Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 27, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D. canceled 0.51
90210 :| :| :| 0.58
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.80
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.87
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.02
Supernatural      1.31
Arrow      1.60
Vampire Diaries      1.96

Fans of 90210 better hope that the CW's Mark Pedowitz is still handing out short final seasons for old shows, because that's the only way 90210 survives into next season. Its ratings are dreadful, even for the CW. Since reading Mr. Pedowitz's mind is the only way to know for sure, I'm keeping it as a "toss up".

Desperate fans may cite Pedowitz's public statements as cause for hoping for one thing, or another, but after doing this for more than five years, I'm 100% certain that trying to assign probabilities based on TV executive public statements is folly.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think The CW should finally get rid of 90210. There’s no need for a season 6. They should give producers an early notice though to wrap up production.

  • Nick

What the CW should do for 2013-2014:

8: America’s Next Top Model/ The Selection (new)
    9: Hart of Dixie

    8: The Hundred (new)
    9: Supernatural

    8: Arrow
    9: Amazon (new)

    8: The Vampire Diaries
    9: The Originals (new)

    8: Nikita (full final season)
    9: Beauty and the Beast

  • Dan

I agree with Dave and hello. Shows like 90210 and TCD are obsolete and have no audience anymore. They need to go.

Beauty and the BEast could work pretty well if paired with Nikita. I heard it is cheap to produce and sold very well internationally (which means there is also a DVD market). If they don’t move it to Fridays then I fear it will be cancelled.

Hart of Dixie will be renewed. It’s cheap and either Company Town or Blink (one will be picked up) will be paired with it.

Of all the pilots think they will also pick up the reworked the Selection, Oxygen and The Tomorrow People. I like the idea of The Hundred and Reign but they sound a bit too ambitious for The CW (meaning too expensive).

The Originals, of course if picked up, will be paired with TVD.

Cult won’t be a huge hit so I can see them renewing it for a 13 episode midseason replacement.

I think Mark said they will order 8 or 9 pilots this season and so far, they have only ordered 7 (Blink, Company Town, The Hundred, The Selection, The Originals, Reign, Oxygen).

    Cancelled-90210, TCD

    8-New Drama
    9-Hart Of Dixie

    8-New Drama

    9-New Drama

    8-The Vampire Diaries
    9-New Drama

    8-Beauty and the Beast

with 1 New Drama picked up for mid season and possibly either Cult/Carrie/90210 (1 of the 3)

  • DougF

Amazon has been pushed back for the 2014 pilot season. So if it were to get picked up it wouldn’t be until the 2014-2015 season

  • Dan

    @ Nick

They actually passed on Amazon for this year. According to Pedowitz it just wasn’t ready and similar to The Selection it might be ready for next year. Apparently they are still waiting for a new draft and casting for Diane is underway. Anyway, it is a no-go for this year.

Also, I just read somewhere that The CW’s pilot order is done for this year. Don’t know if that is true because I thought I also read that they wanted to order 8-9 pilots this year.

  • Z

Obviously TVD, SPN, and Arrow are going to be renewed.
Almost certain for Nikita and HoD.
The big if’s are BatB and 90210. Either or these will get renewed and should be moved to Friday, well 90210 will get like a 13 episode order for the Fall while Beauty and the Beast would be getting a full season order.
    TCD leaning more towards cancelation.
It really depends on how much new shows CW has ordered.

  • lois

Right nikita get renewed. Do not care about hod at all.

  • Amanda

@Richard Steven Hack you haven’t been watching the series… because Vincent does become a Beast and he has ZERO control over it and when he’s a beast he doesn’t look like a human with just a scar… he scary looking!

Also in the original myth, the Beast becomes humans at the end.

In this one, the human is becoming the Beast as time progresses.

  • Honey Badger

Hart Of Dixie on CW .5 and above 18-49 rating going against one of the highest rated shows on television a new NCIS on CBS 3.8 18-49 rating. Also Hart Of Dixie goes against it and “ The Voice “ and still holds very good ratings for CW. CW could not find a replacement to do as well.

@ hello, You are right, CW The Carrie Diaries should be cancelled immediately, this show is DOA, and next week it will go against a new CBS How I Met Your Mother , and not a repeat like it did last night. Expect The Carrie Diaries ratings to keep dropping and CW to cancel it.

90210 and Carrie Diaries are serving an audience that doesn’t exist anymore. They must end them both, the sooner the better. Renew everything else

  • Nick

    @DougF and Dan

Thanks, I did not know that. I’ll change it next week.

  • cancel 90210

    cancel 90210

Amanda: “you haven’t been watching the series”

    I’ve watched every episode.

“because Vincent does become a Beast”

NOT permanently like the original, which is entirely my point.

“and he has ZERO control over it”

No, he doesn’t. If he isn’t upset or threatened, he has excellent control over it otherwise he and his associate wouldn’t go out at all. He had some issues in one or two episodes but that appears to have been cleared up. He’s no longer blacking out. So YOU aren’t watching the episodes.

“and when he’s a beast he doesn’t look like a human with just a scar… he scary looking!”

Again, not permanently. He also tends to revert back very quickly – too quickly in my view in some episodes.

“Also in the original myth, the Beast becomes humans at the end.”

At the END… That doesn’t help if you want to go four seasons… :-)

“In this one, the human is becoming the Beast as time progresses.”

Which again, without the conspiracy being a threat, would not be a problem. He could get medical help. The CONSPIRACY is the ONLY thing keeping them apart – and the writers have minimized it for quite a few episodes. That makes the show make no sense.

And again, the rest of the premise of the show – the procedural crime stories and the family issues – are all just filler which drag out the episodes to no good end.

The show is just bad and really should not get a second season.

This is what I think the cw should do:

    The Tomorrow People
    The Hundred

    The Selection
    Hart of Dixie

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Original

    Beauty and the Beast

  • Mike

90210 is done…the only reason we got a final season of GG was out of respect for the show which was once the signature series on The CW… 90210 never had the buzz or success that GG did its first few seasons, and its ratings are pathetic. Bye bye Beverly Hills…

  • James

    Hart of Dixie
    90210/The Carrie Diaries

    The Hundred

    Tomorrow People

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals

    Beauty & The Beast

    Company Town

I think the CW will keep one teen girl/ up beat night, jjust for clicks and giggles. (MONDAY)

  • Eric_Philly

    Come on… Cult… also, Nikita’s not last? That’s hilarious!

  • jel

I am calling 90210 as done in May. Why not invest in shows with a future if you are trying to salvage a network? BATB, HOD, CD, another new show . . . even EO if it wasn’t already dead would be a better use of the 10-13 hours that could be allotted to 90210 fall 2013. Even the dead EO has gotten steady .4’s . . . the same as 90210 lately and theoretically could grow. Ditto BATB, HOD and CD. Not that I expect them too, but 90210 has been on for 4 years with ratings slowly drifting in the wrong direction. GG spiked for the finale, but was pulling .3s and .4’s most of the fall. It’s not to late to hype this as the final season of 90210, and get that finale spike for whatever it’s worth.

  • Patrick G.

I have been a fan of 90210 since it started, but I am also tired of it now. The new characters introduced that hold promise are quickly shuffled away, probably due to cost, but the writers and producers are running out of plots for the core 8 now. Just wrap it all up this year and put it to bed, please!!

  • Dave

    @Patrick G.

100% agreed! I just need closure, no season 6.
