Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- January 27, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show   0.63
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.76
Raising Hope      0.84
New Girl      1.02
Bones renewed 1.09
American Dad renewed 1.24
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.24
Glee      1.31
The Simpsons renewed 1.49
The Following :) :) :) :) 1.61
Family Guy renewed 1.63

A combination of low ratings, and a seeming lack of time to produce new episodes in time for next season has me downgrading The Cleveland Show to "likely to be canceled". Could it still get an order for episodes to air in early 2014? I guess. But that's no longer even a toss up opportunity.

The Following premiered well, and its ratings rose in its second episode. That's not going to put food in the stomach of the cancellation bear.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

To soon for The Following to be certain?

To soon for The Following to be certain?”

More like, I was focused on TCS and this was completely written before last night’s Following results were in. Given nothing else but Mindy & The Following to talk about, that’s likely the headline next week.

  • David Howell

Hard to argue with likely cancellation for Cleveland Show on those January numbers. If anything I’d put it at certain.

  • Dave

    Makes sense then :)

  • hello

The death of Cleveland Show comes three years too late. Hope you are right

  • JohnnyRico

I think this is actually harder to predict because of how many shows McFarlene does for FOX they are pretty much reliant on him for their Sundays now. If he says give me 8-12 more episodes to close out the Cleveland Show I can’t see Fox really telling him no.

  • joel

Does FOX have another animated sitcom in development? I guess I could live with Bob’s Burgers moving to 7:30 for a while.

  • DW

yeah Cleveland is gone for sure. i still feel that raising hope is gone too. its rating have dropped by half since last season and its doing good wife numbers.

  • Illinois

    What FOX should do

    8:00 – Bones
    9:00 – The Following

    8:00 – Raising Hope
    8:30 – NEW COMEDY
    9:00 – New Girl
    9:30 – The Mindy Project

    8:00 – The X-Factor / American Idol

    8:00 – The X-Factor / American Idol
    9:00 – NEW DRAMA

    8:00 – Kitchen Nightmares / Touch
    9:00 – Glee (Final 2 Seasons)

    8:00 – The Simpsons
    8:30 – Bob’s Burgers
    9:00 – Family Guy
    9:30 – American Dad !

  • Jonay

Why doesn’t Fox give up on comedies they don’t work for them unless your new girl?

  • Dan

@Illinois – If The Following gets renewed it will probably be for midseason of 15 eps, due to Kevin Bacons schedule

  • Dan

Also its likely too late for Cleveland to get a short order and Fox already has a comedy for midseason, which means even if renewed, Cleveland would likely air at 7:00. Its ratings are horrible, its already scheduled for syndication, and all ordered eps are scheduled to air through May.

  • Wright

Still sad over Fringe.I only watch Bones and New Girl on this network now.

  • Maximillian

Why not move AI to Tues/Wed and do comedies on Thursday? It seems that Tuesday is a terrible place to launch a new comedy, let alone continue the terrible comedy showdown between ABC, NBC and FOX.

  • Justin

Fox should keep The Cleveland Show. They can make big bucks selling episodes into syndication on CN’s Adult Swim, TBS, and Netflix.

  • David

Well Glee, New Girl and The Following I’m guessing are gonna be back. Cleveland is gonna be cancelled which means the only bubble show on the whole network is The Mindy Project. I’m think it’ll be renewed.

  • João

Well i guess The Following is certain to be renewed…

  • JJJj

You guys have a horrible record with the animated shows. Havent you put American Dad and Bobs as certain to be cancelled many a time?

Those shows simply have a different revenue model.

  • Dan

The Following will be certain likely after next week only because once CBS is new well see how The Following does against that. I believe Fox will renew The Following and The Mindy Project.

  • Joe

FOX is in a weird place for comedy next year. Their large amount of comedy pilots suggest they’re still actively pursuing it, but how are they going to do it? They can’t just revert back to the same line-up they had this year (only with a different show at 8:30), that wouldn’t work.

Their problem is they don’t have any comedies that can launch a block. Raising Hope and New Girl can do decently/okay on their own, but they’re not strong enough to hold up anything else.
