Fans of 90210 better hope that the CW's Mark Pedowitz is still handing out short final seasons for old shows, because that's the only way 90210 survives into next season. Its ratings are dreadful, even for the CW. Since reading Mr. Pedowitz's mind is the only way to know for sure, I'm keeping it as a "toss up".

Desperate fans may cite Pedowitz's public statements as cause for hoping for one thing, or another, but after doing this for more than five years, I'm 100% certain that trying to assign probabilities based on TV executive public statements is folly.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Lmw931 and @BL – I specifically stated that I wished to see TVD canceled and B&tB picked up, this is my desire not my guesses at the ratings. Bill does such a good job at showing us what we are all facing at the end of the season why should I bother to reiterate what he’s already stated. I chose to focus on my wants not my educated guesses.

@Gabs – Thanks for actually reading what I stated instead of jumping to conclusions. I’m grateful.

    CW pecking order:

    0.4: Emily Owens MD, 90210
    0.4-0.5: Nikita
    0.5: Carrie Diaries
    0.5-0.6: Hart of Dixie

    0.6-0.7: Beauty and the Beast

And there’s still four whole months to go.

Emily Owens is averaging a 0.4, on par with 90210, Nikita, and only a hair below Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast — i. e. veterans and the network’s best lead-in.

For a freshman to virtually keep its premiere rating throughout the 13 episodes is quite a feat, and since 9-0 and Nikita are reaching the end of their respective runs, Owens could’ve become the netlet’s next Hart of Dixie

The show is absolutely crap… It used to be good and used to be a shadow of the original 90210, but now is not even that! Now they just have annoying characters (most of them that is) EXTREMELY shallow and fake storylines. Very unoriginal and very poorly made! The show unfortunately deserves to get cancelled. I only blame CW for its demise. It ruins everything. Thank God it still has a few decent shows (TVD, Supernatural and Arrow) that it can still be called a network. Thank you.

  • Alan

I can’t see 90210 getting cancelled even if it wasn’t as big as GG. BaTB fans are delusional. The CW is looking for a show that can hold TVD’s audience, and Beauty and The Beast isn’t doing that. It’s getting cancelled and it will be replaced by The Originals.
Cult is already dead, they gave them the worst timeslot.

  • Angellica .T.

please do more secret circle pretty please

  • Dave

    @Alan

The only reason I think Beauty will survive is because The CW has Fridays at 9p open. I can’t see them leaving it that way next season and something has to got there.

Nikita didn’t do all that bad during Season 1 but was moved to Friday IMO because something had to fill the void left by Smallville at 8p.

  • Dave

But hey, I could be wrong but usually(at least for The CW), things are very easy to predict during this time and I see Beauty being renewed AND shipped to Fridays.

CULT,if renewed will most likely be another filler.

Carrie and 90210 seem dead to me.

@ Dave B&B has generally been a 0.6 rated show. How is putting it up against Grimm going to fix that? If anything, the ratings will go down. It looks like a bunch of contributors to this thread were impressed with the fact that B&B returned from hiatus with a 0.7. However, its questionable if its relatively modest viewership will be sufficient to generate a higher demo. I expect its demo to drop tomorrow because, unlike last week, POI is coming back with a new episode. I don’t claim to be impartial about B&B. However, it’s becoming clear that the CW can’t leave it on at 9 PM Thursday because of it’s low ratings and the likelihood that the Originals will air at that time. So, with Wednesdays also taken up, it doesn’t look like there’s anyplace for B&B to go unless the CW unexpectedly runs short on pilots and returning shows for Mondays and Tuesdays. I don’t see that happening, so I expect that B&B will probably be cancelled.

  • Splum

Love B&B and if there’s a small chance it will be renewed, I’ll take it!

  • Deeann

Keep BATB but get rid of the awful Alex character NOW.

    A possible CW 2013-2014 schedule could be…

    Mon:
    *Company Town*
    Hart of Dixie

    Tue:
    *The Selection*
    *Oxygen*

    Wed:
    Arrow
    Supernatural

    Thur:
    The Vampire Diaries
    *The Originals*

    Fri:
    Nikita
    Beauty and the Beast

    Mid-Season:
    Cult

  • Lainey

    @TV-1

I agree about BATB! If they bring it back, I actually think it would be a good Friday night show! I also like the thought of HOD on Mondays following a show like Company Town. I hope that pilot does well- it sounds like a great premise. Good job on the “dream schedule” for next season!

  • Zach

Why is Hart of Dixie always lumped as a ‘teen girl’ show? All of the actors are like thirty years old and they are actually playing their age not like 90210. If anything The Vampire Diaries is a teen girl show more so than HOD because its actually about teens. But everyone on this site seems to hate CW shows that aren’t genre and lump them all together.

  • Melanie P.

I used to watch 90210 all of the time(as well as the original) but haven’t really seen it much this season. I just read the recaps on the CW website from time to time. When it is time to cancel it, I do want it to have the proper ending.

  • Brandy

@Zach I agree on both things you said.I thought Pedowitz did agood job this season balancing the genre shows and the teen shows/girly shows.I think Pedowitz made a bad descion to go all genre next season because theres already scifi network, and a lot of its shows get below 1.0,Fringe and Chuck werent big rayings hit, and networks need variety, and SPN wont last more than a couple seasons at most and based online chatter, I forsee a biv VD decline in ratings soon.I think Pedowitz will run in to the same problem with all genre all the time as he ran into with the teen/girly shows:theyll get good ratings ratings for say 3 seasons then crash hard due to oversaturation and certain trends dying out(,,VD is big p artly cause of Twilight, Arrow is big partly cause of Avengers, ect.)I think people will tire of genre shows or at least all genre all the time.I think its ironic that people blame Dawn for teen/girly show all the time lineup, yet they want Pedowitz to do a vrry similar thing. They forget that thst for two years or more VD, GG and 90210 were the networks big hits and for the first three seasons did get good ratings before the bottom fell out.I hate all the teen/girly show bashing ,mainly because those certain people bashing just dont like genre.Im not a SCYFY fan so I dont that network, im not a cop show fan either, so I dont watch cbs .

  • omabin

I think the cw would be better of repeating beauty and the beast on fridays instead of the carrie diaries. It has a higher chance of being renewed than carrie at this point and there is some likelihood that it moves to fridays if it does, so why not schedule repeats in the timeslot already

    @Mike
On the contrary, I’ll be totally unsurprised if 90210 gets a final shortened season for exactly the same reasons Gossip Girl did: It’s the last season of the cast’s contract and they want to make a few more episodes for Netflix and syndication, but the ratings don’t justify the cost of a full season.

Gossip Girl wasn’t given a short final season out of any respect for it. The CW is a business not a charitable institution.
