If you're thinking, "Gee, there must not be much to write about for CBS" you'd be right. Vegas continues as "likely to be canceled". I'd love for there to be as many crazy Fan Excuse Bingo players for it as there were for Harry's Law last season, but that doesn't look likely. Unlike Harry's Law, which had a lot of irrlevant total viewers compared to the rest of the NBC dramas which gave hope to the misguided, the total viewership of Vegas is nothing special compared to other CBS dramas.

The only other thing to talk about "Which of CSI:NY, The Good Wife or The Mentalist gets canceled?" will be back next week. I bet you just can't wait!

Note to the nitpicky commenters, although its just about as certain as it gets, while the cast and crew have signed on for another season, How I Met Your Mother has not yet been officially renewed. 1/30 update. Now officially renewed.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

An advice for Vegas’s fans. Just enjoy the remaining 8 episodes because it’s certainly not coming back next Season. A 1.9 is not good considering its lead-in (3.1). The Show will be lucky to be pick-up by another network !

  • Andy

Whats with TGW being cancelled??? You people are crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Scott

@ilinois there is no show CBS will replace it with that will do any better. That’ll I will guarantee.

Aside of the NCIS Sesame Street idea or perhaps NCIS MacGyver where he lands a place, docks an aircraft carrier, saves a submarine and a lunar lander all in one episode with his leatherman while winging 46 suspects an episode nothing will do well with LA as the lead.

In a year or two they’ll still be looking for the show to capture the people that went to bed after watching LL and Robin save the world again.

  • spycomics

@Mon I wouldn’t want Vegas to go to Friday. You’re right, it would do worse there. But, I’d rather it be on Friday than not at all. I also believe that if Vegas and NCIS LA were flipped on the CBS Tuesday schedule, Vegas at 9:00, LA at 10:00, Vegas would be pulling the numbers NCIS LA is now and vice versa.

  • Justin121

Vegas’ 1.9 is a quite respectable rating for a 10pm freshman.

Any show with a 2.0+ average will get renewed, and any 10pm drama with a 1.8+ average will get renewed.

Vegas might join Unforgettable as a summer series, Good Wife has 2-3 more seasons in it, Mentalist has one more season left.

How I Met You Mother is FINALLY ENDING!!!

  • PurpleDrasi

“Vegas’ 1.9 is a quite respectable rating for a 10pm freshman.”

Given the low ratings most 10pm shows are getting I agree. However, CBS will need to cancel some of it’s shows to bring in new ones. They certainly aren’t going to cancel anything that is doing better than 1.9.

The truth is they probably won’t find anything that will do better in that timeslot. The reality, however, is that they will keep trying anyway.

  • Holly

If Vegas were maintaining a 1.9, you guys might have a point. But making a decision based on ONE bump in ratings would be asinine. If Vegas by some miracle manages to hold that or better for the rest of the season, we’ll talk. But as of now, it’s just an anomaly in a sea of bad ratings.

  • outlawz

next year i want cbs killing the other network tuesdays to be like this

    08. ncis
    09. new ncis <try la on monday move 5o to other night
    10. vegas 2013(half season) & golden boy (only if peak up for half seaso) if dont and unfogetable do good in the summer then brin it in as (unforgatable summer hit show)

  • Mon

    Very well said, Holly

Good Wife has 2-3 more seasons in it

OMG Juliana welcome to the boards!!!

  • Hepha

I’m also curious to know if your information is verified, tvlover ! As many have said, CBS probably doesn’t know yet if CSI NY will get the axe ! Everything depends on Golden Boy, which I hope will be a failure !
CSI NY has been great so far, and I would be really dissatisfied to say goodbye (though it’s been 2 years since CSI NY is two inches away from cancellation !)

  • CBSviewer

    @ Helpha

Unfortunatly you’re wrong. Golden Boy is not a factor in CSI: NY’s Renewal or cancelation. Both Shows air on Friday at 9/8c. If CBS cancels both it’ll count just as one cancelation because they air in the same slot.
Of course if Golden Boy is a failure (I hope it will be !) CSI: NY’s chances will increase but remember last year ! NYC 22 replaced CSI: Miami on Sunday at 10/9c, it was a failure but both Shows were canceled.
On the other hand, if Golden Boy is a hit (lol) CBS will have to cancel two veterans.

  • Scott

Can someone explain Vegas to me? With a weekly rating of over 11 milion viewers and the highest viewers by far in its time slot, why in the world is it “certian” to be canceled? Not every show can be the NCIS ratings juggernaut.

  • Holly

    1) Advertising rates are set primarily based on the 18-49 demo. Since that’s where the networks get their money, renewal/cancel decisions are based on that demo. Total viewers don’t matter (just ask Harry’s Law).

    2) Shows are not competing with other networks for renewal, they’re competing with shows on their own network. Winning your timeslot is only good for PR.

3)Even if total viewers did matter it wouldn’t save Vegas because 11 million isn’t noteworthy for CBS.

Vegas is certain cancellation because with the exception of this week it has consistently been the lowest-rated non-Friday show on the network. And it has no chance at syndication $$.

But let’s try this another way. What higher-rated show should be cancelled to save Vegas?

  • Elijah

Why does anyone think CBS is going to cancel Vegas!?
It has 2 A+ actors in Dennis Quad and Michael Chiklis.

It has only been on since September but it already has more than 183,000 facebook likes! Not to mention it is critically acclaimed, and is a very sophisticated show and it enhances CBS’ overall image.

Do you really think CBS is really going to cheese off 183,000+ fans on facebook plus 2 A+ actors and all the critics praising the show because not enough teenagers and young people watch it? It’s such a great and sophisticated show that if they cancel it, it will hurt CBS’ brand and image for years to come, not to mention all the loyal CBS viewers that will boycott in force. It will also make them look very classless by cancelling a sophisticated and intelligent show with 2 very established actors.

And people seem to forget that Seinfeld and NCIS didn’t start out as juggernauts, and we can clearly see Vegas is growing especially since it got a whopping 11 million VIEWERS!

  • Elijah

Not to mention if they were going to cancel it, wouldn’t it of been sent to Friday or Saturday by now, you know, “where shows go to die”?
Why have it in a high profile time slot following 2 established veteran shows in NCIS and NCIS LA if they’re going to cancel it?

  • Holly

Try reading the post right above yours.

Also, Facebook fans are less than meaningless and threats of boycotts are laughable.

  • Holly

Now I’m trying to decide if Elijah is serious or a parody… Seems over the top, but we’ve had very over the top people before…

  • CBSviewer

    @ Elijah

CBS doesn’t care about the awards or about Facebook likes. What matter is the RATINGS which mean MONEY !
Vegas will be canceled because it’s the lowest rated non-Friday Show. There’s no other possibilities ! It it moves to Friday which is already the “death night” it would be worse (same thing for Sunday).
Vegas will be canceled once for all (I mean no summer pick-up) because its ratings are pathetic and the only important thing is RATINGS !

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

You must be a “parody troll”, no one who drops by this site could possible make a post full of so much wrong information. Unless they did it on purpose.

I’ll bit in one respect, if FB “likes” matter for anything you might want to tell the 200,000 to 400,000 who like the pages of Pan Am, Harry’s Law, and GCB. All residing forever in the TV dustbin.

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

Any and all this Vegas as a summer series talk is ridiculous to me.
After the decision to cancel Unforgettable was made last year in May less than 8 weeks later the decision was reversed.
I would think CBS would want to see how the “Unforgettable experiment” works before giving Vegas the same treatment.

Plus any comparison to Unforgettable and the summer season is foolish for multiple other reasons.
-The latest ratings bump thus far appears to be a blip of the shows unfortunate radar.
-I believe the show is already rating lower than Unforgettable was last year even considering season to season overall viewership declines. Spring could be a bloodbath.
-The network hardly gave it any kind of vote of confidence/leg up by not placing it after The Super Bowl or the last football playoff game.
-Vegas is not a B- Poppy Montegomery vehicle than then underwent some major casting/budget cuts to even find itself on during the summer. I believe somebody posted links that Vegas costs 3.5 million an episode whereas TV shows cost 3.0 million an episode on average. How is Vegas going to look without Michael C. or Dennis Q. or it’s CGI?
