Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 27, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D. canceled 0.51
90210 :| :| :| 0.58
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.80
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.87
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.02
Supernatural      1.31
Arrow      1.60
Vampire Diaries      1.96

Fans of 90210 better hope that the CW's Mark Pedowitz is still handing out short final seasons for old shows, because that's the only way 90210 survives into next season. Its ratings are dreadful, even for the CW. Since reading Mr. Pedowitz's mind is the only way to know for sure, I'm keeping it as a "toss up".

Desperate fans may cite Pedowitz's public statements as cause for hoping for one thing, or another, but after doing this for more than five years, I'm 100% certain that trying to assign probabilities based on TV executive public statements is folly.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I only watch 90210 to see Redondo Beach, it’s where I grew up.

I’ve always suspected that 90210 is a goner – no reason to give it a final season, and with its dismal ratings, it just makes sense to cancel. TCD and BatB will also get axed. Nikita, HoD will be renewed. If Cult ends up premiering horribly, BatB will be saved and moved to another slot, and Cult will be axed. Either way, 90210 and TCD are cancelled.

  • Brandy

I think Beauty ,Cult,Carrie Diaries will be cancelled(which is sad cause I love Beauty & Carrie Diaries),and Nikita ,90210 get final seasons though 90210 will have 10-13 episodes and HoD renewed.I think Beauty will be cancelled because it’s ratings could and Likley will fall in spring and if it’s renewed,it’ll go to Fri where it’ll die and CW didn’t want to do that with Secret Circle.I think 90210 will get a short final season cause I think it’s season finale has already been written and I think they film it in Feb or March so they wouldn’t have to properly wrap things up.90210s ratings fell partly because it moved to 9pm which is a hard timeslots against other shows and DVr usage.

    Does anyone else notice that the cw is a copycat?Most of their tv shows are remakes.Examples:Carrie Diaries-Sex and the city,90210-BH 90210,Cult-saw,arrow-smallville,beauty &beast-beauty&beast,nikita-la femme nikita.upcoming selection-hunger games,amazon-wonder women,Tomorrow people-tomorrow people…hmm

They need to cancel 90210, just give the writers some time to wrap it up. This week its a .3. There’s not enough of a loyal audience to argue for a final season wrap up. By next season it could be a .1 or a .2. It’s a waste of space that could go to a better show.

They should and I think will cut the Carrie Diaries. It’s just not getting an audience. Plus that whole remove the World Trade Center from their timeline decision is strange. Personally I think this is a show that would have done better a few years ago.

I think Hart of Dixie could go either way, BUT if it gets picked up for season three doesn’t that mean that they “have” to do a season 4 based on your arguments in relation to syndication? SO they should also give the writers notice and get it wrapped up. Honestly, the stories on the show already seem headed to an ending anyway. It could easily be wrapped up by season’s end. Side note, it’s too bad about Emily Owens. It’s actually a good show.

Obviously they will keep Arrow and Supernatural. Though I can’t imagine Supernatural will go for more than one or two more seasons.

TVD will obviously be renewed, and I wouldn’t be surprised if The Originals gets picked up taking BATB’s time slot. That said, I think Beauty and the Beast will be renewed and moved to another time slot. It’s doing better than most of the old shows on the network and has a passionate, loyal audience that’s growing. There’s creative potential there with room for ratings growth. It’s still holding its own; not to mention it won People’s Choice. So I don’t think it will be cut. It will just be moved to another night. Plus, they’re adding some really GOOD actors to the cast soon which could also help the ratings.

Friday, I just have no idea about Nikita. Perhaps he will give it a final season for syndication purposes. Love the show, but it is possible to wrap it up.

That all said, based on the new pilots being worked on for next season, it seems that Pedowitz is going in a very genre heavy direction and away from the old CW. So to me it seems like Arrow, Supernatural, TVD, BATB and Nikita (and probably Cult) still fit into this “vision.” 90210, TCD, HOD do not. Neither do Gossip Girl or Emily Owens but they’re gone. I don’t know if that means anything, but it could be a clue about Pedowitz’s mindset.

@Bob I Love 902010 tooooo this season is great but the new timeslot is hurting the show! I Hope they give final season with 10 o 12 episodes

  • Brandy

IWith GG,EOMD,LA Complex,Cult,BatB,CD cancelled & 90210 short final season, CW ll have 4-5 spots for new shows.Beauty will move if renewed cause Originals will be after VD. I think Carrie Diaries will get a full season despite middling ratings because if it dosent CW will have two hours of repeats, which I don’t think they want.CW needs to a cheap filler or reality show for Fri @9.

  • david

Yes they retolled theh selection and picked it up to pilot as one of the posibilities.

  • JJA

IMHO, the best sounding pilots are probably “The Selection” and “The Tomorrow People.” The rest sound awful.

I remember watching re-runs of The Tomorrow People as a kid, but it was very much a heavy science fiction show. There were aliens, a galactic federation, an inter-galactic space station, robots, trips to alien worlds, as well as teenagers that were developing super-human abilities. It could actually be very good.

The Selection, if picked up, will almost certainly replace B&TB on Thursdays @ 9. Like VD, there is a love triangle at its core, and a real pretty young girl that has to chose between two guys (one being a prince). They all live together in a castle, which occasionally gets attacked by terrorists. AND, there are another 30 or so girls trying to claw their way to said prince. I can see this doing really well playing-off the VD.

  • CoolRanchDoritos

I’m sick of my CW shows ending.

Yes the show was better a few seasons ago, but i’m still watching it.

Don’t take another show from me.

  • C.S.Strowbridge

If they keep 90210 for a 13-episode season and cancel TCD or HoD instead, they are crazy.

  • Dave

Gossip Girl and 90210 shared a slot so that= 1 SLOT Mondays 9/8c

The LA Complex was a summer series along with The Next and The Catalina have also been canned but they’re summer series so I wouldn’t count them with the CW’s regular Season shows.

    Emily and CULT(in canned)= 1 slot Tuesdays 9/8c

    Carrie= 1 SLOT Mondays 8/7c

Beauty will likely move to Friday= 1 SLOT Thursdays 9/8c

So that’s four slots for four new shows.

  • Brandy

Jja,wrong.VDs spinoff The Originals will take b&TB slot.

  • Pal

Nikita is doing fine and dandy now :)

  • Dave

Since pilots have been announced, it should be:

    Hart of Dixie
    Blink or Company Town

    The Hundred

    The Tomorrow People

    The Originals

    The Selection

  • Dan

Anyone who think Hart of Dixie will go over Beauty and the Beast is crazy. The show is in its second season aka that much closer to syndication (after all, isn’t that what has kept dead weight Nikita alive?). Plus I’m sure it is cheaper to produce. I think Beauty and the Beast will likely go…if it doesn’t, it is going to Fridays. I love 90210, but I wouldn’t be upset if they wrapped things up this season. I could also see a short final season to premiere in summer 2014. Vampire Diaries, Arrow, Supernatural are all sure things for renewal (fan of Supernatural, but I think next season needs to be the final one as it is getting WAY too repetitive for me). Who knows what will happen to The Carrie Diaries, but I’m sure it will most likely be canceled. Cult needs to have decent numbers or else that will go as well.

  • Starship

I’d say 90210 shouldn’t be written off quite yet, final ratings are not in and even if it doesn’t adjust up, who’s to say more shows won’t drop to a 0.3 come May. Also, while the CW ordered 8 pilots, it’s guaranteed that not all of them will get to air. 6 of these pilots are genre/futuristic/alien/superpower shows, i.e. they will require bigger budgets than your cheap HoD or 90210. The other two pilots sound terrible, but I can still see one of them possibly making the cut, since I doubt the CW want to turn into SyFy over night. The safest bet to be picked up to series, I’d say would be The Selection, since they’ve been trying to make it happen since last year. Apart from that it’s way too early to tell and those absurd fan schedules are just ridiculous.

  • Tessa

Wednesdays are doing very well. Leave them alone.

Finally someone who gets this. I laugh at all those fantasy schedules who think it’s such a grand idea to split the Wednesday shows. What’s that saying? If it ain’t broken….

  • Hubert R. Wentland

Hart of Dixie will be renewed, since it brings not that bad ratings against The Voice. Beside, what CW show could do better in this slot? (I do not count The Vampire Diaries nor Arrow, since they’re staying in their slots for sure). but I also think this season will start the farawell to teendrama driven shows, and I can totally see 2014-2015 season without any of them.
