Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 27, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D. canceled 0.51
90210 :| :| :| 0.58
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.80
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.87
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.02
Supernatural      1.31
Arrow      1.60
Vampire Diaries      1.96

Fans of 90210 better hope that the CW's Mark Pedowitz is still handing out short final seasons for old shows, because that's the only way 90210 survives into next season. Its ratings are dreadful, even for the CW. Since reading Mr. Pedowitz's mind is the only way to know for sure, I'm keeping it as a "toss up".

Desperate fans may cite Pedowitz's public statements as cause for hoping for one thing, or another, but after doing this for more than five years, I'm 100% certain that trying to assign probabilities based on TV executive public statements is folly.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Nikita, Hart of Dixie and Arrow are all certain to be renewed :)
The CW will most likely air three new dramas in the fall meaning two out of four remaining dramas (90210, BATB, TCD, Cult) will have to receive renewals.

I’m hoping that The CW won’t renew 90210 and put this show out of it’s misery! Beauty is currently most likely safe for a renewal (depending on how well Cult does). Even Carrie Diaries could still have a chance.

Let’s hope it goes like this
    SPN – renewed
    90210 – cancelled
    TVD – renewed
    Nikita – renewed (final season)
    HOD – renewed
    Arrow – renewed
    BATB – renewed
TCD and Cult – one renewed, one cancelled

I think fantasy schedules are pointless here. This network is too unstable, there are only three shows we know for sure to schedule for next year, and they aren’t moving anywhere.

  • Dan

90210 will have horrible numbers but CW will still give it a short farewell season. After One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl got one, there’s no way CW wont give 90210 a final season as well.

Bubble dramas, Nikita and Hart of Dixie will return. Nikita Rising as well as syndication will save it for Fridays next season, which will be its last. Hart of Dixie also does OK leading the night so as a second year full season drama, it will be back.

The Carrie Diaries and Beauty and the Beast will most certainly be cancelled. As they are both first season series that are underperforming.

Arrow, Supernatural, and Vampire Diaries will most certainly be back.

  • Charmed

If Gossip Girl got a final season with terrible ratings, 90210 should too.

  • JJA

I’m not so sure 90210 will get a partial season. It may just be canceled.

OTH got a partial season because it was doing BETTER than GG and as well as Supernatural. The CW would have done a full season, but they couldn’t get the actors to stay on longer.

And GG’s final season 6 was a mistake. They probably hoped it would get some final season buzz, which simply did not happen. GG’s season 6 ratings were terrible.

Why would the CW make the same mistake with a partial season 6 for 90210? Especially given that GG was doing BETTER last year at this time than 90210 is doing now.

So we shouldn’t assume 90210 will automatically get a partial season 6.

  • Rachel

We already know the Originals will air after TVD next season. The Selection will probably be picked up as well since the CW was so deadset on reviving it.

I think TCD is a goner. Possibly Cult too if it flops. I think it’ll be between Cult and B&tB over who gets the dreaded Friday post Nikita slot next season.

90210 should be cancelled but since it’s been on so long the flop President may give it a pity 10 episodes.

    Everything else is safe.

90210 is one of my favorite shows on the cw network
No Way to a 90210 Cancelation
No Way to a 90210 Series Finale
No Way to a 90210 Short season if there has to be a short season please do a back Order

  • halloween

@Charmed 90210 is having its final season right now

  • Melody

I’m not going to guess on the schedule next year, but I do know what I personally want to see return. So here is my hope for the renewal/cancelations as opposed to my educated guesses based ratings:

    The Carrie Diaries
The Vampire Diaries – I loved this show once but this season just sucks, either kill Elena or cancel the show

Supernatural – for two seasons YAY!!! Jensen and Jared have many more monsters to kill
    Beauty and the Beast
Cult – I know we haven’t seen this yet but I’m a big fan of Robert Knepper and Matt Dallas so I have high hopes
Hart of Dixie – because the world deserves to see Wilson Bethel’s smile
Arrow – because the world should not be denied Stephen Amell’s abs
Nikita – for a final season, I need to see how it ends

  • Lmw931

I totally agree with Dave when they all left for college it killed the show. Not many shows do the high school to college transition successfully. When it all comes down to it 90210 is a high school drama and without the school it’s nothing. They’re suppose to be at college, but when are they actually there ? They are lucky to have got to season 5.

  • Lmw931

    and Melody
CW won’t cancel The Vampire Diaries because it’s the best rated show on the cw and ANTM has already been renewed.

  • BL

You’re kidding that BATB will be renewed over TVD? This has to be some practical joke. If any show needs to go, its 90210.

  • Gabs

Why are there so many people with comprehension issues?

Melody said those were the shows she would have liked to see canceled and renewed based on her personal taste, not ratings.

  • Mike

I’m positive this is what will be canceled come may…

    Emily Owens MD
90210 (may even get a super short final season saved for midseason of 6-12 episodes)
    Carrie Diaries
Cult (I’m only mentioning this one because all the bad reviews
    Gossip Girl

So they’ll need a lot of slots to fill though they may give Carrie diaries a chance but I doubt it

  • erin

    Halloween Melody
90210 is one of my favorite shows on the cw network
90210 has to be renwed for a full season 6
I gonna be upset if 90210 gets canceled

  • Angellica .T.

    renew the secret circle

  • John A

CW has to cancel 90210. Its getting pathetic numbers. I like Rob idea that Spn on Monday but id put The Originals on Monday leading into it.

  • Illinois

Hart of Dixie is certain to be Renewed !
The Show will have 44 episodes at the End of the Season. The CW certainly wants to have it on Syndication. There is only 3 years before The CW stop ? If so HoD is the last Show which can get a syndication deal !

  • Sonicphoto

Wohooo Nikita rises!!!! 90210 is doing awful, the lack of Gossip Girl seems to have killed the show once and for all. Beauty and the beast will certainly be renewed considering it does better than carrie. I think supernatural should be paired with Cult. I just don’t see how 90210 will get its short season unless they do it in the summer, I guess.

  • Marc

Am I the only person who wants 90210 to get renewed? Its a really good show…of course the ratings are going down they put it after TCD? Its the worst show ever its boring so of course nobody is going to watch 90210…Of course Nikita has better ratings its on Friday! And people are not into teen drama anymore so thats why its flopping…So i want 90210 to have a Final 13 Episodes!! They deserve it
