Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 27, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D. canceled 0.51
90210 :| :| :| 0.58
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.80
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.87
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.02
Supernatural      1.31
Arrow      1.60
Vampire Diaries      1.96

Fans of 90210 better hope that the CW's Mark Pedowitz is still handing out short final seasons for old shows, because that's the only way 90210 survives into next season. Its ratings are dreadful, even for the CW. Since reading Mr. Pedowitz's mind is the only way to know for sure, I'm keeping it as a "toss up".

Desperate fans may cite Pedowitz's public statements as cause for hoping for one thing, or another, but after doing this for more than five years, I'm 100% certain that trying to assign probabilities based on TV executive public statements is folly.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    For next week:

“Is Beauty and the Beast Friday bound?” :?

  • Jonay

Why can’t the Cw renew all the shows like beauty and the beast hart if Dixie the Carrie diaries and cult if it does well? they’ll have more shows and may move one to Fridays at 9.

  • Winston Mize

That’s what I’m thinking, I don’t feel the CW is willing to risk a whole night by putting two new dramas in both slots to fend for themselves. it’s looking like 90210 or TCD is getting that monday pity renewal for 13 eps, followed by a new show in the spring. on friday, it’s gonna be cult or BatB with Nikita (in it’s final year) possibly both with half season orders. starting a new show on fridays is too risky, and rarely works…Grimm is an exception to this rule, someting with an established base has to go there. we could see 90210/cult there as well and tcd/new drama at 7 on mondays leading in to another new show. Bottom line is that it’s hard to pick what’s going on the cw. Hod is gonna be renewed, it’s a given steady performer up against NCIS. Next year it’ll probably be where Emily is now though.

  • Bob

I must be the only one that STILL loves 90210. I hope they get their pity renewal in order to have a decent farewell.

  • Alan

@Bob you’re not alone. I’m really enjoying this season of 90210. They know it’s about the timeslot, it was doing fine when it was at 8/7c. Nikita would do bad at any time…

  • Winston Mize

I still love 90210! WE are the few lol. –

  • argy

So 90210 got a 0.3 only one time and you behave like it’s gettin 0.3’s all the season. if i remember properly it got a 0.6 before the christmas break. So, don’t you think that maybe Carrie Diaries is involved in 90210 going down. I personally believe that Carrie Diaries is the main reason for this 0.3! I’m sure that if 90210 was the lead-in for Monday nights insteaf of Carrie Diaries, it would still get 0.4’s and possibly 0.5’s . But this is just my opinion!

  • Adir

OMG !! i want more 565562 seasons of 90210 !! the best show for me!

  • Honey Badger

@ hello, You are right, CW The Carrie Diaries should be cancelled immediately, this show is DOA, and next week it will go against a new CBS How I Met Your Mother , and not a repeat like it did last night. Expect The Carrie Diaries ratings to keep dropping and CW to cancel it.

90210 and Carrie Diaries are serving an audience that doesn’t exist anymore. They must end them both, the sooner the better. Renew everything else

  • BlueSky

90210 need to be cancelled. no need for farewell season or whatsoever. just like @Justin said, it will only be taking the spot of another show that could use the timeslot. it is the same goes to TCD. For the show that only got 0.5 after 3 episode is just pathetic. unless something happen a.k.a their rating up, this show is likely to be the next Emily Owens.

Even i really hate B&tB, but i think it will likely to be renewed because there’s no other show left to be renewed (if 90210 & TCD are canceled + 1 free slot of ANTM). unless CW want to aired 4 new series next Fall, then B&tB will be canceled.

i hope CW will pickup The Selection, The Tomorrow People, Company Town, The Original and Oxygen. For Blink series IMO, who cares about that girl dad in coma (unless there’s some mystery and crazy-deeper-dark-secret-and-some-people-want-kill-all-of-their-family-thing), then i don’t think it will be interesting at all.

  • Wright

Oxygen sounds a lot like Roswell. I can’t wait to check it out. I would rather see two new shows premiere on the same night then to renew 90210 or TCD.

  • Sam

    @Hammard & @Winston

You guys are probably right about the Monday timeslot, but I wouldn’t rule out The CW changing their schedule around a little so that they don’t have to start Monday’s over with two new shows. It’s possible they could place HOD or B&TB if it’s renewed into the Monday timeslot and launch a new show from there. Although, I don’t think it’s fair to launch a new show from two shows which pull mediocre ratings, I think the new show would stand a better chance than being launched from 90210 or The Carrie Diaries. So I still think it’s possible, although maybe a little unlikely, that both shows could be cancelled.

On another note, I think it’s safe to say that in order to better determine B&TB’s renewal, we should wait to see how Cult performs. If Cult under-performs like I’m sure B&TB is for The CW, BOTH scream a Friday timeslot to me, paired with Nikita.

I think if Cult is a surprise hit – really, I think it looks like a good show, but I don’t think it’ll gain the audience The CW would like – then I think it’s pretty safe to say either TCD or B&TB will be cancelled.

Although, I guess we really don’t know. The CW is such an overly complicated network to predict anything unless the ratings are REALLY bad (by CW standards) but even still… Nikita survived, and will likely continue to survive for at least one more season so I really don’t know. It’s such a mind f— with this network.

  • JJA

Wow, 90210 dipped even lower than Nikita. The CW should just announce THIS as its last season. Order an extra 2 episodes to give it some closure and a good send-off, and then be done with it.

Renew (for sure): VD, Arrow, Sup, Nikita and HOD.

I’d say HOD was a 50/50, but then TCD premiered to lackluster numbers. I think now HOD is a safe bet for renewal.

90210, B&TB and TCD can go either way.

If it were me, I’d renew TCD for 13 episodes to see how it does. It’s a better show than B&TB (in terms of quality), plus it doesn’t have the VD lead-in. TCD also appears to be doing better online.

  • tara

@JJA When it comes to quality thats a matter of opinion. BATB is doing better than HOD AND TCD. It should be renewed over it especially with such a devoted online fanbase.

  • Penny

90210 has become unbearable to watch, and that’s coming for a hardcore fan. The show lost it’s spark after Season 3 and now is just plain boring to watch. They should just cancel it now or wrap it up with a short order in the fall.

  • Tom

@Rachel: “the president at the CW is an idiot”

Of course Pedowitz doesn’t care about fans getting closure. But as long as the press is dumb enough to repeat it, he’s going to say that rather than the truth of “We need some kind of spackle, and a show with syndicated backend and an established audience is a much safer bet than yet another new show.”

Speaking of which, 0.3 for 90210 is clearly not good. But for all we know, this is just the harbinger of everything on the network that isn’t Arrow/Supernatural/VD dropping to 0.3-0.4 as Spring gets going.

As to The Selection, I believe it is being rewritten, recast, and reshot for this year. Last year’s version no longer exists.

  • Winston Mize

I do think that BatB could make a a great pairing for Oxygen and BatB does have a slight advantage over the middling shows at this time so why not mondays?! HoD could stay and pair with 90201/TCD or new drama blink or Company town maybe even the selection or tomorrow people. Big maybe on those latter two though.

  • Winston Mize

though compared to HoD and even TCD, BatB could be called a bit unstable ratings wise. While I don’t feel it’s done bottoming out, for the time being BatB is barely performing above those two.

  • BL

CW (This how they should do their schedule)

Wednesdays are doing very well. Leave them alone.

    8:00 The Carrie Diaries
9:00 Cult (re-runs if this show becomes a success. This will get great exposure and might even rate higher than a new 90210 episode)

    8:00 Hart of Dixie
9:00 Beauty and the Beast (This will test to see how it does without a TVD-lead in)

    8:00 The Vampire Diaries
9:00 Cult (Though it would do okay after HOD, it would benefit better after TVD since BATB has failed to live up to expectations)

    8:00 Nikita
9:00 90210 (Why does it have to air on Mondays since it gets such low ratings? Its ratings lately have been worse than Nikita. It needs to get dumped out of Mondays).

ANTM returns in the summer on Fridays

  • Melanie

90210 made it to 100 episodes – be happy with that, forget the ‘final season’ and let it go, CW, let it go.

CW picked up 8 pilots (actually 7 plus the Originals which is an episode of TVD so cost defrayed) and is keeping their Wonder Woman story for next season or ‘off season’ according to Deadline. Historically its only been 6 pilots each season, so this I think, shows that the CW may actually be serious about turning things around.

Of course, having more pilots to choose from doesn’t mean that they’re going to pick more shows up to series but if I were a toss-up show, I’d be chewing my fingernails.
