Although its not in the calculations above, Deception hit its second 1.3 adults 18-49 rating last night against repeat broadcast competition. I had moved it to "likely to be canceled" last week, but now it gets in the headline!

With their uneven scheduling, and universally terrible ratings, I'm still not quite sure what to make of the chances for most NBC sitcoms. I'm hoping future week's ratings provide more clarity, but I won't be surprised if its more of the same.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I peacock peacock.

Comedy wise, NBC is such a mess. I assume Parks & Go On will get renewed and thrown to the dogs Thursday at 8, while NBC tries to launch new comedies Tuesday at 9 and Thursday at 9. Maybe the Cee Lo Green comedy on Tuesday and Michael J Fox comedy on Thursday.

  • hello

NBC-logic, let poorly rated shows stay on the air and take of their two most popular shows for 4 months

  • Jonay

Why can’t they just move guys with kids and 1600 penn to Fridays it seems smart?

  • Nick

How come The New Normal is a tossup while 1600 Penn is likely to be cancelled & has a higher average for the spring ratings

  • Joe

I really wish they’d try this show on an earlier timeslot, 10PM shows notoriously get less viewers, this show is very compelling and smart, so yeah it’s definitely at a disadvantage there since most people watch absolute garbage nowadays. Sigh. I think it would of done much better on a cable network like FX.

  • William

I dont watch anything on NBC expect the Voice and even that went down hill when they voted off all the best singers.

  • BL

This is how NBC should do their schedule:
Sundays are fine the way they are.

    Mondays
8:00 The Biggest Loser (until Mar 18)/The Voice
10:00 Revolution (re-runs until Mar 18, NBC needs to put re-runs for fans to watch in order for it to avoid the hiatus curse like The Event and FlashForward did instead of airing annoying Deception which has delievered poor ratings)/Revolution (new episodes start March 25)

    Tuesdays
    8:00 Betty White/The Voice
9:00 Chicago Fire (If this airs after The Voice instead of those 2 comedies, it will get better exposure)
    10:00 Smash

    Wednesdays
    8:00 Whitney
    8:30 Guys with Kids
9:00 The New Normal (I think this will be a perfect show after Guys with Kids as it deals with families too. It doesn’t need to air against 2 comedies)
9:30 1600 Penn (It hasn’t done well after The Office and I think it would do better on Wednesdays)
    10:00 Fashion Star

    Thursdays:
    8:00 Community
    8:30 Parks and Recreation
    9:00 The Office
9:30 Go On (This has potential to do well. Why does NBC want it on Tuesdays when it faces 2 comedies?)
    10:00 Do No Harm

    Fridays:
8:00 Law and Order SVU (Though it does help Chicago Fire, I believe it can also help Grimm instead of putting Fashion Star before it)
9:00 Grimm (new episodes start March 8)
10:00 Rock Center with Brian Williams

    Saturdays:
    9:00 Smash (re-run)
8:00 Law and Order: SVU (re-run)
    10:00 Chicago Fire (re-run)

Deception will likely be pulled. I hope Up All Night will be dumped on Saturdays at 8:30 and will most definitely be gone. It has no business airing on Thursdays. This is how I think Saturday schedule should be when Up All Night burns off all of its episodes.
    April 13-May 11
    8:00 Parks and Recreation (re-run)
    8:30 Up All Night
    9:00 Smash (re-run)
    10:00 Chicago Fire (re-run)

  • Justin

The more NBC shows that come on the air and BOMB, give Whitney a better chance of returning next year….I’m looking at you Do No Harm…aka Awake…aka My Own Worst Enemy.

  • Josh

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I love Deception!!!!!! its my new fav show :(

  • Wright

I only care about Grimm and Revolution. I can’t wait for them to return.

  • DanaK

Not that it matters much given that Deception has maybe 3-4 episodes left before being replaced by Revolution.

  • Honey Badger

My has NBC fallen, only a few of their shows would not be cancelled if they were at CBS.

What would you do to fix NBC?

  • Paul

I bet TNN will be renewed. Along with Go On, it’s the only new comedy that has received good critics. It won PCA. It deals with an issue that, if cancelled, will be used against NBC. And ultimately, it’s Ryan Murphy. He is completely decided to make it last long and if NBC dumps it, there are many chances that it would end up in another network (FOX?). Before witnessing that, I bet NBC is gonna keep it for a second season and see what happens then.

  • tjw

    @BL –

There is no “hiatus curse,” only a “terrible shows with cratering ratings that continue to crater after hiatus curse.”

  • Anthony

I really wish they’d try this show on an earlier timeslot, 10PM shows notoriously get less viewers, this show is very compelling and smart, so yeah it’s definitely at a disadvantage there since most people watch absolute garbage nowadays. Sigh. I think it would of done much better on a cable network like FX.

I’m assuming you’re talking about Deception here. While yes it is true that 9pm generally rate higher than 10pm shows, not so drastically that Deception should expect massive ratings improvement simply by moving up an hour. And how do you figure it would better on FX than NBC? Firstly, FX airs all of their dramas at 10pm (which you were just lamenting that you want it aired earlier!) Secondly Currently Deception has a lead in of 2.4/2.3 every Monday, on FX it would probably be looking at a sub 1.0 lead in, how would that help it do better?

  • Tania

I love deception! I hope they dont cancel it! Im so tired on networks not ginving shows a fighting chance! example 666 park avenue!!!!!!

  • CoolRanchDoritos

    NOOOO

I wanna know who killed Vivian.

This should really be on a different time, day & CHANNEL.

I’m gonna be highly upset if they end it & not show all 11 episodes.

    This sucks.

  • Dude

I just hope they’ll air all the episodes. Maybe that’s a longshot but it’s pretty crappy to start a mystery and not air the conclusion.

  • HT

Poorly written with dreadful acting. The main character is pretty good, but the cop boyfriend is terrible. Turned off after 2 1/2 episodes – it was just getting too bad to watch.
