A combination of low ratings, and a seeming lack of time to produce new episodes in time for next season has me downgrading The Cleveland Show to "likely to be canceled". Could it still get an order for episodes to air in early 2014? I guess. But that's no longer even a toss up opportunity.

The Following premiered well, and its ratings rose in its second episode. That's not going to put food in the stomach of the Cancellation Bear.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

FOX needs more drama time next year honestly. However, since they keep ordering comedy pilots and that RH and New Girl are locks to come back, I think they will need to be creative. I would go with this:

    Monday
    Bones
    New Drama/The Following

    Tuesday
    Glee
    New Drama

    Wednesday
    The X-Factor
    New Comedy

    Thursday
    The X-Factor
    New Girl
    New Comedy

    Friday
    Kitchen Nightmares
    Raising Hope
    Raising Hope

Have Raising Hope start late in the season (use that space to repeat the new dramas until then) so that they have enough time to produce episodes to double it up during fall. It will be renewed for sydication only anyway, and I have no idea what else they could put on fridays. They would still be able to premiere two new comedies like this, as well as two new dramas.

It seems like Fox is serving up double Cleveland episodes come March 10th and March 17th – burn-off?

  • Sel

I remember a year and a half ago when “I Hate my Teenage Daughter” was pulling 2.1 – 2.5 and FOX was too cool for it. And now they are super-duper proud of their New Girl witch is on the same level and they’re about to renew the most unfunny and unwatchable “comedy” – The Flopsy Project. It’s not gonna surprise me if that “comedy” bangs 88 episodes.

9:00 The Following / (New Drama)

    Wed

    Thu
    8:00 The X-Factor / American Idol
    9:00 Raising Hope

    Sun

    7:30 American Dad
    8:00 The Simpsons (Farewell Season)
    8:30 Bob’s Burgers
    9:00 Family Guy
    9:30 (New Animated Comedy)

FOX has a fairly simple lineup compared to ABC, CBS and NBC. But more complicated at the same time, because of limited time slots.
X Factor and Idol take up nearly every slot on Wed and Thurs. They will probably launch a new drama or 2 new sitcoms after one of those days.
    Sunday is reserved for Animation.
That leaves Mon and Tues (just 2 hours each) for scripted shows. Obviously The Following and Bones takes up 2 hours. Only 2 Hours left for a new drama or sitcoms. The New Girl is fairly strong and Raising Hope is fading. They need a HIT sitcom.
Friday will most likely consist of low budget reality shows.

i hope the Mindy Project gets renewed, that show is so unique and funny, it honestly make me smile

  • James

About time, you don’t need for clone of the same show on the same channel.

  • frank

Fox tick off Seth McFarlane by not letting the Cleveland show grind out to 100 episodes before pulling the plug? They sell some more DVDs and they have a healthy package to keep it doing fine on various Fox related channels for the next decade while Family Guy keeps going.

I Hate My Teenage Daughter ratings

    After The X Factor – 2.8, 2.1, 1.8, 2.0

    Tuesday comedy block – 1.6, 1.4, 1.2

    Your memory sucks.

Necessity. The Cleveland Show is preempted a lot during the fall, so it has only aired 8 episodes compared to ~11 for the other Animation Domination shows.

  • Sel

    @Ultima
Putting a show on a 3 months hiatus after 4 aired episodes and after that putting it on a different night its called sabotage. I was working on the set as an assistant and things were said!

Most would call it a second chance. The ratings were bad enough after the first four episodes that it should have been pulled and canceled earlier.

The general concensus is that the two-hour comedy block was a terrible idea for FOX last season and they should have stuck with the Glee/New Girl/Raising Hope lineup all year.

  • brandon

so does this mean Cleveland will be back on Family Guy

  • Brad

That show has always been terrible and boardline racist.

  • DearFox

    Dear Fox,

    Three words: Beavis and Butt-Head.

    Thanks.

  • wqeqwew

Good, after that they can cancel Family Guy, American Idol and The X-Factor.

  • Sam

Why cancel The Cleveland Show? If you ask me they never really put enough effort into that show. I feel like Seth supported it the least and Fox just doesn’t like it. Like MOST people. I think the show has potential. I say put it on hiatus and bring in some new writers and better story development. And can we please get TCS some better support from FOX and Seth MacFarlane. Then give it another chance. Maybe then peiople will start to like it more so. I mean if your gonna cancel TCS you might as well can American Dad. That shows no winner either!!!!!

  • Brad

Not surprised about the near certain canceling of The Cleavland Show.. I always thought from the start it would be canceled soon. Quagmire is always the best option to go with, in my opinion.
