If you're thinking, "Gee, there must not be much to write about for CBS" you'd be right. Vegas continues as "likely to be canceled". I'd love for there to be as many crazy Fan Excuse Bingo players for it as there were for Harry's Law last season, but that doesn't look likely. Unlike Harry's Law, which had a lot of irrlevant total viewers compared to the rest of the NBC dramas which gave hope to the misguided, the total viewership of Vegas is nothing special compared to other CBS dramas.

The only other thing to talk about "Which of CSI:NY, The Good Wife or The Mentalist gets canceled?" will be back next week. I bet you just can't wait!

Note to the nitpicky commenters, although its just about as certain as it gets, while the cast and crew have signed on for another season, How I Met Your Mother has not yet been officially renewed. 1/30 update. Now officially renewed.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Holly,
    Thank you for explaining, I am rather new to trying to figuring out how the Cancel/Renew thing works.

    I had high hopes for vegas, but I suppose I shall just enjoy it while it lasts.

  • Holly

    Scott,

    I suppose I shall just enjoy it while it lasts.

    That’s what fans of every show should do, whether it lasts 13 episodes or 13 seasons.

  • Splum

    The Mentalist was the #14 show of last week. Why would it be cancelled???

  • Ultima

    @Splum
    The Mentalist was the #14 show of last week. Why would it be cancelled???

    CBS has to cancel a veteran drama to make room on the fall schedule for Elementary. If CSI:NY and The Good Wife are both more profitable to CBS than The Mentalist, it will be canceled.

  • Leverage-Fan

    To be more profitable than “CSI: New York” or “The Good Wife”, “The Mentalist” have to get by far better ratings which didn’t happen this season. As I said before, I think only Warner can save “The Mentalist” now. They have to drop the costs and/or make a deal with CBS regarding the costs. Whatever: If this season would be the end of “The Mentalist” all I want is a true series finale!!!

  • Holly

    @Leverage-Fan,

    To be more profitable than “CSI: New York” or “The Good Wife”, “The Mentalist” have to get by far better ratings

    Not necessarily. CBS doesn’t get the syndication money from The Mentalist, but they also don’t pay the full production costs. Of course, for The Good Wife to be profitable they’ll have to manage to make a decent syndication deal, which isn’t a guarantee.

  • Leverage-Fan

    @Holly:

    If Warner makes much money with syndication, DVDs, whatever with “The Mentalist” AND want a proper finale they COULD lower the costs which CBS has to pay for the show to get one final season to tie things up. They did this for several series in the last few years and hopefully for “The Mentalist”, too. This is all I can say AND hope about!

    CBS Sweeps Thursday, Winning The First Night of the February Sweep in Adults 18-49 for The First Time Since 2006

    http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/02/01/cbs-sweeps-thursday-winning-the-first-night-of-the-february-sweep-in-adults-18-49-for-the-first-time-since-2006/167630/

    Congratulations for CBS. Well deserve. My favorrite part:

    Person Of Interest swept its time period, finishing first in households (9.5/15), viewers (15.62m), adults 25-54 (4.6/11) and adults 18-49 (3.2/09). Person Of Interest beat a first-run “Grey’s Anatomy” by its largest margin of victory to date in viewers (+6.85m viewers), adults 25-54 (+1.2 rating points) and adults 18-49 (+0.4 rating points).

    LOVE IT.

  • Don

    NCIS was renewed for season 11.

  • Don

    I like Vegas and while I think it’ll be canceled I think CBS could put it on Fridays at 8 PM and keep the rest of the night in tact. CSI: NY keep at 9 but have it be its final season. CBS hasn’t had much success in launching a new show on Fridays at 8 so use an established one that fits into the cops theme for the night.

    Keep Tuesday 8 to 10 the same then launch a new drama at 10 PM. Perhaps Beverly Hills Cop.

  • Holly

    @Don,

    I’m quite sure CBS wants to launch more than one drama next season. so they’ll have to do more than move Vegas to Friday.

  • Elijah

    The mere fact that Vegas has 2 A+ actors, is in a plum time slot following 2 strong veteran shows in NCIS and NCIS LA, has large total viewer numbers that are steadily growing, and the fact the show is critically acclaimed and has a large passionate fanbase will be enough for it to be renewed. Mark my words.

  • Holly

    @Elijah,

    So…. not bothering to read the posts explaining why it’s likely to be canceled then?

  • DeanW

    I think the best thing to do is to cancel The Good Wife !

    FRIDAY
    8:00 – NEW DRAMA
    9:00 – CSI: NY
    10:00 – Blue Bloods

    SUNDAY
    8:00 – The Amazing Race
    9:00 – Undercover Boss
    10:00 – The Mentalist

    Undercover Boss was an amazing lead-in for CSI: Miami which got a 2.6 during its ninth Season. With Undercover Boss as lead-in The Mentalist could rise to a 2.0-2.2.
    TGW is terrible. A 1.5 is a Friday Rating !

  • Elijah

    @Holly
    I’ve read them, but it doesn’t change the fact that if CBS wanted to pull it they would of or would of shipped it off to Saturdays by now. And it got a full season pickup.

  • Nick

    @DeanW

    Why would they sacrifice Fridays to save The Mentalist? Undercover Boss should stay where it is, holding up Fridays.

    Also, there’s no way that would work. CBS cannot have CSI: NY, Undercover Boss AND The Mentailist on their fall schedule. There’s not enough room. They’d have to cut one of their hit dramas/realities, which I don’t see them doing.

  • Nick

    @Elijah

    if CBS wanted to pull it they would of or would of shipped it off to Saturdays by now. And it got a full season pickup.

    Here’s a list of shows cancelled last year that recieved full-season pickups (or aired all episodes for midseason shows) and were not shipped to Saturdays:

    GCB
    Missing
    The River
    A Gifted Man
    CSI: Miami
    Rob
    The Secret Circle
    Ringer
    Alcatraz
    The Finder
    Are You There Chelsea?
    Bent
    Harry’s Law

    If a show is being cancelled, the networks doesn’t HAVE to burn it off or pull it. A full season does not guarantee renewal.

    And, BTW, CBS could pull Vegas anytime they want to. Just ask Ben & Kate.

  • Holly

    @Elijah,

    Your theory is that any show that makes it to May gets renewed? Is this the first time you’ve looked at renewal/cancellation decisions?

  • DeanW

    @ Nick

    You’re right Undercover Boss should stay where it is (Premieres mid-season to replace the new flop at 8). The Good Wife is too weak to stay while The Mentalist has better ratings in a hardest slot. Look, The Good Wife is on Sunday for two years and its ratings are decreasing week after week. I think it’s time to stop the bloodbath and give to TGW the end it deserves.
    If TGW has a syndication deal in May, CBS will probably Renew the Show for a fifth Season BUT if at the end of the year there is still no syndication deal The Good Wife is done !

    On Friday, premiering a new drama at 8 seems to be the best choice. CSI: NY and Blue Bloods work well together and it’ll be hard to find a better duo for Friday night. Blue Bloods fell in September because of Made in Jersey but it went up when CSI: NY took its slot at 9. 1.5-1.6 is not bad for Friday considering the competition (Shark Tank,…).
    CBS should premiere new dramas on Tuesday at 9, Thursday at 10 and Friday at 8 (Plus a new drama on Sunday at 10 to replace The Mentalist in March/April).
    CBS should move Hawaii Five-0 to Sunday at 9, NCIS: Los Angeles to Monday at 10 and Elementary to Tuesday at 10,

  • Petar Ivanov

    So from today CBS will take #1 spot.
