Years of inconsistent, bad writing has really hurt this show. I really hope these new head honchos can undo the damage of all the writers since Bill Bell, but I won’t hold my tongue.

    Possible storyline for DAYS…

Having Hope without Bo isn’t working…have Bo call Hope advising he’s getting closer on the work he’s doing to bring down Stefano…following week Belle shows up in Salem with Clare. Shawn D was helping Bo and both disappeared. Hope receives a call from Bo and he says Stefano has him hostage and he has big news…line goes dead. Hope and Belle tell John what happened and John flies out of Salem to find Bo & Shawn D. Marlena is worried and convinces Brady to go after John. John & Brady work together to track down Bo & Shawn D tucked away in one of Stefano’s mansions in Europe and rescue them. Bo reveals the big secret, Lexie is alive!

Meanwhile back in Salem…Kristen vs. Marlena things get more and more tense. Belle & Chloe reconnect; Chloe continues to put a rift in between Daniel & Jennifer. The tension between Nick and Will continues to build, strange accidents start to happen for Will. Sam FINALLY makes a decision and dumps Rafe & EJ and goes old school and get’s back together with Lucas. Abe & Kayla grow close, the kids bond and BOM…Lexie shows up with Bo, Shawn D, John & Brady. She explains that when she became ill, Stefano had her whisked away for some very experimental treatment that had close to no chance of working but low and behold it worked (not a fan of the crazy return deaths but come on Lexie is amazing and would love to see her back).

Abe, Lexie & Kayla deal with the situation. Eric though a priest slowly redevelops feelings for Nicole. With John & Brady’s return the final scenes in the Kristen saga take place and they break up. Nicole consoles Brady and a love triangle develops between Nicole and brothers Eric & Brady…Eric renouncing his priesthood. There’s an attack on Will/Sonny and Nick’s behind it! Shawn D. & Belle decide to stay in Salem for a bit, their 10 year high school reunion comes up. Phillip & Mimi return to Salem for it and something devastating happens at the reunion. Stefano, Kristen, EJ and Chad are all alone and the DiMera’s plan a revenge on the townspeople of Salem…something bigger than big…

Should I be a write for Days or what?? :P

  • JayTN

Just one problem…the actress who played Lexie – Renee Jones – retired from acting, so she would either have to agree to return or the role would need to be recast. And we know how some fans are about recasts.

Ultimately, I do think that Nick will go off the deep end and either end up dead or back in jail.

  • Pat

    Kelby…Me too!

  • jonboyelk

Is there like an alternate version of GH somewhere out there that I’m not seeing because, for the life of me I don’t understand how ANYONE who CONSISTENTLY watches GH could label it boring. Makes me think those who throw rotten tomatoes don’t really watch it at all. Far-fetched maybe, implausible perhaps, but never boring.
